Sarah Thawer knows how to make people dance with her drumming - and she’s here to teach you five things to consider so yours gets the audience grooving, too.
The goal is to hold the pulse and make the music feel good - but how do you get your audience to feel the pocket? Look into the audience while you’re playing. Are they bobbing their heads or are they bored?
It’s up to you, as the drummer, to make sure they’re moving.
So what do your beats need so they absolutely kill it at the club?
0:00 - Introduction
01:32 - Consistency
When someone can anticipate what’s going to happen next, they can get comfortable with the pattern or groove. If there’s too much going on, people don’t know what to grab onto.
Not only is a consistent pattern important, so is the sound balance. Every hit you play should be at the same volume as the previous one. Many of these dance genres - like EDM - use grooves based on drum machines and computers, so it’s important to be authentic to that.
03:44 - Four on the floor
This is essential to dance music - especially styles like soca or calypso - and it can get anyone on the dance floor. It gives people a pulse to follow. Keep that bass drum consistent and build on it. Even if your hands change what they’re doing, four on the floor will make sure you don’t throw off the audience.
05:16 - Space
Give the music a chance to breathe. If you listen to well produced music - especially in EDM - you’ll notice how much space there is in the song. Start simple. Four on the floor. And then add layers to build the groove.
07:01 - Melody
You can add a melody using other drums around the consistent kick and snare. A good way to test your idea is whether or not it makes your body want to move when you sing that melody in your head.
07:40 - Feel
What brings the feel in a groove? It’s more than just going through the motions. Are your notes and subdivisions tight while playing in the pocket? Are you behind or ahead of the beat? Are you paying attention to the dynamics between your limbs? Is your snare really popping? How much are you pushing it?
Take everything you’ve learned here and test it on friends, family, or at a gig. Does your drumming make people move? Whether you’re playing EDM, R&B, funk, gospel or other styles of dance music, you want to make sure the dance floor is packed. Go get ’em!

As a professional drummer I think I just watched the best teaching session ever and the most important one too! Well done Sarah!
She’s a great teacher. Speaks well and articulates, very expressive and knows her material. She’d be a blast to know in person.
You said it. 🙏
Two major principles: 1) never underestimate the power of a woman.
2)hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
NOW, I will introduce you to my sister.

Never underestimate the power of a woman with drumsticks.
I meet her in a Master class in México and she's so strong, excellent teacher, super funny and so kind too! She's the best!❤️ Has all pacage!
I love the way she plays and enjoys playing sick grooves!
Instant fan here.
I have the same exact funk and rhythmic intuition. When I close my eyes and listen to her play, I feel the notes... Every single one
I love Sarah.
She plays like a boss, knows her stuff, and presents content at a level for everyone to understand.
I love Sarrah more
Her intensity makes me scared but motivated at the same time. Excellent lesson, Drumeo!
I'm glad you said it. A bit freaky. In the first 30 seconds I thought she was calling up some witchcraft. But, I do agree. She has got some great stuff. Don't worry, I scrutinize myself the same way. I liked the one she did on Rupak. That one was less crazy eyed.
Holy shit I love her energy. More.
it's the coke
@@DeepZeea Coca cola is good but I like diet coke better
When I notice people aren't dancing I usually close my eyes and listen to myself playing until I really start feeling it and when I open my eyes again after 10 mins or so the dance floor is often much fuller.
So that's my pro tip. Close your eyes and listen. It's one of the perks of being at the back. You can go into your own little world.
Love her enthusiasm! These groove patterns are sweet! Bring her back more often Drumeo.
She really is a good teacher. She talks for a minute and then goes into an example, talks again for a minute and then an example. That keeps me engaged in what she is saying , as opposed to some teachers that talk for 10mins before touching their drums. She also doesn't get complicated and keeps things simple, which helps drive the point she is making.
Someone made fun of me for making faces while I play but she just made me realize WHO CARES!!!
We can't help it unfortunately. Oh well do we care 😂 😂 😂.
If you're not making faces while jamming, are you really jamming?
@@brandonchaizhe4147 I was going to say: A drummer without a drumming face? Nah!
Pleas watch Harry Miree for extra encouragement on the faces

This is the first time I've seen Sarah Thawer, and I can see right away that she is a great teacher! Her chops, her enthusiasm, her knowledge, her simple grooves, and her amazing ability to get to the essence is exemplary. I love her attitude!
I'm beginning to enjoy your style more and more. I have no clue what you're talking about (not a drummer), but I like learning what the hell is going on. Respect to all your drummers.
Well done, Sarah! So much of what’s going on right now with drummers is quantity over quality. All these Insta drummers playing lots of notes without any meaning or substance behind. And the young people who watch them think that’s “the way”. Thank you for bringing it back to earth with your incredible feel and pocket. 👏
As a trini church drum player... She's teaching everything I had to learn by force
This is awesome. You are a natural communicator. Good lesson, too!
my mum always said.
It's not what u say, but how you say it.
she's saying, it's not what you play, but how u play it.
So refreshing to hear, a drum lesson on feeling. Drumming is mostly about feeling not just technique. love this. It's so real and normal and not a bit robotic. thanks
Im not a drummer, just a student of music and, Sarah is an incredibly engaging/captivating/exciting teacher.
Thank you Sarah!
If you keep watching her you will eventually get infected by the groove virus.
It's just a matter of time.
@@danielmconnolly7 may there never be a vaccine developed!
"Four on the floor" works on rock'n'roll too, just listen to the early AC/DC, Phil Rudd (who's a criminally underrated drummer) often plays this way, that's the main reason why you can't help but shake your head, i noticed that even on very young children.
Look up the word "pocket" and you get a picture of Phil Rudd.
Your drum playing wonderfully embodies the expression "Less is more" 👌🏽 Thank you for this precious lesson.
Yes, space. JB mastered playing the notes when it felt right and stayed in time. Yoyoka figured exactly that out and covered it flawlessly. As a guitarist I play to stringent machine drums, so I play between and skip notes and timing letting the drums breathe. Simple IS golden if you have chops that shine (like yourself).
The passion in her face is infectious, what an amazing drummer!!!!
This was amazing!
This old blues drummer is looking forward to more great videos. We can always learn more. Thanks.
Sarah is one of my favorite drummers, and by far my favorite teachers.
I love the snare sound Clean and perfect for calypso.
Not even a minute in to the video and I already love her energy!
"[...] EDM... and well produced music also."
Subtle, but lovingly shady
Suspicious but satisfying.. 😋
🤣🤣
This has to be the most encouraging lesson for a startup upstart like me ever. Thank you Sarah‼️✌️
So clearly explained and demonstrated. So much good info in just eleven and a half minutes! She's terrific,
I'm so very impressed, this is a total package, good tips and ideas and Sarah just delivers on the performance and presentation.
I've lately been trying to remind myself of the importance of groove, and making it dance-able. The two tunes that always come to mind for me are Daft punk's "give life back to music" and "lose yourself to dance", both from the Random Access Memories album. Simple, but really tough to master, and endlessly fun to practice to. Sometimes it's tough to reign it in and not go all Animal on the tune!
Sarah has this down, and it's really fundamental to what we do as drummers. Great video! Makes me want to play at midnight when the kids are sleeping!
R.A.M has some awesome tracks in terms of just intelligent, danceable drums (and everything else). It just has groove. Such a cool album.
Hi, I learned how to play drums on your channel so I just want to say thank you so much we love you guys wish you the best ❤
That's so awesome - thanks! 🙏
@Dan Day You must be fun at parties... can't you just let the kid be happy?
Thank you SO much! Girl, you are someone I'd take private lessons from. Your personality is so attractive and fun! I love your teaching style. Thanks for these amazing tips! I was literally dancing in my seat. 💪🏽😆 Thanks yet again Drumeo crew!!!
What music makes you dance?
Me, a Metalhead:
...YUURRRRR...
Technically, headbanging is dancing🤘

Sarah rocks! She is a powerhouse and incredible drummer and teacher.
Love listening to her!❤️
Valuable drumming points, Sarah - and I can see you are a great drummer. Thanks for sharing these good points. It is hard for me to explain sometimes certain ways of drumming - being in a groove and adding a little without overdoing it - making a simple beat a little more interesting but not straying away from what is needed to compliment the other instruments.
I'm pretty sure she was a pirate in a previous life. Really enjoyable energy.
Important lesson and well taught.
Great lesson! This kind of feeling in music is so often absent in stuff I hear today with all the computerized drums, even drummers trying to sound like drum machines now, or over emphasis on technicals and wall of notes. This is a great explanation of how to move beyond that and get back to playing drums that really move people and make them feel the music.
Hey Drumeo, Thanks a lot for bringing such great drummers for session. yesterday itself I was learning ghosts notes from Jared's video and it was really amazing. Thanks again. :)
Great lesson!!!! I love the way she recognizes what works. Also some great tips.
Shes one of the most creative and articulate Drummers I've seen.
Mad skills, interesting, fun, so learnable. Much respect! Thanks!
What an amazing teacher keeping the pocket clean and the grooves clear. I found myself seeing the linear space on the bass to the pulse of hi-hat in relationship to the snare. Thank you! Found a new master craftswoman to follow. 🥁🤘😎
Doing my first gig after lockdown soon. This was an epic reminder to make the audience dance! Many good tips, thank you!
As my teacher Rob Brown taught: “A drummer is a groove unit. One who serves the music and moves bodies!”
He wasn’t lyin’.😉
Great video, Sara. You’re a true inspiration.❤️
I really like the way you teach. You come across clear as day for me. Great work on that, plus any all the other stuff I’ve heard from you.
I really appreciate the explanation on how to keep dancers dancing. I play bass in a dance, often with differs drummers, and this is job #1.
Wow! I really like your style of instruction. Very engaging energy. I’ll definitely check out more of your stuff! 👍
This is the best explanation I have ever heard of how to play a real fun music. Such a great teacher
Thank you for your love of music, life and teaching! Without a pocket there is just noice! Space allows for others to fit in. Remembering we drummer are not the only members of the band!
Outstanding points. i've incorporated them all. Thank you.
I'm trying to tell my 15 years old unconfident self from 2000 that in 2020 they would finally be completely AWESOME videos featuring women on drums !
Great tips, music is all about feeling and dynamic awareness (in my opinion)
Glad to see I’m not alone. I had some takeaways from this. Well done.
I really like the way she explains that concepts. So clear and rational but passionate at the same time.
Awesome! One thing to help make yourself and people dance is to really feel the pulse and groove in your whole relaxed body, not just your hands/arms
She is so animated and I LOVE IT! Makes me want to go play asap! Thanks for sharing your talent young woman....
Sarah is a great teacher and beautiful Teacher. Stay Blessed
This video has taught me a lot. Thanks again to Sarah Thawer.
Very important tips! Beautiful drum sound especially her snare!
Ah! Great stuff Sarah! I can feel your positive vibes all the way over HERE!
I'm crazily wowed by the very beginning of this video till the end....That snare sound made the whole thing accelerate to a different level... quick tip: keep your snare sound at its best.... you'll be surprised
WOW can't stop dancing!! Great, thank you Sarah and Drumeo!!!
Really nice thank you so much....I like these type of concepts that make your playing evolve.
Omg! She is so great! I’m not even a drummer but I love everything she said. I wish she taught singing 😅❤ much love! Keep that groove going 🔥
I like her a lot, so expressive! I love enthusiasm. Thx
Great tips! Such an amazing human you are Sarah Thawer!
Sarah is just the best and the CZcams overloads must have been listening to me practicing and thinking “he’s trying to do too much” and suggested this vid.
Her enthusiasm and energy is so fantastic! :)
Nice ...solid foundation, timing, tone, space and accents, which support the music, and other musicians. Thanks for sharing!
One of the best videos from Drumeo. Cheers to Sarah 👏
Hey well done on that Calypso beat. Most people cant get it but never the less...it moves people, even if they cant keep up or dance out of time. Trinidad to the world !!! 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹
I love Sarah, one of my favorite drummers of all time and amazing teacher! Also, anyone notice she is looking a bit healthier since last video or just me?
So goooood. Excellent suggestions and explained sooooooooo well! Love her!
She loves what she does. I love how she gets into explaining everything. 🤘

Ohh God... I love watching her play grooves.. Brutally honest expression too.
She's the Bomb~💥
Great video you touched on the major points about groove awareness.
Don't Disrespect the Groove.
The groove needs space and needs to be solid.
