Can a PEDAL Sound Like a DUMBLE? | Cornerstone Gladio | Gear Corner

How close can you get to the real Dumble overdrive sound with a pedal? And does it even matter how close you get to it? To me what counts most, is that this little box of joy gives me a sweet and chewy tone on Channel I and a super cool, midrangy tone on Channel II.
Enjoy Gear Corner!

** Why the "Includes paid promotion" message? **
According to german laws everyone has to mark their videos as advertisements as soon as there's a single "subject relevant" product, tag or link in it. Even if you didn't get paid for making that video. Sounds confusing and it really doesn't help the viewer to see which is a paid review and which isn't.
--- The line of truth: Is this actually a paid review? Cornerstone sent me the pedal for the demo, so technically yes, it's a paid review. (I update this line for every video).

I own the Gladio SC and it’s awesome. The other OD I own on neck pick up get a little bit muddy. The gladio it’s always clear and full. Awesome video Chris, as always! 👏🏻
It’s a terrific pedal and that’s why I just ordered one. 🔥
I plan on building a small board around this pedal for a quick grab and go package.
Great video and tones too!
Best! ✌🏼
As always, great demo.
You got a wide variety of tones out of that little box, however I'm guessing it was a lot more impressive in the room. Even with headphones, I was thinking you can get close enough for rock n roll with cheaper alternatives. However this does have the ability to cover the gamut of tones you'd get from multiple pedals, so there is that.
Anyway, thanks for the video, Kris.
hey Chris, again, excellent playing and totally comprehensible sound settings and comparisons. TBH I don't hear a difference in quality fx loop vs. frontend. The combination of a dumble soundalike pedal with a more spikey drive is a winner. I do this with a zen drive and an OCD as a low gain boost in front of it. Similar sounds, same price but way less cool looking and features...
Awesome playing great Sounding Pedal 👍
The sound is good but I am more fascinated with the knobs they look great
But they're just knobs, what if it sounded shitty?
Wow that sounds amazing, pretty unique and has THE tone! mind you.... your playing helps, cheers Kris!
Cheers Derek, much appreciated! 🤟
Love the look , it reminds me of my phase linear quad sound pre-amp 🤘🏽. So many options for awesome tones in that lil box 👍🏽
It looks like… it’s built to last forever. 😅
@@KrisBarocsi and so shiny!
sounds great ... nice playing !
Thanks a lot Allen! 🙌
Great tone great playing.
Sounds great!
Very cool, Kris!!
Cheers Mark, I really appreciate it!
Really cool sounding pedal.
Your playing is amazing.
Nice video BUT i would have appreciated your expert impression of what you prefered ? … gladio in front or direct plugged in the power amp ?!
Bro!!! Excellent playing.. oh and the pedal is nice too! Really the Klon is just overrated in my opinion so idc there. Looking forward to the head to head. This is an awesome sounding pedal.
excellent !!!
thank u Kris
You really aren’t helping my Tele Gas!! 🤣 nice playing 🤟🏻
I’m always here to help. Oh wait… 😅 Thanks a lot!
When I think of a Dumble what comes to mind is Robben Ford & The Blue line. If it doesn't sound like that or Larry Carlton, I think it's something else. This is a great sounding pedal, no matter what it's trying to simulate.
Ehy Stan, you're totally right... Indeed, the Gladio is meant to simulate Robben Ford's sound, rather than being just a generic "Dumble in a box"...
Also, consider the fact that all sound is a tone. That tone may not be something you grew up idolizing but it doesn't mean that it's not amazing in and of itself. I think so many guitar players are in search of the past instead of carving out the future with new tones. Everybody wants a less Paul and a marshall or a Strat and Fender. Or any other pair like that and that will always keep things sounding the same. I just keep thinking to myself that there was a time when Leslie West and Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton didn't know anything about those amps and guitar combinations and they just had to figure it out and carve out the tones. Anyway that's my two bits.
👍😎🎸🍺
...good 2 bits !
I think there's a mini switch inside the pedal that messes with the channel 2 🤔
...back and forth between v.1 and v.2 I believe?
This vs a Vrtex SSS as a clean dumble sound that you plug the rest of your pedals into... which would be the better clean platform?
I dont know, if pedal can sound like Dumble. But I know, I dearly looove my Wampler Euphoria (wanted Pantheon for long time, but went with Euphoria and Im not looking back in regret).
That’s the spirit! Get inspired and don’t look back! 🙌
With the Duellist you also can go into fuzz area ;-)
Good to know that. I had one here for a few days for some reasons 😉 and I couldn’t get a fuzzy tone out of it. I obviously didn’t crank the gain enough. Haha
IF A GtR PED HAS A JAZZ OPTION, I would switch to it before using electricity..., sorry, just saw an ad by someone selling a Fender Jazz King amp! that would be soo cool: yeah I play strats( Yamaha Pacifica 112V superstrats...), yeah alright do you have an amp? Oh yeah, my favourite is the Fender Jazz King...!🎸
I've found my cheap Joyo R-02 Tai Chi pedal (Zendrive clone) works great through the return jack, bypassing my amps preamp section. Wide freq response and low-noise. Acts just like the amp's preamp section in regards to taking other pedals that proceed it.
How the pedal compared o zendrive?
I have a Gladio and it is something else. Love it into a Cali76 stacked. I run my left side with almsot no gain and the rigth with slightly more than almost no gain.
The one thing this video is missing is how well the Gladio stacks behind other pedals. The "preamp" label is more about how it will make anything you run out in front of it sound amazing too. The Gladio really is a foundational tone platform that you can then use to get all your basic sounds out of and then hit with OD and fuzz just like a "real" amp.
Sounds like a killer setup. Have you ever tried using the Cali76 as a boost in front of your pedals? It’s how I use it, as both typical compressor and also as boost for gain pedals.
@@BellTunnel I haven't. I normally leave it on all the time to even out my bad fingerstyle-induced string volume mismatch issues. The Cali (especially the stacked version) lets me also control dirt levels with guitar volume without worrying as much about the loudness mismatch. I frequently need more dirt, but I don't always need way more stage volume. But I usually just leave that one on all the time. I now have a Page TS running before the Cali, so my setup is Austone OD > Gladio > PAge > Cali76. I have essentially 5 levels of "base gain" with ultra clean being just the Cali, then Cali + Page, then Cali + page + Gladio left side as the "dirt rhythm". For lead kick in the Austone OR switch gladio sides. Or both.
The thing about both the Gladio and the Page is they make everything else in front of them sound better. The Page actually has a lot of sonic oerlap with the Cali even though it's not technically a compressor.
So with the TRS-conection you can use it like the Truetone Jekyll & Hide? 2 Pedals, one box.
By the way: You should check the very unique Cold-Fusion Modus from the Two Notes Le Clean. I played several month's only with A/B. Today I was in Experimentmodus and fell in love again with the Cold-Fusion. With the right settings it reacts very sensible too dynamics and my tc Spark Mini.
I give you my sister in exchange for pedal. She scream a lot, but you have noise surpressor. If she get too loud, you can kick her on or off. Sometime she need many kicks..
the question is which dumble? they're all different. jetter is more specific with his boxes.
Cornerstone is also pretty specific. Left side is designed to give the Robben Ford Cannonball tone and the right side the Sonny Landreth kind of Dumble tone. 🤷♂️ All I know both sides sound very interesting and inspiring. Cheers
@@KrisBarocsi cool. does it come with some chops? i can't play like either of those guys. it is a nice box.
@@mikeblue385 haha, me neither. That’s why I didn’t even talk about that in the video. I can only play like me, so I figured I‘ll just do that instead. 😅
“Pedals can’t sound like amps”, Dumbledore said calmly.
Absolutely agree 👍🏼
@@cornerstonegear That Dumbledore knows his stuff …
Maybe not,...
But my Hiwatt DR 504 OL loves it.
It makes an absolute beautiful tone.
Pretty much everywhere.
@@Steven-re3tx Doesn’t really imply that the pedal necessarily sounds like the amp. Just means it sound nice in a different way or you could have done with the amp alone, I presume….
I hate pedals like these. They sound sooo amazing and I want them all to be my friends and move in with me. But they're sooo expensiveee! Duellist, Gladio, KoT ... ugh
The kot is not that expensive if you’re willing to wait for 3+ years
@@sidewinderb2669 Yep. I'm on the list since Nov 2017. So I guess I was willing to wait. If you ask me now ... not so much any more.
@@fraenkiboii Then it’s soon your turn. They are building the September 2017 orders right now, so… It’s true, the KoT is way cheaper than most of these other fine drive pedals. 🤷♂️
@@KrisBarocsi yep. Covid really destroyed all my statistics and estimations on when I'll be on top of the wait list. I've got a spreadsheet with graphs and formulas for estimations. Covid basically added another YEAR to the waitlist. Currently, you have to wait 1394 days or 3.819 years
Grab a Joyo R-02 Tai Chi pedal, or a Caline CP-502 Mellow Drive. Both are Zendrive clones. Dirt cheap, low-noise, great tone, and both work through the FX return just like Kris is doing here.
I'm 39 and still feel too young to chase after these senior citizen and cork sniffer guitar tones. Maybe when I'm 85.
What does that mean exactly?
Ciao ragazzo, come stai? Hi man, how are you? 😃
Ciao Maurizio, sto bene, grazie! E tu?
That’s literally all I know in Italian. 😅
That’s a shame though, since my grand grand grand grand grand grand grand father was Federico Barocci, the renaissance painter (we traced back the family tree and we‘re 80% sure about it). 😅
@@KrisBarocsi Your grandfather was an important person then. Then you are Italo Italo Italo / Tedesco 😃
@@maurizioleonardosolfietti5499 🤗
For "Dumble", I'd like to try the Nux Steel Singer, which claims no "pre-amp" status, but has a lot of fans. In fact, it keeps selling out ... so something my good about it.
Maybe borrow one for your comparo from Thomann ?
I picked one of those up. It sounded nearly identical to my tube screamers and NOTHING like my dumble pedals. NUX basically jumped on the 'dumble' bandwagon with that pedal, trying to sell it as something it's not. Also, the components in them are utter shite. Really cheap plastic pots and such.
A Joyo R-02 Tai Chi is a much better option for a cheap 'zendrive' clone. Or a Caline CP-502 Mellow Drive, if you prefer their form factor. I have one of each and both are nearly identical and behave just like Kris' pedal in this vid - works great to replace your amp's preamp section by using the FX return.
My 2 cents is it sounds great. If it works for what you need, go for it. As far as sounding like something else, don't care really.
So true. It only makes sense to try to match a certain tone, if that’s exactly what you’re after. The only thing I really care about is inspiration. 🤷♂️🙌
@@KrisBarocsi Exactly! One of my favorite tones is my Thinline clean through the Roland Jazz Chorus sim in AmpliTube. Is it exact match? Not sure, haven't played a RJC live since 1981, but I love it!
