BOSS: Super Overdrive 40th Anniversary SD-1 4A

- There is only one BOSS. There is only one BOSS Super Overdrive SD-1. It has barely changed in the 40 years it has been on the market and this year BOSS are celebrating the SD-1's 40th Anniversary with a commemorative release in good old basic rock 'n' roll black. Yellow graphics, of course. The SD-1 sounds just as good as it did when I first tried one in 1981. It can do a great boost, low and medium gain overdrive and will probably outlast you and I. Happy Anniversary to BOSS and the mighty SD-1.

I picked up SD-1 4A. I love it. For me, through my fender amp…it works great. Through my Marshall it works great. Why spend crazy money on that boutique pedal. When the super overdrive does it all-ish.
It's the perfect boost for most situations, particuarly to boost 2203/2204 Marshall circuit amps......gives that 'Modified '80's' tone 🤘
Great video Brett. So good to see you back to your regular self. Gave us a bit of a worry. Hope your family is well.
Thanks, Tony. I'm better but still not completely out of the woods. Soon, I hope! Cheers.
I bought this today....fu..king love it !!!!
I am missing an SD-1 on my pedal board. Now, I am probably missing a black anniversary SD-1.
Thanks for your great gear demos, Brett! I am regularly returning to your videos on the SV20H. The sound is great, and so is your joy when playing that amp.
Edit: Now I've pre-ordered a black SD-1.
It's the od I always keep coming back to, permanently on my pedal board.
My first pedals were the Big Muff, Boss OD-1 and Boss Phaser PH-1. No one made pedals like Boss... indestructible, great sound and easy to use. They were the benchmark.
Great to see the SD1 getting some love on "the tube" 🤘😎
Awesome demo. Nice to hear some great blues style samples
Great Demo and very awesome sound!!! I love this pedal and will buy it soon!👏👏👏🔥🤟🔥🤟
This was quick on the draw Brett! Only just got the email from BOSS. 40 years goes by mighty quick, I remember this
Great tones and chops!
As a longtime SD1 user, this was a great review. Beginners take note!
Can't believe it... i just colored my sd1 black years ago. now I have to buy this one
An excellent review! Thank you
I watched and learned for this great musician many times.
Great video , Thank you very much for sharing your settings , these pedals ( and also the BD2 and DS-1 ) are great tone tools and a more important... a lot of fun 😁 , great playing 😃👍
Wow, that sounds fantastic - can’t believe I’ve never tried one!
I have a mid 80s one. Still going strong.
If this video doesn’t sell a ton of these pedals then... superb demonstration Brett!
My favourite Boss Pedal.
Waiting for it to hit the stores. It's still my number one. [Edit ~ Bought]
Same, I check zzounds daily to see when it’ll become available. Anyone have a release date?
Any feedback? Is it any different from the Taiwanese?
Mine from the late 90 died a few month ago, I guess that's the perfect timing to get one of these 😁😁
You can never go wrong with any Boss Overdrive or distortion pedals. They can cover any hard, mellow, or subtle dirt required for any genre of music. This SD 1 pedal looks great with the black paint job. I would love to get one.
Great pedal. Great demo.
Amazing 🔥❤️❤️
Greatest cheap pedal ever! I bought a tube screamer and sold it again as I prefer the SD-1.
Great overdrive sound 👍
This black SD-1 sounds way better than the stock yellow one.
Only guitar players have a keen enough ear to hear the difference in paint color. 😀
It has a darker tone with a hint of higher price tag :)
Tone paint.
After owning Pro Co Rats, Xotic overdrives and more etc, i was a bit of a snob when it came to Boss Pedals for drive, however i purchased a JCM800 this year and after hearing how well these sound through a JCM i have decided to purchase this 40th anniversary SD-1. After visiting videos of people using these through marshalls i think its safe to say i will be a very happy boy when this arrives in the post, fingers crossed these become collectors items as well.
I’m hoping these become collectors
Man those Boss pedals never ever disappoint do they ? But as I always say Brett could plug into a toaster and sound great ! Cheers M8T!
My favorite...into a hot amp....nothing beats it.
My favorite od pedal. Solid and reliable.
Ha! I own a beautiful 1983 SD-1 I found in a pawn shop dirt cheap and it’s as good as it gets. I also have a 2007 model. The black is only for collectors, just like the DS-1, which I bought and never used! The MT-2 is a pedal I don’t like and wouldn’t take for free.
I CAN see you, Brett, having the SD-1 on your pedal board all the time...... But hot damn, if you packed in that MT-2 for a gig with James Reyne, there'd be some serious WTF stares from the stage!
I was bummed when I decided to not buy the DS-1 40th anniversary edition, and then I wanted one after the fact but prices for resellers went nuts. I just pre-ordered this (or back ordered) no regrets this time!
Those Marshalls sound mighty delicious without and especially with that overdrive - lovely.
Do you do anything special to avoid overloading the Axe input with drive pedals?
When I'm not using one of my Maxon OD 8 or 9 series overdrives for a bit of extra drive set low and the volume running full out, tone set to taste then more often than not I'll be using one of my trusty Boss Super Overdrives, I like them for a providing a smoother low gain drive/boost the same way I use pretty much any of my overdrives. I include the MXR CAE MC-402 in that type of smoother Super Overdrive style also. Obviously, I have far too many than is healthy let alone to list out in regards to boost and overdrive pedals, however, those are my main two types which are 100% reliable. I'll have to grab one of these 40th-anniversary editions as well as one of the 30th-anniversary edition MT-2 Metal Zone models, now when we are talking about the area of high-gain distortion pedals that is even more just obscene! It'd take me an ungodly amount of time to try to list each one and the comment would just be the length of an essay Brett fella. I picked up the Waza craft editions of both the Super Overdrive and Metal Zone, so these anniversary editions just make sense to also grab plus any excuse right? haha, I fully agree with you about the Metal Zone being a good pedal but also one that can be abused and really got a bad reputation due to far too many players abusing the ability to cut/scoop out the mid-range, to the point that they remove all of the essential mid-range a good guitar sound consists of, used in a more sensible manner though they are very capable, with the gain pulled right down the MT-2 can be used as boost with far more sound sculpting on tap than any typical overdrive or boost offers.
Two great pedals that you have as usual done a fine job of demonstrating Brett, hope you are well/life is treating you well along with your family and loved ones mate on behalf of me and mine, the same sentiments go to everyone else too, cheers!

Best pedal ever.
Hello Brett. Did you get a chance to open it up and see if its the THD PCB or the SMT? Regards
I have the first month February 1981 silver screw 0300. It has the thumb cut box. 😀
Which amp to play at home would you recommend to enjoy this pedal
Hi Brett, How do you like the Charvel HH? They seem to be good guitars for the money.
Brett which pickers do you use?
Marshall + Boss is great
Get two. Then you, too, can get close to Criss Oliva and Gary Holt tones. Criss used his in front of a "clean" (I'm sure there was likely a little breakup, but not much) Marshall, then use both with some gain, with the first one set to tone all the way down, and second tone all the way up. Or you can place them in front of a Hiwatt and get that Bonded by Blood Exodus tone.
Hard to beat the metal zone waza craft. But that super overdrive.... oh my god.
Is there much difference in tone between this and the regular version? or just cosmetics?
Just cosmetics as far I know.
@@BrettKingman Can confirm. Just cosmetics. I have and love a reg SD1 I picked up earlier this year. Just yesterday I got the 40th ann version and the difference is purely cosmetic, +- variations in potentiometers and what not.
my desert island pedal
Have you opened those pedals up? After 2016 they stopped using the old style boards
Still waiting on the Sound Parcel to ship mine. 😔
Order mine about 2 months ago.
I used to use sd1+mt2 together, it was excellent, but everything without exaggeration.
Overdrives......what spectrum of mid boost do you like?
Me....I play p90s....can I get an overdrive with out a major mid boost?
Nice demo. I've never been able to make mine sound that good :)
Would love to hear a side by side comparison with the original.
I'm not sure if it's the guitar or just you but this one seems to sound fuller than mine.
Sd1 into hot amp
@@Albesiastv Yep, a classic combination.
Though when I said I've never been able to make mine sound that good I was referring more to the player than the equipment 🙃
Is this made of SMD ?
SD-1ええなぁ。
買うっきゃ無いな。
I wonder what’s inside, is it micro components or the good old bigger stuff that you can mod
micro, its just as good if you want it bone stock 😄
@@jerryyeaaah15 dam that sucks, I thought they would make it like the original, so your just paying extra for paint!
@@ihaveaproblem3153 It's that attitude that will make it rare and collectible
@@ihaveaproblem3153 but surely they will hold their value better and they‘re not like 200bucks or sth 😂
@@jerryyeaaah15 I didn’t even look at the price, I see now that’s it’s just $1 more then the yellow one
いよいよ来週発売ですよ❣️🎛🍻✨
Have these been released yet? They're impossible to find in stock!
August, Buddy. The HM-2 should be hitting either in August or afterwards according to Sweetwater.
I want black sd1
Was it only mine but I have the orig. OD 1 (that still works) problem with it is it has a severe bottom end roll off for some reason?
That’s the design, they roll off a lot of bass like Tubescreamer or Rat. The bass roll off is part of the reason they sound good overdriving a loud Marshall which tend to get a little bloated or mushy sounding when turned up loud, the SD-1 tightens it up by cutting some of the bass.
SD-1 4A: Where and When is this going to be available?
Its available for preorder right now, just got inline for mine
@@chr15tree Yep, i guess they were embargoed until midnight or something. I pre-ordered this morning. Thanks. I feel a bit silly, though. I'm probably only buying it because it's black.... If they had just slapped a "40th Anniversary" sticker on the old case color, i'd be all, "Meh."
Hello Brett! Can you please, open it and check? Is the circuit made of surface mount components or classical through hole style? Thanks !
Through hole.
Actually, kind of a mixture between both. If you check out stinkfoot.se/archives/3203 and take a look at the Blues Driver pics, it's almost identical to the pic on the left with the two smaller green boards. /
Seymour Duncan make a super distortion pickup!?
How about through a Vox AC15
Good for Van Halen?
Are these made in Japan or in Taiwan ?
Malaysia
Still Made in Taiwan or Japan? Thank you.
Is this stock or a waza? Thanks
I have a SD1 with a Monte Allums component upgrade mod and symmetrical/asymmetrical distortion switch. It has never left my board, and never will...
Penicillin?
That is Phatter than Clive Palmer
Must have 3 Boss pedals: SD-1 & DS-1 & BD-2
OD-3 nicely thickens single coils.
These pedals were made for Marshalls
Is the SD-1 40A made in China? Taiwan? Japan?
Malaysia. Does it matter?
I hate this pre-order crap they're talking another two or three months before it's even available why not just wait until it's done and then announce it
black = yellow same sound
Good for Van Halen tone?
So pretty much an SD-1 in a black case? Hmm. I think I will stick to the old SD-1 and continue to have them modded. :)
I hate reissues and the price tag that comes with it.
@@notmyrealhandle Just bought a Zoom G1 Four for $20 more than that, and it has perfect recreations of all of those Classics.
After telling myself I didn’t need the SY-1 Synthesizer (I do).... I see this video... 😐
Paint it black, gouge the price. You guys are suckers.
