I've just had this problem start today, on my 1995 940 TDi Estate. It's good to see that it's not a dangerous problem, other than the speedometer not showing. I have a digital speedometer I can use, until I can get it fixed.
This is a known problem with the 7/9-series and it is usually the instrumentcluster! The problem is the soldering points on the backside brakes and when the car is vibrating it looses and gaines contact.
On my dads car you can tap the front glas and it starts to work again.
I would also replace the wiring that goes from the sensor up into the cabin (underneath the rear cargo panels).
