    This channel is the reason I got my TSL. This channel is the reason why I tried and fell in love with the SD-1. I bought the basic SD-1 and loved it so much that when the 40th anni came out, I needed it just because it was a beautiful version of my fav boost. Other than cosmetics, they're identical. I won't put velcro on the 40th tho.

    • @austinfailz
      @austinfailz Před 3 lety +5

      You can wrap the base plate in something, and then stick the velcro to that. Then, if you wish to remove the velcro without screwing up the base plate, you're golden.

      Same here! I had wanted a DSL100 for probably 20 years and this channel's comparisons of the 800 and 2000 made me ask myself what I was waiting for so I finally bought one and man I wish I would have done this 15 years ago lol. I also picked up an SD-1 as I'd always known about them but had never really been shown how good they could sound until this channel.
      Thanks Euge!

    I usually learn more in five minutes watching your videos than watching ten videos by other CZcamsrs. It was useful seeing and hearing your dialing in process. I liked your Japan SD-1 and the new black one best. They sounded the most open, balanced, and tone rich. I thought the other two had more distortion and less tone. What is that first Amp your were using - Wild1, or something like that? I thought the pedals sounded particularly good with it. Thanks

    The BOSS SD-1 is an awesome overdrive pedal, I love it! Really pairs amazingly with Marshalls, is versatile (from clean boost, to bluesy crunch to a kick on a saturated amp...it does everything) and is super affordable! I got my Made in Taiwan about two years ago in a music store when I was in Paris, France. Then a couple of weeks ago I got my SD-1 4A when I bought my Marshall DSL20H, because another SD-1 can always be of some use and also because the inverted colours look kickass! Great videos, love your channel!

    Hey Euge, despite being a classic I never paid attention to Sd1, but after watching your videos, hearing your aggressive tone I thought ''hey there's something about this kid''. I went to get the schematic, the TS, Maxon and the Sd1 are basically the same circuit/architecture, some small differences, component values, which gives small differences in the cutoff frequencies of the filters. But even so this boy is fantastic and has a unique personality. If you want to use a power amp pedal directly on the cab, this guy gives you a great clean tone/clean channel. I'm working on a version with a few extra controls, but I want to keep as much of the original circuit as possible because it's fantastic. And a suggestion, more out of curiosity and to see the small differences between the versions you have, is to pass a pink noise through the pedals and put a spectrum analyzer on the back, so you can visualize the frequency response of each one of them.
    Thanks for your content.👏

    Yes. That's how you do it Euge. I always back the gain down. It just doesn't sound good. I was that guy when I was younger😁 I learned from older players that too much gain on guitar doesn't set good in the mix. Especially with lower tunings. Backing off the gain allows more of the natural sounds of guitar and amp to be heard... and felt

    What an à propos video for me right now… lol. I like all 4. I agree the one on the right (MIJ) has more high end fizz. The WazaCraft seems to have a title less gain (volume). Surprisingly, to my ears, the 2 Malaysia pedals sound the best to me. I would even say that I find the 40th anniversary pedal a little brighter, and the standard one tighter. I’ve watched a lot of your videos in the last few days, and you’ve sold me: I’m going to buy an SD-1 tomorrow for my JCM 800 2203 and JCM 900 2210…

  • @austinfailz
    @austinfailz Před 3 lety +1

    Since you have four of these, you can definitely take two of them, plus one of your Marshalls, and attempt to get that Criss Oliva tone. He apparently used a "clean" Marshall (it was likely low gain, on the verge of being crunchy, but where you could pick soft and get a clean tone). The first SD-1 with some gain, probably a bit of volume past unity, and the tone all the way down. That went into the second SD-1, with the tone all the way up, and similar volume / gain settings, then into the front of the amp. He supposedly had high output pickups as well.

    • @austinfailz
      @austinfailz Před 3 lety +1

      Also, I don't have a Boss SD-1, but I have an MXR Zakk Wylde Overdrive (an SD-1 with very minor tweaks), and an MXR Custom Bad Ass Modified Overdrive (close to a Wylde, but with a 100hz knob and a bump switch, which I believe adds mids).

      @@EugeValovirta230V The main difference I noticed by looking at the schematics (and this was quite awhile ago) was that the tone knob worked at a lower frequency, which made the pedal darker than the SD-1.
      I believe there were bullseye color ways of a few of the Boss pedals Zakk used, so I am curious why he went to MXR instead. My guess is that MXR offered more money, or were willing to make minor changes like the frequency at which the tone knob adjusted the sound.
      For instance, I think the Black Label Chorus (and thus the blue, non-signature Analog Chorus) is essentially the CE-5, which Zakk used prior to switching to MXR.

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  Před 3 lety +1

      I guess MXR offered a cut of the sales and who wouldn’t want to have a signature line of pedals especially when they are pretty much the same than what the artists was using anyway 😎.

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  Před 3 lety +2

      I have a G-Lab switcher on my studio board where the pedals I’m using at a given time are connected but this worked just fine for this purpose since I don’t normally use 4 SDs in a row 😁. And Boss pedals have all buffered bypass so basically you can put them in a row as much as you want and it doesn’t really affect the sound. With true bypass pedals you’ll have an issue and that’s one of the reasons I prefer BOSS 👌😎.

    They have a buffer, so if you go through all of them, for testing, I guess you might lose some tone, dynamics or have unwanted coloring, most noticeable probably when testing the last one in the chain. You felt the most "air" on the first one, maybe just for an experiment try to change the order or go one by one without the others in the signal chain. Yeah buffer helps to keep the signal stronger so that’s why I didn’t feel the need to use my G-lab switcher on this one 😎. So in my experience it’s the opposite to your experience 😊. I’ve used them ”individually” and the results were like on the video 😊.
      Thanks! 🙏

    hi, im really confused about your SD-1s, I cant find some of them, the one with the symmetric switch sounds interesting and whats the boded one with the red scratch on it that you say is your fav?
    look forward to hear from you
    thanks again maestro !!

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  Před 2 lety

      They’re all stock. Some made in Japan, some in Taiwan & Malaysia but it’s the exact same pedal except the Waza which have the switch so it doesn’t cut as much low end. But I never use that switch ’cos I like the way the original cuts the lows and keeps any amp tight.
      Why have only one when you can have as many as you want 😎.
      The red scratch is dried blood 🤟. Or maybe it’s paint I can’t remember anymore 😎.

    Hello Euge Valovirta. First of all thank you for the work on your interresting videos (thanks to your videos I recently get a second hand JCM800 from 1986, with the fadded tolex).
    Ok, here I got a question : I never used pedal boost, and I would like to get into it. I'm interrested in the Boss SD1, but do you know the Xotic BB preamp ?
    I will watch, right now, your video "Different gain pedals on my home studio pedalboard" to search information about the boss sd 1, but if you are interrested in making a video comparing the sd1 and the xotic bb preamp (and maybe some maxons..) I would be interreted.
    bye

    Eugene, I've heard that many famous bands that the guitarist they use the boss sd1 with turning the distortion overdrive all the way down and using it as a tone-shaping pedal like almost like an EQ pedal I know that the queen of the Stone age has done this and also the band death with Chuck Schumer he did this also I don't know if you know any other bands that have done this but it's a very interesting way of using the sd1 boss I think Zach wild does this also he kind of like turns the overdrive close to zero or very very subtle and using the pedal as an EQ pedal practically as a tone shaping device if you can list them and hit me back up on the comments to tell me because I'm interested on using the pedal like in that way

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  Před rokem

      I have no idea about that. I just use it the way I use it: level almost maxed, tone around one, drive just a hair up.
      And sometiles something totally different. The knobs are there so one can turn them and dial different tones. If it sounds good, it’s good 👌.

      Ah ok 😁. Well that totally depends what a player wants. When I started I played a long time without any pedals and was totally happy until I wanted a bit more drive / gain and then I bought an overdrive. Well it was actually Boss HM-2 which is über heavy distortion and shortly after that I bought SD-1 which I still use to this day 😎. Then I wanted a bit more ”lush” clean sound so I bought a chorus pedal and then I wanted a wah sound so I bought a wah. Well you got the point 😉
