    In my comments I keep hearing about the denon prime 4 and why it's going to change the way we DJ. Here are some reasons that might not be the answer.

    Prime 4 absolutely changed my workflow as a DJ. Standalone/streaming is the way of the future imo.
    However, I'm also a house DJ. You mentioned you use a lot of cross fader, jog wheel, etc. I rarely touch any of that when I perform. I use a lot of EQ's/filters/tempo. I don't use the crossfader at all, and i only use the jogwheels to nudge. I don't scratch unless I'm specifically playing hip hop. Anyway, great video! Was nice to see another perspective.

    This dude has totally missed the point of the prime 4. If pioneer released a similar bit of kit it would cost around 4k easy. You are getting serious bang for your buck with a prime 4

      Dope I didn’t say cost wasn’t important, I said my review wasn’t about cost. I also didn’t say it wasn’t a good controller, it is, but let’s be clear, it’s not cheap.

    • @funkmachine1984
      @funkmachine1984 Před 5 lety +4

      Cleveland Terry Bowens it’s not cheap, but it is relatively cheap. For the money, nothing else even comes close to this. In terms of all the bells and whistles dj gear, it’s a fucking bargain! I can’t wait to get mine and il probably pickup a ddj400 to keep with a laptop in a bag in case the shit hits the fan.

This is just version number one of the prime 4, it will get better and Better with time....huge respect to denon for pushing boundaries.

    Hi Terry, great video . I think that the point that you're arguing against here is applicable to practically any performance solution that doesn't have any measure of redundancy - not just against the Prime 4. I'm personally a fanboy: have two Denon SC5000 players with a Reloop Serato DVS mixer, and I use them to control Serato at mobile gigs (my current setup preference). If for whatever reason my laptop crashed , I could fall back on the players to keep doing the job. However, until late last year I was always using a controller with a laptop running Serato on their own, without a true backup to the performing software. Most DJs I know use a hardware/software solution, be it a controller + laptop, media players or standalone units (like the Pioneer XDJ). Hell, some still use CDs (which I find baffling), but even that uses a hardware/software interface. What Denon did with the SC5000 players in 2017 is push the software experience beyond what anyone had done before in standalone players. The Prime 4 is just that software in a package that rivals the XDJ RX2 - that's it. It doesn't solve the problem of the requirements for redundancy solutions. Hopefully Denon's moves these past couple of years set a new standard for standalone software/hardware products that keep the competition fresh and interesting.

    For the past four years I’ve dj with the Numark Quad Controller that has two cd turntables built in and to be honest I hardly ever use the laptop because I can bring up all my songs even the ones on the laptop in the small onboard dual screens. So in conclusion, digital dj ing has by for changed the way we dj today.

  • @mfdjgroup8813
    @mfdjgroup8813 Před 5 lety +8

    Yes that is a computer built in, but this computer carries the Denon DJ name. That means when something goes wrong there is no one else to blame. No incompatible updates between operating system and software, etc. When I first started DJing, I started with Traktor and I had so many issues that I think I developed heart condition as a result from the stress of trying to figure out what was wrong. Traktor kept blaming my laptop, but I eventually switched to Serato and problem solved. Although Serato has been amazing it hasn't been flawless. I don't expect the Prime 4 to be perfect, but at least the software and operating system will be stream lined and if there is a problem, only one place to turn to get it fixed!

      M&F DJ Group which will be great if Denon actually fixes shit and releases updates. I’ve bought too much technology, even pricier stuff. Where the support drops off to non-existent way before the product’s even at a polished state.
      Imho people should wait 3 months before buying to see how the initial support is. This is essentially a beta product, and a pretty damn expensive one at that.

    I just bought it today. We'll see how it goes. I've been searching for the pros and cons for this hardware. And I appreciate your feedback. Reason why I bought it is because the pros outweighed the cons. How versatile and compatible the machine is is pretty awesome. And the fact that it allows more room for improvement won my confidence. Im not saying others dont have similar features but I like the idea Dj world evolving and taking another step towards the future.

    Only thing you don't need a computer for is records, turntables and an analog mixer. Cdjs/media players have computers in them. Lots of mixers even have computers in them, even if they're just weak microprocessors. I'm not saying vinyl is the only real way to dj, just that's the only way to not use a computer of some sort.

  • @patrickbutlerentertainment5020

    I’m wondering if Denon will create a performance version of their software that will work with this controller? As a mobile performer and an open-format club DJ I can’t DJ without a laptop. Organizing my music for all of the events I do would be a huge mess and time consuming. But I really do appreciate Denon pushing new technology even though this controller wasn’t a home run for me.
    My “Dream” controller would be a Pioneer DDJ-1000 that runs on Serato with two thumb drive inputs and a zone output as well as the booth output. I’d pay $3000 for it!

For me simplicity is key, two things I've learned over the thirty years I've been a DJ , 1 your audience doesn't care about the labels, the bells and whistles on your equipment. 2 it's always about the music . When you buy your equipment buy smart not necessarily expensive . Sometimes I think DJ's particularly the younger ones get caught up with the bells and whistles . Good common sense video !

    Okay so that was a great video. I purchased the Prime 4 and it just arrived three days ago. I noticed some features that have been missing from previous Denon models and even Pioneer. The lack of sampler buttons really got to me a little bit. I do like some of the other that has been installed after you've made this video so the low time have improved and it has some great features. For me being used to Serato, and being a video DJ, this is not going to be the unit for me. I'm going to mess around with it for the next few days but it's probably going to return back and end up purchasing another reputable controller.

    Answering a few other things you mentioned (I'm an Owner, so I use this controller a lot):
    * If you don't like the touch interface, you can attach a keyboard via USB, or browse using the encoder.
    & Lastly, once analyzed, the track load time is the exact same as it is for Serato, Rekordbox, etc.
    * You can also stream music via WiFi using: beat port, soundcloud, Tidal, etc. So you rarely need to import new music. When I do, I just plug in a USB drive. But again, I'm a house DJ. So, I prepare my sets.

    You pretty much nailed it...the main thing that sticks out at me is that as a professional DJ I have a backup for pretty much everything, backup mixer, backup laptop, backup speakers..so when I see the Prime, its trying to do so many things at once, its a single point of failure..and technically speaking, when you make a piece of equipment do so many things, (be the mixer, computer, etc.) its not as efficient. I'd rather have my laptop and be able to control how fast it is and what IT does...and have my controller so that its responsible for IT does.. Also that tiny screen kind of sucks...

    Mr Terry. I have commented before, you were sensitive at first, but it was simple criticism. No one is exempt.
    This review, I enjoyed. A few misleading facts, like “you need a computer”, you absolutely don’t. Yes, I own this controller as well.
    I agree with you, there is no “Perfect”. It’s all up to the buyer. But there is one area where there is no comparison, build quality and features. Denon hands down. Period. Yes, I’ve OWNED the XZ all the way down. The build quality with Denon is remarkable. As far as software, Engine DJ, I agree as well, is not going to fix the world or change how one DJ’s.
    Serato and Virtual DJ are tenured and reliable, yet again, your right, crashes happen.
    I appreciate you specifying which audience this post is for, your right, there’s no perfect.

I own the sc5000s and I I also bought the Denon prime 4. I know that since it's a lower cost all in one that I shouldn't expect everything. The 1000 isn't stand alone and not even in the same ballpark so that was there main selling point was the full size jogs. If they want bigger jogs then go with the sc5000 or sc5000m. Denon brought 4 channels, a 10 inch screen, a spot for a hard drive/SSD and people still find stuff to bitch about. Pioneers standalone xdj r2 is only 2 channels and the jogs are actually smaller than the prime 4. Screen is smaller as well

    I agree with you 100% Cleveland Terry. I had a few discussions about the Denon Prime 4 and how it will change the game as far as controllers are concern. Don't get me wrong. It is a awesome piece of DJ equipment and I am certain fellow DJs will run out and get one. It won't be me. When I first learn how to DJ, my mentor instruct me to get a Pioneer and don't look back. The WEGO 4 was my first controller. I use Virtual DJ instead of Rekordbox. My reason was I didn't understand the software at that time and feel more comfortable using VDJ. I heard that Rekordbox was new and there were issues with the software. I stuck with VDJ until I felt it was time to upgrade. I couldn't afford the DDJ 1000 at the time (if I did, I would have brought it) and I really wanted to learn the Rekordbox software so I could play out without the use of my laptop. When the DDJ 400 came out, I knew it was the opportunity to learn Rekordbox. I purchased it last fall and slowly but surely learned the ins and outs of Rekordbox. Building a playlist, saving it to my usb and analyze. I was not swayed by the "latest and greatest" or "The Future of DJ Controllers." As long as I can hone in my DJing skills and it didn't break my wallet, I was in. The DDJ 400 cost $250 with a fully license Rekordbox. That was a game changer for me. My next controller will be the DDJ 1000. I know the DDJ 800 is out but it doesn't have what I need to transitions for controller to actually Pioneer CDJs and Mixer (Nexus). The DDJ 1000 is the closest thing to a full DJ unit but it is a controller. I am fine with that. The cost of the DDJ 1000 vs the Prime 4 is all I need to know. The DDJ 1000 cost $1200 usd where as the Denon Prime 4 cost $1700 usd. I am sorry but I can't see myself spending that kind of $$ on a controller (standalone or not).
    Final Point: DJs (beginner or upcoming), don't let anyone sway you from getting a controller that you feel comfortable with and the price is right. DJs will always need a laptop at some point or another. Especially, now since Pioneer hardware will no longer support Senato. That's a discussion for another time. I chose Pioneer controller because I wanted to learn Rekordbox. Now when I play out in gigs, I upload my USB and backups with my playlist or tracks I will use for that night and I am off. It been analyze with my cue points so I'm ready to play and have fun without bringing my controller. Since I am a House and Techno DJ, this works for me. I hope this help. Do your own research and make certain the controller you purchase is what you want and fit your needs. That's important. Later and Thanks again Cleveland Terry 4 this video.

    Hi Cleveland, I think a point you may have not included which a lot of reviewers sometimes leave out of reviews for DJ controllers is the Sound quality. This apparently has superb sound quality and sounds better then a cdj rx2 and pioneer ddj 1000. Surely sound quality is one of the most important elements as to why someone should buy a controller. I know you said in the comments that you didn't chat about price, but I think it's important to mention in order for viewers to understand what value they are getting compared to other similarly priced controllers.

    I've had my Prime 4 about 2 months now and I'm somewhat disappointed with it. Organizing and setting up my music has been very difficult and hard to find on this thing. I've been adding crates of different genres to be able to access my files more easily and it's been so tedious. The manual is vague and doesn't give enough information nor instructions on how to do this and same with the Engine software....not enough and concise instructions. Another thing is I cannot mix Music Videos except in Audio mode. As a Stand Alone it's great as long as you have all your files organized and easy to access, but it will take a long time to get those files ready for the dancefloor, especially if you have an extensive collection.

      Update:
      I've installed an SSD inside my Prime 4 Controller and it's easier to transfer batches of files at a time. You just connect the USB to your computer and open Engine software and drag and drop files either from PC or external drive into SSD crates listed which hopefully you've created. This is easiest for me because I can drag and drop files according to genre. I use an app called Meta to first edit Metadata / Tags and get album covers then save my files with all proper data so it's more organized and easier to find. Also cool to see album covers on display. One good note is that during the copy and paste files get analyzed and BPM and track Time are automatically added.

    This unit reminds me of those all in one stereos back in the 80’s& 90’s where you had a turntable(cheap),tuner,eq,tape cassette deck, & amplifier all in one. What happened with those units was if one area was not working then you had to send the whole thing in to get repaired. When everything was separated, you send the piece that was broken. The only thing the Denon Prime is offering is convenience.

    I have a Pioneer DJM 750 and 2 CDJ 900 and my SL 3 box. I have played a few nights from a 32gb flash drive when a friend borrowed the Serato box. The console is bulkier and heavier than ANY controller, but sounds superior than a SZ 2!

  • @djceez1

    I have the DDj1000 since last year. First time I’ve owned a Pioneer. In the pass I’ve owned Denon DJ and I was always loyal to Serato. I wish the DDj1000 was compatible with Serato however Rekordbox with its recent updates seems to be getting better. Engine Prime software seems to be good but it’s not yet seasoned like Serato or Rekordbox. Virtual DJ seems to work pretty good with my 1000, even with a Serato skin to emulate Serato, but it’s just not Serato.... if Prime 4 is gonna be Denon Dj’s flagship controller, it should have had larger jog wheels and better faders to at least match the 1800 Prime just as DDj1000 compares to 900NX. I understand Denon made this to cater to mobile DJs and would compromised the size of the unit. I believe it depends on who is going to use this. A mobile DJ would benefit with this however would still need some sort of computer, tablet or phone to download request that you don’t have in the unit. Well that’s my 2 cents..

    I agree and think that some are getting a bit carried away by calling this "the end all". It's a welcomed piece of equipment that only adds more flexibility to the DJ industry. And it really all depends on the type of DJ that you are. However, I will say that this unit is in deed a game changer. I am getting one and I will be using it with a computer as well as standalone. Sometimes, I just need to mix with the music that will already be on the player. Other times I may need Serato (computer) to add my drum machine and synth that adds some flare or may need to access more music like you mentioned. People that see this as a standalone only are probably kidding themselves. There's more under this hood.

  • @MrDJBigKing
    @MrDJBigKing Před 5 lety

    I will say this is perfect for the everyday wedding type DJ, people who do a lot of school events or mobile DJs that are not heavy on major Transitions and some of the formats switches in life sets. I also think that engine Prime is just now starting out and we'll be making better improvements but as of right now they're not to the caliber with I would need it for live shows. I'm not knocking dinning it's a great controller but I recommend getting your hands on the control yourself before making any decisions. It may actually be for you it just wasn't for me.

  • @triggr74
    @triggr74 Před 5 lety

    I bought one myself. The reason I bought it was to have some sort of a backup. I will keep on using serato as my main software. I am using the stand alone just in case my computer crashes. I own the Mixdeck quad but don't really like how it handles the USB stick in stand alone. I really don't use the cds on it either. I think this will work for me that way. I also like the extra zone out. I own the mc7000 which I like a lot. My practice controller is a roland 200. So hopefully, it will work as I'm thinking it will. The only thing I'm afraid of is that if the software in the prime 4 goes down, the mixer will also cut out and won't let me execute my back up such as my phone and/or iPad to keep music flowing. We'll see how it goes. I do like all the bells and whistles though, which are not needed, but I just like them, lol. You all have a great day.
    P.S. I also agree it will not change/save the DJ world, lol

    Ha Ha nice video and topic as always..That has always been my point every DJ I came across at a bar or club that using a standalone USB controller still has a laptop right there in front of them so I guess it not the old school look Djs are shooting for, I recently gave my XDJ R1 standalone CD unit to my older brother he wanted something cause he didnt have a computer at his avail when he wanted to play music, I understand that situation I let it go with only my DDJ 1000 to use, The laptop will be your best alternative in any situation I have use my computers sound card to pull off many tragic situations that the crowd never knew, a small external mixer and laptop u can make it through the event. Do a video on alternative options during crash situations can your controller provide sound without computer or vice versa.

    Purchased the prime 4 and had it set up in 2 days including Tidal subscription and learned how to integrate the new update for soundswitch into my lighting fixtures. True to fashion I watched the tutorials on CZcams to have a knowledge of how to import my library from serato which kept cue points , key and bpm info intact. To me the crates are straight forward and easy to navigate because I just imported the whole crate and the playlists followed. I know this vid is old but this is the one time where I will disagree with Terry. As a mobile/ club DJ this is probably the best investment I’ve made. Laptops can crash as well which would render your set done. Nice to plug speakers in load up prime in seconds, sound check and ready to turn up!. Soundswitch integration via Ethernet cable is a smart add in. The zone feature is also a smart and great for weddings running music for cocktail hour with a prepared folder on the drive or with music from your iPad/iPhone playlist with a charging port in the back of the player, my logo on the player is sweet and plenty of ports for additional usbs a plus. I started with denon back in the day and sound quality has always been full and warm. The fx are post fader and the washout is my fav. If you like the faders can be easily upgraded and fader caps changed via chroma caps ( dj tech tools for a better feel) Mojax mentioned a crank for screen lift in his review but I prefer this as such because it is simple and to the point ( crank mechanisms snag and wear out. The sampler is not a deal breaker for me because I simply have a crate of drops and fire them on deck three or four but should be and easy update by having a shift option to the player. Updating ensures that the user experience will continue to grow and I’m excited to see what they add in the future. I give this unit 9 out of 10 because they have some things to catch up on but am very happy owning this all in one controller.

    My thoughts,
    I'm not sure why everyone seems drawn to its 10 inch screen as it offers a couple disadvantages. Look it's too small, with 2 decks and library each section is less than 3.5 inches to navigate this unit, that's too small....run 4 decks and it's even more absurd. If that screen fails or breaks you have only line level mixer ability. The unit in a case will be heavier than many realize, and Engine Prime is still just engine Prime. A better option is a modular screen implementation like maybe the Mixon 4 from Reloop uses, if you could use say a iPad 12.9 to operate similar to the Prime 4 with with a area to dock it that might be a better option.

    I agree with most of what you’re saying here, and I’m someone that plans on buying one in a week or so. Just want to throw this out there, in case you weren’t aware... the bit about getting songs on the fly, will be possible with the Prime 4. All units are equipped with a WiFi card, and they’re going to drop an update (supposedly this summer) to activate it and allow music streaming. Do I think this is the most ground breaking thing ever? No. Just happens to be what I believe will work great for me.

    Thank you for this pragmatic overview. I have a ddj1000 and I absolutely love it, but the appeal of an all in one like the Prime 4 has been on my mind a ton but ultimately like you said, having a laptop allows for more flexibility cause you can search for and download new songs on the go for requests... and capability wise (aside from the onboard computer), it really doesn’t add to the capabilities that I already have with a ddj 1000 so it’s not really an upgrade, but a suitable replacement depending on your workflow. For me I see the ddj1000 going strong for years to come... that said Pioneer really gave everyone the middle finger with Rekordbox 6... so in a few years if they drop support for Rekordbox 5, then I might be looking to jump off the pioneer ship. Hopefully with enough of their user base complaining about it they’ll stop the stupid subscription model plan and go back to a software you can actually purchase.

    Hi everybody after going through all these yes and those comments for and against I agree and I disagree stepping forward in technology which is great but as time goes by the bees are marked to and there will be more modifications to improve this device the only thing I’m disappointed with it is it needs a bigger screen With a bigger screen going to 12.9 inch or even 15 inch would be great then you could use some visual settings to suit the person or put in accessibility features meaning you could change it to suit you enlarging certain things and decreasing other things this is only early days but I believe it’s standalone looks it might be the way of the future but they need to make it durable as close to 98% of quality because nothing is 100%

    I am new and I am a Denon man. That Denon 6000Mk2 controller was the ultimate swiss army knife for mobile DJs and it was compact. It was also able to be mapped to any software. Seraro, Virtual DJ, Cross, Algoriddim, Traktor. It also had standalone functionality on the other channels and was Serato DVS certified. Not sure if it had Rekordbox compatibility.
    Their Prime series CDJs and the motorized CDJs were awesome. However, I understand why people like Pioneer. There is NO way this all in one unit will change everything for one reason...everyone isn't a Denon person. And Engine software is not matured yet, much like Rekordbox still has its growing pains.
    If people really don't want a computer, there's CDJs. There's 12s and a mixer. Hell Numark has some price conscious 12s and mixers for people. Hell, the Numark Mixdeck Express Mk2 is a controller that can play CDs, USBs, laptop and it has 3 channels. But it can run fully standalone if you use the CDs and USBs. I will say one thing...I love your channel. I like your opinions.
    But I do think they are moving DJing/music production back to standalone units. Look at what Akai has done with the MPC. The X and the Live are completely standalone. Akai also released the Force for Ableton based producers. Even Pioneer has its XDJ-RR. I think they're moving standalone.

  • @weddingdjtipsandtricks6531

    Ok everyone, let's get down to basics. Before I state my case I want to tell you my background. I've been a wedding dj for over 25 years. I was there when the switch from tape to CD happened, then from CD to mini disc, and from mini disc to laptop and now to this.
    With that being said I want to say a couple of things. First, Terry makes some great points. Will the Prime 4 fix the world...no. are there going to be growing pains? Yes. But...is it a step in the right direction...Hell Yes.
    Second, we are missing one key thing in this entire conversation. BACKUP EQUIPMENT. If you are a mobile dj and don't carry back up gear...especially a laptop...your basically having sex with a hooker and not wearing a condom. You're asking for trouble. I always carry 2 laptops with me. The prime 4 just takes the place of one of those laptops.
    Third, Terry is forgetting 1 thing about the touch screen. You can plug in a keyboard into the unit. And I'm sure Demon will do an update where you can use a mouse as well. Also, you can still connect your laptop to the unit while you are using it.
    Finally, I agree with several of Here's points. And I agree that the Prime 4 isn't going to be the end all, be all. But that's the same with any controller. The DDJ-1000 can fail too. That's why you ALWAYS carry back up gear.
