  • Join me for a walk around the centre of St Andrews, one of the most historic towns in Scotland! Formerly the country's most important religious site, at one point home to the largest cathedral in Europe, St Andrews is today well-known for its medieval heritage, as well as its legendary university (the oldest in Scotland), and its spectacular golf course (the oldest in the world!).
    On our walk around St Andrews, we pass a number of fascinating landmarks, including St Andrews Cathedral, St Andrews Bay, Castle Sands Beach, Castle Pool (May Dip Pool), St Andrews Castle, All Saints' Church, St Andrews Heritage Musuem & Garden, St. Rule's Tower, The Pends, St Andrews War Memorial, North Street, St. Salvator's Chapel, Salvator's Quad, St Andrews Union Coffee Bar, Market Street, the Whyte-Melville Memorial Fountain, South Street, Blackfriars and West Port Gate.

    Good evening! Thank you so much for helping us to over 7,900 subscribers, I’m really glad you’re enjoying all the videos! This evening, we’ll be going for a walk around one of the most historic towns in Scotland: St Andrews!
    There’s so much to St Andrews that we certainly can’t cover it in just one video, but we made brief mention of the ‘May Dip’ tradition of the university’s students. That’s not the only university tradition, however. Down in front of St. Salvator’s Chapel where Patrick Hamilton was burned at the stake, you’ll find the initials ‘PH’. Legend dictates that if a student steps on the ‘PH’, they will have bad luck in their exams…

    I was a student at St Andrews (2000-2004) it’s such a beautiful town. I used to live in a flat above the Westport bar in my final year. You can see the steps next to the Westport gate.

      Wow! That sounds absolutely wonderful - particularly living so close to a beautiful part of local history like the Westport Bar.
      Studying in St Andrews for so long must have been wonderful - and I do hope this video brought back some memories of that time for you :) Thank you so much for watching!

    St. Andrew's town in Scotland. Is very beautiful and historical. The history lessons are great. And your walks are always wonderful and enjoyable, I like the medieval buildings, and churches also. Can't wait to see more soon. Greetings from Canada. How's your week going? Mine is going well. 😀😀

    So much history is packed into the streets of this small town, and it's also quite a vibrant place too because of the university. One of my favourites, and some lovely coastline to explore nearby in east Fife too. Can't wait to visit again - you've brought back many nice memories.

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  Před 2 lety +1

      It really is! It's remarkable just how much heritage you can find in St Andrews, and we didn't even get the chance to mention the stories of each and every building along its three main roads, which could keep us walking around the town forever :)
      The whole Fife coast really is very pretty, and stay tuned for a walk around the centre of Crail coming in the near future - I love that town!
      Thank you so much for watching and for your very kind words - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and that it brought back some nice memories of St Andrews for you!

      It really is one of the most delightful towns - and so full of history that's played a big part in Scottish history! As you mention, there's so much to explore it could be hours (or even days) before you'd cover everything to see in St Andrews :)

    Lovely place to visit, our last visit to Scotland was a stay in Pitlochry in March 2019, we drove to St. Andrews and had a walk round to the Castle and the Abbey, as English Heritage members we got into the Historic Scotland properties for free, always a plus for a Yorkshireman.
    We should have gone to Portpatrick on the 30th. Of March 2020 but we all know why that didn’t happen, if Wee Krankie permits we will try again next March.
