    Some years ago I repaired my fuel gauge, had to change 2 capacitors, so now it's working.
    I have also repaired my odometer? don't know the right name of it but it's the one that show how many kilometers you have driven. The fault was a small spur gear made of some rubber/plastic that had lost a couple of teeths. Today I helped my neighbour with his 1998 Volvo 945. Changed the speed sensor located at the rear axle because the ABS-lamp was on but the speedometer was still working. The sensor was faulty, high resistans. After that I cleared the fault code and the ABS-lamp is now off. Thanks for your Volvo videos and keep the coming!

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  Před 2 lety

      Ah yeah, I recently did the same repair to the odometer on the 240, luckily those gears are easily available. That's good to know, I have an ABS light on the 740 and no speedometer so perhaps the sensor is at fault also

      @@Involvod You can measure the resistans of the speedo sensor in the rear axle with a multimeter. It shall be around 800-900 ohms if it's ok. The sensor can be a hassle to remove though.
      I had to remove the rear axle cover om my neighbours Volvo to remove the sensor from inside to out and then put new oil in. Oh and there is no gasket between the cover and the final gear assembly. You must use some good packing adhesives. The front ABS-sensors should have a resistanse of around 1000 ohms if they are ok. Take care and I wish you good luck. :)

      @tompas11A3n52KkX Před 2 lety

      @@peterelias2345 Whitout proper instruments för testing capacitors it's hard to tell if a capacitor gone bad. Sometimes electrolytic capacitors become swollen and that is a sure sign of a bad capacitor. Otherwise you must measure the capacitor to know if it is bad or not. I have a capacitance meter and an ESR-meter for checking capacitors. Often you must desolder the cap to get a correct reading.

  • @dphoenix1

    Oh I know that feeling. Upon purchase of my 92 740, the only gauge on the cluster that worked properly was the tach. The speedo was particularly bad, spazzing all over the place constantly (and I think mine has the VDO gauges, so I’d say they all have issues).
    Is there nobody in Germany that offers cluster repair? There’s a place down the road from me here in the US that repaired everything for a flat fee… not cheap, I wanna say about $200, but it sure was nice to get it back and everything worked perfectly.

    The smacking of the dash is a daily ritual every time I drive my 745t 😂 My fuel & temp gauge stick plus my tach jumps around. I have a very nice low mileage cluster out of my wrecked 744t that I salvaged from it before I sent it to redblock heaven that I might install eventually.

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  Před 2 lety

      What causes that again? Someone with a 740 told me they have the same problem, their fuel and temp gauge needs a tap. I have the same issue on the 240 speedo

    • @redblockgarage
      @redblockgarage Před 2 lety +1

      @@Involvod not sure but my 745t sat for 15 years with the sunroof partially open before I saved it so I'm sure that didn't help. It was worse but I took my cluster out and tightened up all the screws on the back of it since most of them are part of the circuit. It definitely helped and the cluster functions much better now.

    What's the fun in DIY repairs without the old roller-coaster of emotions, eh? At least you've got got it working properly again. +5 K's on the speedo feels about right for a stock-ish setting.
    Manufacturers are actually mandated to let the speedo read a bit high to allow the owners some wiggle room with wheel & tire combinations without having the speedo read too low.

    The Turbo and non turbo cars have different rear axle ratios, I believe. That's reason why the speedo isn't showing the correct speed.

    • @huissi3441
      @huissi3441 Před 2 lety +1

      Rear axle ratio doesn't matter, the wheels are always rotating the same speed no matter what ratio there are. Only the wheel diameter affects on speedometer.

      @@Involvod I am shure you can do this. I’m to far from you. Just desolder the two blue wires from the micro switch. Get a good solder puller. Put the solder iron on the cap coenction until it gets loose. Remember that is a doble board. This means that is solder at top and the bottom at the same time. Put a lot of heat and move the cap until it comes loose. Don’t pull it hard you can damage the board. After they are out use the solder puller to clean the holes. These capacitors have a positive and a negative. Install them correctly or the will boow up (ask me how i know). It sounds bad but really is easy. Practice on some other board. A TV board or another.
      Best of luck!
