  • Watch our full review of Thrustmaster’s 488 GT3 sim racing steering wheel, a 1:1 replica of the real-world racing car’s wheel for PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
    We have tested the new device, the first Thrustmaster has sipped with its new quick release system natively, on its direct drive, PC-only T818. We wanted to see if this new product aligns with the matching wheel base.
    Of note, however, you can use an adaptor to affix the new 488 wheel to older Thrustmaster belt-driven wheel bases, including those that work on consoles.
    It’s also a budget-friendly £199.99/$249.99/€249.99, so is not positioned as a high-end wheel, but rather an accessible add-on with a cool real-world link. With that in mind, is it any good? Watch our review and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

    I ordered mine this week, as I recently ordered the T818. I'm glad to know it seems to suit the base well. I think Thrustmaster have proven with the T818 that they're not catering to the super die-hard sim racers out there in a way. There are way better options both in wheel base and wheel rims. But for someone like me, a casual but someone who wants that elevated experience when I do sim race, this stuff is right in my wheelhouse.

    • @hheheheheh6976
      @hheheheheh6976 Před 6 měsíci +4

      I agree, Thrustmaster is perfect for casual players that want to still have a good sim experience. I’m excited to get my wheel too!

    • @MrPFMneto
      @MrPFMneto Před 3 měsíci +3

      This! As much as CZcamsrs want to push it, not all players are hardcore tryhards willing to get into debt and spend 10k in simracing... Most of us are hobbyists who just want quality and affordability!

    • @johnmalcolm57866
      @johnmalcolm57866 Před 2 měsíci

      It's laughable that you think a T818 is just a decent base for casual players. People are so brainwashed nowadays thinking you need to spend thousands in order to be fast in Sim Racing and it's just ridiculous. Yea, it increases realism and the whole experience and if you can pay it, go for it for sure, but it won't necessarily make you faster. All you need is reliable FFB and some some decent pedals with load cell braking.
      Look at this. A few years ago I bought a T300 Ferrari Alcantara edition + T3PA pedals for 400€. Sold the T3PA for 90€ and bought the loadcell pedals T-LCM for 200€. My whole package cost me brand new 510€, way less than just the T818 base that costs 650 alone, and I consider myself far from a casual player. I have around 3000+ rating in iRacing which places me within the best 3-5% best drivers in the game.
      Back in 2005-2008 I was beating hotlap world records in GT Legends using a Logitech Driving Force Pro with plastic pedals that cost me 150€ back then. After that, I used a Logitech G27 for around 10 years.
      Basically, the value of everything I used in the last 20 years together that allowed me to be on top of simracing, cost less than the wheel you bought claiming it's good for a casual player. No, it's not just good, it's 5x better than a casual player needs.

    Hi guys, congratulations for the videos!! I recently got the 488 GT3 Ferrari also on your advice coming from the Thrustmaster ecosystem. I currently have a TGT2 I had to increase the strength of the steering wheel because it has a diameter of 31 but I have two problems, one with driving, that is, it is true that it is more precise but I It slows down by at least 3 tenths and pushes me off the trajectory compared to before. Do you have any advice to give me on the ideal positioning of the crown in relation to the body? according to the magnetic paddles they are too noisy where should I put the rubber parts in the package to reduce the noise? thanks if you reply

    • @Extasehase
      @Extasehase Před 6 měsíci

      I have a T818 since day 1 and the quick release is the only thing that is rock solid when attaching an old wheel to the T818. The old wheels move, the screwing part of the adapter piece is mediocre, but the QR itself is really tight. It looks and feels awkward when its opened - you look at it and think "no way this is gonna support the DD forces". But then you close the clip and you´re like "damn, that´s better than expected".
      I just got the new 488 GT3 wheel and really hope to loose a lot of the wheel flex to finally get the full performance out of the DD + quick release.

    Thanks to you gents for this video! You've LITERALLY changed the decision-making I've been struggling with over the last few weeks. All but a day ago, I had dismissed Thrustmaster's T818 from the running btw Fanatec's CSL DD & Moza's R5/9 Bundles. Coming from the TX/T3PA Pro(now using Fanantec's CSL Elite V2 Pedals) combo'd w/3 other TM Wheels, the upgrade to the T818 would be the more obvious choice for the "fanboy" of Thrustmaster, BUT with the lack of initial options with the base at launch, and ESPECIALLY the lack of the basic mounting options, without the need of addin cost for it, which made it a loosing proposition at it's price point, to value. So NOW, the inclusion of this wheel, and it's options, has brought it back into contension and put up a strong choice for me, and I'm sure for others, to look at it as a good solid purchase.

    • @deepvertigo5145
      @deepvertigo5145 Před 6 měsíci

      Do other brands offers mounting kits for free ?

    • @Cpanpyro
      @Cpanpyro Před 6 měsíci

      @@deepvertigo5145 If you are refering to Wheel Kits, the wheels of the respective manufacturer/company already include a mounting solution, when it comes to direct drive attachments. Many do offer options, for further upgrades, but the initial investment into a wheel and base is already included, IF the wheel is NOT already permanently attached to the wheel base(like older Belt/Gear Driven wheel base sets) as intended.
      (In regard to Base Units)To my knowledge, MOST other DD brand models stick to a somewhat, standardized, pre-drilled, mounting scheme, built into their unit's base, depending on the size or power output, for rigidity. For the most part, a mounting solution is offered in those outlier cases, if warranted for one. BUT, in the case of Thrustmaster, THEY chose to charge you for an additional cost. Granted, other manufacturers may have similar solutions that will charge you, BUT, it was either intended for a specific, after market situation, to resolve a mounting issue to a specific brand or maker, UNLIKE, what Thrustmaster is doing. In the case of Thrustmaster, they are forcing those already invested into the Thrustmaster ecosystem, to cough up a little more $$, to ensure a bit more return, on their investments...imo

    I have 3 thrustmaster wheels, but the T818 is (from what I heard) not the best in terms of flex inside the base/QR itself.

      As a T818 owner, I don't recommend upgrading to one if you're planning on using your old TM rims forever. The wheelbase itself is decent and I have 0 complaints with it, but the old quick release and rims just aren't built for that kind of force and will creak and flex. For people in the TM ecosystem it's a budget friendly interim solution until TM bring out new rims with the new QR you see in the vid here that you can replace your old ones with. However if you have the cash and want something rock solid right now I'd look elsewhere.

I haven't experienced flex like other CZcamsrs or reviews. Yes, the build quality is not the best, is most plastic, but it does the job very well. I had a moza r9 with the gs wheel, and the moza, obviously, is a stronger, more solid base and next gen quick release, but the base got very hot all the time. I have not experienced that in the t818 , and the thrustmaster performance is much better on ffb, in my opinion.

They need to make the molds, they need to check with providers whether they can make them the parts or not, what the PCB will do, how to make it compatible with the lowest common denominator up to the highest, how to make the lights work, the buttons, the rotary encoders, the switches and lots more.

The fact they went to the effort and cost to make this wheel backwards compatible without any additional cost to the user, is fantastic imo.
