- Engine mount replacement on my 1988 Volvo 240 to help with the rough and shaky engine. I originally planned to use stronger mounts but wasn't able to get them.

This was a very good look at the job, close-up. And all 240s need engine mounts, especially the one on the right, under the oil filter.

I've not yet seen a 240 that doesn't need them! I think they must be a bit wobbly even from new!
Your creative holding fixture for the motor mount elicited quite a laugh from me!
On a 140 series, the mounts lack the peg that keeps them from spinning which makes removal and installing fun.
I did sorta cringe when you looked up through the engine compartment to address the camera and you didn't have a pair of safety glasses on.
As someone who has in the past had to have metal and plastic removed from his eyes due to similar actions I'd say glasses are much preferred to having one's eyes worked on. :) They don't need to be pricy, just some 3M Virtua's or SecureFit's will do.

Proper job on the mounts, it makes a huge difference. Yes, a new transmission mount should help get rid of the rest of that slop. Luckily the trans mount is a much easier job.

Man your videos bring back a lot of memories of working on my 91 245. Fortunately my 242 has all new mounts but struggling with old squished mounts is a lot of fun.

Good job. When you revved the engine and the thrust to the side before you fitted the new mounts, reminded me many years ago, when my mate and I forgot to attach the small wire rope at the front of a 1948 2.5 litre Riley. Massive long stroke and the wire held the engine from what seemed at the time , trying to do a somersault when revved . Lol. I notice on my 1970’s Mercedes they have a small shock absorber on the opposite side of the block to absorb the thrust.
So much easier on a car without aircon. On 240s with it, the driver's side mount is a nightmare. I almost always unbolt the bottom bracket from the crossmember and then unbolt the top one from the block. Then, change the whole mount outside of the engine compartment.
I also always do the passenger's (exhaust) side on the 240s whilst doing an oil change. Makes it much easier.
Pro tip: put a piece of aluminum foil or a rag over the passenger's (exhaust) side mount when you change the oil, to minimize spillage on the mount (which can accelerate its wear).

Saw a vid on testing those axle stands on here with hydraulic press and they were much better than I expected, failed at something like 8,000kg! Always a good idea putting wheels under chassis just in case. It did look like the engine was trying to escape the engine bay when you started it at the beginning.
I saw that video too! Never would have thought it, but then with the straight tube to the ground I guess it makes sense, I feel like the danger with these stands is them going sideways, the other type are surely better for that. Not that you should have much diagonal force on them of course 😅
@@Involvod I know what you mean about sideways, that's why I agree about putting the wheels under chassis rails as a precaution, better to be safe than sorry. Ramps are good but there is danger in getting the vehicle up on them! I borrowed a great pair of ramps from work years ago that were almost flat to drive on then you wind them up like a jack. Nice to see the Volvos getting a little better each vid.

As far as I see nothing changed after reassemble mounts. But new parts always better than old ones. So fair changes ;)

I did the same job last year on my 745. A couple of days ago I changed the little fuel pump in the gas tank.
It had stop working and I guess 34 years of pumpin fuel is good enough. The pump cost me 370 SEK, a fair price I think. Got it from Mekster.
Nice, that's the thing now with the age of these cars anything can fail after a long life, still surprising how long the original parts last!
I removed the oilfilter, but even though the bolt at the bottom drove me crazy 😵💫

Great work! The engine mounts on these are not my favorite. Seemingly every 240 I get has horrible engine mounts too!

As someone who's done mounts on fwd and rwd, might be the worst thing to install on a car. Especially if you gotta do it on the ground. On the upside, red transmission mounts are stupid easy.
That's true, I've done a few front wheel drive that were alot harder to line up. And thanks that gives me confidence for the trans mount gonna get it on soon
