  • Even the most seasoned poker pros dread the prospect of David Peters joining their table, but having him seated on your direct left would be even more daunting. Mark Ioli discovered this first-hand during a blind-on-blind encounter with Peters. Ioli found himself in a tough river spot when faced with a massive overbet from Peters. Will he make the correct call to chop the pot?

When significant Independent Chip Model (ICM) implications are at play, it's highly advisable not to engage in large pots with marginal hands against a player who could knock you out of the tournament. This is especially true if there are shorter stacks than you at a final table who are very likely to bust first.

    $5,000 - 2024 PokerGO Cup Event #1 - Results
    1st: David Peters U.S.A - $141,525
    2nd: Mark Ioli ‘TheDutch4141 ’- U.S.A - $88,000
    3rd: Shawn Daniels - U.S.A - $63,825
    4th: Fabian Quoss ‘fabstinho’- German - $49,950
    5th: Dusti Smith - U.S.A - $36,075
    6th: Cody Daniels - U.S.A - $27,750
    🔍 Preflop:
The tournament chip leader Mark Ioli calls from the small blind with T5 of spades. David Peters is in the big blind with A5o and he decides to check rather than raise, and they both head to the flop.
    💸 Flop - Ah 4s 2s:
Ioli flops a gutshot straight draw and a flush draw. He leads out for 80,000. Peters has flopped top pair and a gutshot straight draw to the wheel as well. He calls, and they head to a turn.
    💣 Turn - 3d:
Both players improve to a five-high straight on the 3 of diamonds turn. Ioli checks, and Peters bets out for 300,000. Ioli chooses to call rather than check-raise with his wheel.
    🌊 River - 5d:
The 5 of diamonds on the river means that both players are playing the straight on the board, and if it goes to showdown it would be a split pot. Ioli checks after missing his flush draw. But what will Peters do on the river? Will he check it down and take the chopped pot, or will he fire out a bet in an attempt to scoop the entire pot? Stay tuned to the end of this poker video to find out.

What bet size do YOU think Ioli would have called on the river? 🤔

If there was a time for the move of: tank… sigh… sigh… oh well I am all in (as a bluff). This would be it!

I must be a total rec player because I'd snap call the $2M bet. When you play rec level players they always make a huge bet when it's 99% chance of a chop to see if you're stupid enough to not realize it's a chop on the board.

Happens all the time in microstakes cash. In ioli’s position I like to jam turn, hoping to river the Spade.

I guess 2 millions based on the fact there is a video with this title. I'd personally just checked and split the pot tho.

I'm guessing check back, more for tournament reasons than hand reasons.

One of my most painful losses in a tournament for me was 4 handed, final table, straight on the board. I bet 1/2 pot to try and get off a chop. Opponent shoves all in for 3x pot. I tank and call thinking he was doing the same thing. He shows me the nut straight. Im out in 4th. Just didn't think he had it. lol It sucks to be in that spot.

Assuming that Loli did not have a read on David, the chances of David having the 6 is about 17.2%. David had about $1.72 million left in his stack. If Loli called the bet, the expected value he would gain over folding would be about $70,000. If there no chance of the raise pushing David out of the pot, the expected value would be a loss of about $225,000 over folding. If there was at least a 14.3% chance of getting David to fold, raising would have been the best option. If there was less than a 14.3% chance of getting David to fold, calling would have been the best option.

Was it a huge mistake to check on the river there? You know you have to fold to a large bet, so perhaps just bet 1/3 or 1/2 pot to look like a value bet and invoke a call, but not get blown out by the follow-up all-in?

Was my first thought as well. However, the interesting question is how many of his 6x hands would actually be inclined to take the check-call big bet line on the Turn? Probably 65 and A6 !? - Overall, I might intuitively be more willing to bet with Ax, no spades, than with T5ss, the latter blocking loads of hands that could fold to a bet.

      @michaelphan6228 Před měsícem +3

He should never bet river because Peters has so much more 6x than he does. Ioli would either continue bluffing his 6x on the turn or check-fold (unless he had a specific combo draw) to the big bet. And fwiw, 1/3 pot bet would be atrocious on this board, and any competent player would snap raise lol. In fact, any bet less than 1.5x pot would be pretty bad on this runout. Peters played it very well.
