How I replaced my slab roller table top!
zhlédnutí 83Před 4 měsíci
Table top repair! This video won’t be relevant for too many people. Before I had a studio I lived in a small basement. I was still teaching at the time and was accumulating pottery equipment with no place to properly store it. So the table was covered in tarps for a few years while I used it outside. Unfortunately the elements were too much for the table top which became extremely warped. This ...
Open the glaze kiln with me!

I shot out of bed and ran to the kiln. Please excuse my everything. A couple of explanations… 🔸The pottery was about 150*, great temperature for a kiln opening, still a bit warm for the fingers. 🔸Crawling refers to glaze separating and moving over the clay body. This leaves gaps in the glaze. I can normally add some glaze to the gaps and refire. Crawling is generally from applying glaze before ...
Glaze day in my messy studio!

Glaze day! Happy dance! My kiln has been out of commission for a few weeks so I am VERY EXCITED to get all the pots fired and to test out a few new colors! Unfortunately there is a power outage scheduled tonight so I have to wait a whole extra day! 🥺 Potters do you wipe down your bisque ware? I’m aware that it’s “not necessary” but frankly I’m too nervous to test it out. Even if it works I’m co...

Hi! Using clay I attach handles to large teacups and pull the handle into a nice 2 finger hold. Not pictured in the video I use a clay extruder to create large coils. They're actually about .75" in diameter. If you don't have an extruder all you have to do is roll out long ropes of clay. Let me know if you have any questions.

      I think best practice is to move and manipulate the clay as little as possible, sure, but there’s also a lot of wiggle room depending on your goals and experience. I don’t think I was too worried about warping for this mug. :)

      If I’m in a hurry I can do that, but I try to only use it for the last bits of drying, not the full process. It’s been pretty rainy so everything is taking its sweet time drying. But no hurry!

    Another tip from years ago. Instead of buying expensive 'pottery' plaster get a bag of gauging plaster. (it's the stuff they use to plaster walls ( the old time way, instead of drywall.)

    • @sonja.ceramics
      @sonja.ceramics Před 4 měsíci

      That’s super helpful, thanks! Would you use that for molds as well? I bought hydro stone or hydro cal (can’t remember and not in the studio right now) to finish pouring my damp boxes when I couldn’t get any pottery plaster. The great people at the clay shop mentioned the plaster I bought is less absorbent than potter plaster which is why I didn’t use it on my reclaim table. Hence the mold question. I don’t use molds but I’d like to get them figured out someday. Maybe I’ll hunt down some gauging plaster and do some experiments. Someday. So much to do. 😊

    • @sonja.ceramics
      @sonja.ceramics Před 4 měsíci

      Also would that mean someone would put up a piece of board and then put a thick layer of plaster on it? Were the walls 1/6”? Sounds thin!

  • @steveday6246
    @steveday6246 Před 4 měsíci

    I pour the plaster slabs thicker; about 2 inches. Less chance of them cracking when clay is kneaded on them.

    I absolutely love these I watched the process through twice but I'm really curious how did you get the glaze to not be on part of the stamp and the other part? did You Use wax somehow and then wipe it back? I'm really struggling with carvings and things like that and getting the glaze to cooperate and wax is confusing ha ha
