Are vintage pedals better than modern ones? What does "better" even mean?
Let's compare the good old original OD-1 with its successors: the SD-1 and the OD-1X. Did Boss make a mistake discontinuing the OD-1 overdrive?

    ** Why the ANZEIGE (=Ad) message? **
According to german laws everyone has to mark their videos as advertisements as soon as there's a single "subject relevant" product, tag or link in it. Even if you didn't get paid for making that video. Sounds confusing and it really doesn't help the viewer to see which is a paid review and which isn't.

The OD-1X really shines with an amp that’s on the edge of breakup, at live volume. The clarity and note separation is amazing. Into a clean amp it’s a bit sterile IMO. It is an overdrive after all. Really underrated pedal. I love it.

  • @User-jk8wq
    @User-jk8wq Před 2 dny

The OD-1X is definitely a more transparent overdrive and has a lot more bass and upper treble than the other two. I think if you're going to use a pedal to get all your gain and run the amp clean then the OD-1X is the best choice, but if you want to use the pedal to boost an already overdriven amp then the boosted midrange you get from the OD-1 and SD-1 is a fantastic bonus for helping your lead parts punch through the mix. I use my 1988 OD-1 all the time and for some reason, no matter what amp I run it into, it always seems to work a treat! Even without a tone knob it always sounds awesome

The contrast of hearing a pedal in a mix was a great idea for this.
OD-1 is a classic and sounded the best to me (in a mix), but I think there are plenty of quality drives out there.
Im sure this move will elevate the value of the older units.

In general MIJ Boss sound smoother , mix very well in the mix, while MIT mat create perception for fuller sound but when in the mix is where you see the problem. In the mix they sound harsh and more unpleasant. MIJ have better harmonics , mix great . OD-1 excels if you need more drive and sustain. Sounds smoother than the SD-1 in those situations. I had a lot of BOSS pedals ... even MIJ some are superior and if you come by one of those they are absolutely untouchable by MIT or any newer versions of BOSS

Nice comparison, very good playing too! I just got an OD 1X lol. I have the original OD-1, Used an old SD1 and BD-2 (for many years) and i didn't really expect it to sound like an OD-1. I also think, if Boss made a new pedal that sounds close to the original OD-1, it wouldn't make sense. Ok, i wouldn't go into that argument which pedal sounds "best". The OD-1 is just a beast plugged into a good amp, has that midrange that sounds full (the harmonics is just so good) and "analogy" and feels good playing through, even with different guitars (strat, tele, LP etc..) each has it's own tonal characteristics, as you would never get an SD-1 to sound exactly the same as an OD1, especially the OD-1X lol. Kris really explains (and demoed) each pedal very well, and i must say his playing is exceptional! Knowing Boss as being an "Innovator", they always make and develop new models of pedals, and you always have the choice to choose which one suits your playing, styles, taste etc. In my personal opinion, I'd rahter have 'em all and have the luxury to choose which pedal/s I'd step on 😁. Great video. Cheers!

Great 'n revealing comparison, well done!
The SD-1 does have this slight fuzziness to it ... made me try - and buy - the SD-1w, which does sound less fuzzy and more open (in the waza-setting). Great little box with a hefty price tag ... but worth it.
I was surprised how well the OD-1x did: no fuzziness and can be placed well in the mix by its tone controls!
I wouldn't focus on the naming too much ...

Paul.

  • @Mister_Greg
    @Mister_Greg Před 2 lety +2

A few things to demystify the OD-1:
    - The difference between the OD-1 and the SD-1 lies in the coupling cap before the drive stage (more about that later) and the tone circuit isn’t present. The OD-1 has a low pass filter at 880Hz, which the SD-1 also has but it’s implemented differently. Converting an SD-1 into an OD-1 is trivial.
    - The difference between the quad op-amp OD-1 and the dual op-amp OD-1 has a lot more to do with the coupling cap than the op-amp chip. If you like that this particular OD-1 is tighter than the SD-1 you won’t like the original OD-1 as much. It has a full bass response.
    - The drive/clipping stage between both versions the OD-1 and the SD-1 is identical. The dual op-amp version of the OD-1 and SD-1 use the same chip. Considering that the clipping arises from diodes in the feedback loop the actual chip used makes less of a difference. What’s left is that the remaining op amps are used for input and output buffers instead of discrete transistors that the vast majority of Boss pedals use. Ideally, either should be sonically transparent. In practice this is more or less the case assuming typical loads.

Right off the bat, from the initial comparison to the band mix comparison, for me it's OD-1 < SD-1 < OD-1X. I am not generally a fan of digital overdrive, but Boss really nailed it with their MDP technology. The OD-1X and BB-1X Bass Driver sound great. The progression from OD-1 to SD-1 to OD-1X is a progression of increasingly higher fidelity, and it's not a small step each time. Of course, I've never liked mid-hump overdrives. What this video did was remind me that I really need to get an OD-1X. :D The BB-1X is on my bass pedalboard, already, along with the BC-1X Bass Comp.

The OD-1X sounds awesome, but so does the SD-1. I prefer the 3 knob layout of the SD-1. And for the price, the SD-1 is a no brainer. I use the SD-1 everyday.

Nice video as always Kris. I rely heavily on my SD-1 together with BD-2. I use BD-2 as my 'always on pedal' with medium amount of gain and kick in the SD-1 as a booster when I want more mids and treble plus a little bit more gain.

Boss discontinuing effects (or "updating" by completely changing the circuit) is really tilting. Why would they discontinue the OC-2 and the FZ-2 when they could just keep it side by side with the newer model, like they do with DD-3 for example.

just bought the OD-1X back: I was lucky to get a DA-2 used: GREAT!
theyre both DIGI, but with my analog peds like Mad Prof Simble they (correctly set) just bring DYNAMIC LOVELINESS to the tone!
the LOW n HIGH controls make it soo adjustable, Ive had tube screamer-type pedals, and they just eat up the LOWS first hand!:
I dont want a pedal with an EQ I dont like: I do have my ZOOM G2 wonderfulEQ, and a Fender Engager Boost(very good quick EQ),
but to buy a pedal knowing you have to tweak its EQ is SILLY! ... I do understand this with heavy gain peds...I tame my hi gain setting from the Zoom with a Behringer V-tone amp modeler( or with the EHX Silencer: a great noise gate one the Silencer!)
summa summarum: tube screamers: Ive had Demon, T-Rex Diva, TC El MojoMojo...,
the BOSS OD-1X is a luxury liner! ( its kinda funny that my 4 Boss peds are all Yellowish: 2 OD-3s( my BIG JAZZ ped), the OD-1X(tube scream deluxe) and the DA-2( my Hill Street Blues one..),
funny their colour: theyre really not lightweight, but really thought out ones!
( I used to have the Nobels ODEAR-1 BC for Jazz, but the BOSS OD-3 is soo there: simple and perfect!!😎
I just saw an ad someone selling an amp: Fender Jazz King, omg, and I dont have the money...Ha!
I hope someone (s) design a JAZZ pedal, Ive been thru a whole lotta "Dumble" peds, the Mad Prof Simble is stuck with me!
ETHOS, GLADIO,....I love FET: BOSS OD-3, DOD/Shoe Looking Glass,

glad to hear someone digs the X, its digi but with MY Mad Prof Simble( analog) its really not too harsh or anything!!!AND people have digital reverbs and delays and kinda fool themselves being analogue or tuby ampwise..., I stumbled to the OD1X from a used BossDA , which Ill keep as well...I like sometimes darkish jazzy tones from my strat neck pup, so the X brings slight brightness( and thickness!) to the tone! and my always on pedal is the ZOOM G2 which has digital reverb/echo even in my basic clean tone, so there..., luv K : )

Why can nobody in a pedal demo allow a single note to sustain for a little while, so we can actually hear the tone of the distortion? It's always "play as many notes as possible", and "only sustain on that big chord at the end of the wankery...."

I've owned an OD-1 and my opinion is, it sounds like crap - I don't see how anyone would pay big money for this rubbish hyped up pedal.
I also feel using a Strat with single coils via this compressed CZcams App, does nothing to make the pedal do what it is supposed to do therefore, the only true way of finding the tone of a pedal is by a guitar with humbuckers and then if you have to, use a Strat.
