  • This video is to help workshop goers get an overview of how we will construct our mugs. Many parts of this process are customizable and I will provide a worksheet to help you brainstorm ideas. Follow up video to come of the firing and glazing process.
This is a fully narrated video with two camera angles to help you understand the process. Class is taught out of my home in Julian, California.

Amazing ideas with the handles I will definitely be trying it. Would love to see some of the mugs finished do you do kiln opening videos?

Thanks! This and the coil pot video were “workshop” style to prepare students coming to my house. I just didn’t have time to attach the kiln unloading before posting this for the class. Normally I try to add the finished product. I know it’s super annoying not to see the end result!

How do you keep clay from flopping when you are setting up the slab.

I allow the clay to firm up for awhile. It will hold its shape more easily. But I also sometimes have trouble with the clay flopping!

Sorry was out of town. The table surface is cement board. It’s nice because it’s absorbent so nothing sticks to it very long.

I was taught not to twist when cutting the base. Clay has memory

I think best practice is to move and manipulate the clay as little as possible, sure, but there’s also a lot of wiggle room depending on your goals and experience. I don’t think I was too worried about warping for this mug. :)

When I made a mug I used tin cans and other shapes of round molds to make my mug...I am not good at making mugs at all without molds...🙂☺

I used to do that too! It’s very helpful. This was for a quick class I was teaching. They probably would have appreciated the tin can mold. :)
