  • The story of Chrysler's legendary NASCAR freak has been told a thousand times, and we all know about the big parts like the nose and wing, but we've never seen anyone detail all of the little bits that add up to the total package.
We take a tour from nosecone to tailight of this beautiful one of a kind Bronze example and show all the places where the sun never shines.

When I was 16. My buddy had a girl friend. In her neighborhood a guy had one of these in Red with a White stripe and White interior. The car was already six years old. But still in great condition. The guy was friend's with his girlfriend older brother. We got to ride in his Daytona. It was like being in a freak of nature. 440 and a 4-speed. The car floated down the road till about 100 MPH. Then it settled down and planted to the road. Wow, What a car! We would talk about being at the track and going 200 MPH. Really miss those days. They couldn't give these car's away at the dealership. The insurance alone was just more than the average young driver could afford. A Charger was never a 4 - door car. Like today's Chargers. Shawn.

The Charger was a Peugot & VW powered Four Banger - remember that? The L platform Shelby's? I'll take today's well - the 10+ year old Daimler platform Charger etc uses today over those weird FWD "Chargers". And you're right about they couldn't give the Superbird/Daytonas away. As a kid in '71 I had a '68 Coronet 500 HT really nice B Body - eventually sold it to a buddy for 5 bills and added my own 5 bills to walk into a New London CT Mopar dealer and get my brand new '74 'Cuda $4k with that $1k down. Cross the Thames river where Mystic is there was a tiny Plymouth dealer that still had a beige with black vinyl roof Superbird they couldn't sell or maybe it was a year before I pulled the trigger on a new car but I remember thinking BEIGE???? BLACK VINYL ROOF? (All Superbirds had vinyl roofs to cover the bad welds) BIG WING?? SNOUT? And I was a FAN of Mopars as a kid. It was a 440 not a Hemi which also played into the "there's NOTHING good about this car" but I thought about it for a millisecond. Oddly I miss the Coronet 500 coupe more than the E Body 'Cuda 360 - and a Coronet 500 of '68 is more rare to boot. Peace! 🚗

That car would sit you back in those high back bucket seat. Off the line. From first to second. It would also chirp the tires during shifting. Two weeks later he rolled it after hitting a cement corner post. He took that insurance money and bought a Super Bee 383 4 barrel. Bench seat and a high shifter to clear the Bench seat. So he found a beat up satalight got a knock off nose & wing & we made a clone . I sanded the hell out of it to make it where you could not tell one from the other & he drove it all over the place . My friend & I engraved clone in spots so a buyer would know just in case it was hard to find unless your were a serious buyer . also a side note to the Daytona fender extractors. the race teams would cutout the tops of the fenders under the extractor to allow the top of the tire to travel past the top of the fender with a end result of being able to run the car at a lower ride height they also extracted heat off the brakes and assisted in venting high pressure air flow from under the car.

My uncle lived in the Baudette MN area and supposedly saw hundreds of Daytonas and super birds drive by one day back in the late 60s. I think Baudette was a common testing area then so it's fairly possible.

Love those race modded cars from the late 60s and early 70s. It was an amazing time.

Memory lane and answered my question @ 9:13. My mom's '69 LTD had headlight covers that would only open and close 3 times with the motor off. Too cool.

Beautiful car!! We had a Daytona back in the early 80's. It was worn but complete with no rust. There wasn't much demand for them then. If I remember correctly we sold it to some guy out in Kansas for five grand and thought that to be top dollar.

My uncle was a Chrysler Plymouth dealer in the sixties and seventies. When the transporter with a Super Bird pulled up in front of his store he didn't want to let them take it off the truck. He called his factory rep to complain "nobody's gonna buy that". He finally took it and sold it the next day for sticker price.

A neighbor had a 500 charger. As a kid Not realizing how rare they are I kept asking Him why he didn't have the hidden headlights. He would told me it was better for racing.

The VIN info is good to know, a few of these beasts sat on a dealer floor, since insurance was bad enough in 1969 that small block muscle cars were the fad. Even 427 COPO Novas sat. So some dealers took off the bodywork and tried to sell these cars off as their "From the Factory" setting.
Allegedly, the pebble grain vinyl tops on the Superbirds broke up the boundary layer on the roof, helping airflow like dimples on a golf ball.
