Dodge Hemi Daytona 1st Start Attempt

  • This was a live broadcast originally, and is missing some sound in the middle. You might want to skip to the 32 minute mark! Total time from 1st start attempt to the final 32 minute mark was 45 minutes after cutting out some stuff in the middle. This is a Hemi automatic, my excitement statement might throw you off!

As a GM/Pontiac guy , my buddy bought a 1969 RR with a 1970 440 automatic and asked me to work on it. I gladly accepted the challenge. I installed an electronic ignition including new distributor. Researching dropping a distributor into a 440 I found information that indicated the rear of the rotor button is supposed to point to number 1 cylinder , unlike a Pontiac , although both turn counter clockwise. I did not have to move the intermediate shaft, basically just swapped the distributors. She fired right up and after fine adjustments she is counting them off, sounds like someone installed a performance camshaft. New floor and trunk pans, complete front end rebuild power steering and brakes including front disc conversion. To be honest I ran vin number and it was born a satellite, car was misrepresented to my friend. So as such we are continuing on with a restomod. Still a cool car.
You guys rock , it's so cool to see these cars cared for and kept as they were born. I am becoming a Mopar fan to be sure , will be watching.Subbed.👍👍🏁🏁

Here is what I do to set up distributor timing. Use the timing marks on the harmonic balancer and line them up so you are at TDC. Set the distributor in place and get the rotor to point at #1 plug wire in cap. You can turn the oil pump if you can't get the distributor to locate. After you get the rotor to point at #1 plug wire turn it a little advanced and you should be there. Turn the engine over and double check. COOL CAR!!!

Seems to me when you primed the oil pump if the pump wasn't in the exact spot you starter timing could be off anywhere within 360 degrees. Why didn't you put in at Tdc before you pulled the distributor then when you put it back in then it could be on or out 180 . As I recall the shaft and cam gear are set so if pump is turned it's going to be out of time .I'm just a Mopar junkie not a mechanic but I'd worked on a few of the hundreds of Mopar I've owned but none of them had a wing
