Nice work man. I’m in same boat.. 93 940 wagon and the gas gauge has been dead for 20 yrs so I use the trip meter. My speedo needle is bouncing right now and it’s definitely a bad sensor or wires or both. The cluster went 2 yrs ago and I had it repaired.

Idle started acting up on my 91 940 turbo, speedometer, odometer and trip meter died so i check the vss sensor on the diff and the insulation in the harness was gone and shorting ,so i fixed it but still no luck, also i got code 311 for missing vss signal, maybe the sensor is bad ,cool that you fixed yours man 👍

Thank you, that's very helpful. 1991 740T: the wires going into the speed sensor on differential are bare and sort of decomposing. Speedometer stopped working but a week ago I drove for 90 minutes at 65mph and then parked. On the return trip, the speedometer and odometer worked for 35 miles, but hasn't worked since. Where did you get the red/white wires and especially the connector that inserts into your new sensor (so-sensor 1398321 on your invoice) ? I would like to try to replace the wires and connector, as you did initially. And how far back from the sensor did you cut the 2 wires? Thanks!

I can’t find where I bought the pig tail online. Most likely eBay. Search Volvo speed sensor pig tail. I didn’t cut too much but passed the corrosion part. If I could give a good guess a foot and half of wire. It was very simple. I’m having troubles though with check engine light. It’s been over one month since I changed it . And my check engine light came on with code for speed sensor. Even tho I replaced it and it’s working, it’s giving me the code to check it. Maybe I had the wires mixed up I’m not sure I’m going to have to dive more into it. But good news is it’s still working

There's a 1995 volvo 940 locally I'm thinking about looking at. Only has 160k miles on it. Would you get it? Anything I should be looking out for? They want $3,000 for but trying to get them down closer to $2,000.

They want 3k cause they know it’s wanted now a days. I got it during the sweet spot where people didn’t know these last a long time and are good reliable cars. Tried to sell it to me for 1.2k and I talked them down to 1k because the ac didn’t work. I’d get it for 2.5k but no more than that. Because you’d probably put $500 into it from the get go. I love my car, I’m going to keep this one. If I were to get another Volvo it would be a wagon I’m actually looking for. 160k miles for a Volvo brick is barley breaking its cherry. Open the hood check to see where the Volvo was made. You can see the vin number/plate it tells you made in Sweden.

I’m at 460k miles. I got it at 400k miles. Everyone told me it was a dumb choice to make because of its high miles. I looked at it as if it was a smart decision. If it made it that far that means it’s gotta be a good car.

I just bought a 740 early last year for 1.5 dash wasn’t working tho still isn’t but the rest of the car is clean spent probably close too another grand just replacing old parts and getting a new exhaust built if this hole car runs me under 3k it’s well worth it I see people trying to sell there’s for 7 - 12 k now in aus

Thanks for this, I think my 740 has the same problem. I went to check the diff oil level and found the cables to the sensor chewed up. How did you know which wires to put where? I'm going to give that a shot and hopefully it my speedometer comes back. Otherwise, I'll do what you did and get a new sensor. Cheers!

I didn’t know for sure with the wires! I just tried them both ways. First time replaced the wiring harness… and tried switching the wires and no progress. Ended up getting lucky when I got the speed sensor. If it don’t work one way it’s not hard to flip the wires it didn’t damage mine. Working great today. I should have taken pictures before even messing with it to begin with.

Good news. My pig tail came undone from the sensor(just slipped and shifted off). That’s why the check engine light came on. All I had to do was go down there and press it in all the way til it clicked. Very simple mistake on my end. Hope you find the right pig tail for your 740:)
