Fun Fact: Paul McCartney was considered to play Rumpelstiltskin. I think it would’ve been interesting to see Shrek’s last villain played by one of the Beatles.
I remembered hearing that too, and wondering where the he'll he was when the film came out. Well, he at least got to be Jack Sparrow's uncle.

It seems that shrek the third was originally intended to be the last movie , but it got so much hate so they made the 4th film as away to end shrek on , not a high note , but a less sour one . I just wish we got a proper shrek 3 , cause that’s nether shrek the third or shrek forever after .
Originally, Jeffrey Katzenberg planed Shrek to be a franchise with five films, Shrek (2001), Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), Shrek Goes Fourth (2010) and Shrek Pleads the Fifth (2013). Shrek Goes Fourth would be an eco-friendly story, just like WALL•E (2008) and The Lorax (2012), while Shrek Pleads the Fifth (2013) was going to be set after the events of Shrek the Third and before the events of Shrek Goes Fourth, and the story would explore how Shrek met the swamp before the events of the first film, and the origen of Donkey would be tell in Shrek Goes Fourth or Shrek Pleads the Fifth, too. Also, a direct-to-video Puss in Boots movie was in production along with a tv series that would focus on the fairlytale creatures living in Far Far Away with King Harold after the events of Shrek (2001) and before the events of Shrek 2 (2004), showing that DreamWorks SKG wanted to make money. But, Tim Sullivan, the screenwriter of Shrek Goes Fourth, was fired, and his script was scrapped, and replaced by Josh Klausner and Darren Lemke, that wrote Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter. The decision of Jeffrey Katzenberg replace Shrek Goes Fourth, written by Tim Sullivan, by Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter, written by Josh Klausner and Darren Lemke, was because that the story that Josh and Darren wrote was better than Tim’s story. And what really made Jeffrey cancel Shrek Pleads the Fifth was because he believed that Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter was the perfect way to Shrek’s journey end and because the poor reception of Shrek the Third convinced him to end the franchise in Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter and not make a fifth movie. About the direct-to-video Puss in Boots movie, it was cancelled because of Guillermo del Toro, who cancelled this movie and replaced by the threatical 2011 Puss in Boots movie that we had. About the Shrek tv series, it was cancelled because the reception of Shrek the Third that made DrewmWorks decide to stop to transform Shrek in a cashgrab franchise. Shrek could have been today a cashgrab franchise, just like Open Season or Ice Age, if DreamWorks didn’t decided to end the franchise in the fourth film.
If there's one thing I learned, this and Toy Story 4 show that DreamWorks and Pixar have a hard time counting to four.
Tho unlike Valve, they can actually count to 3
Shrek the third is better than Shrek Forever After, that’s true.
@@juliabp6057Both films are unnecessary, Shrek and Toy story franchises are not the same
If we are going to be honest here, the Shrek franchise has always had one plot motivation to get the story rolling; Shrek is never happy with his status. In movie one, Shrek was not happy that he was not accepted , so he meets Fiona, she turns into an ogre, and they are happy together.
In movie 2, Shrek was not happy that he was going to meet Fiona's family, feared that he was not going to be accepted, changed his appearance, but then they changed back and everyone accepted them.
Now by movie 3 and 4, the whole "Shrek is never happy", thing got old because how many times does Shrek and his world need to learn to accept him for who he is? Shrek the Third was that he wasn't happy that he was going to be a dad AND that he was going to be king, so they go on this journey to get Arthur to be king and then Shrek accepts his new status as a dad.
Shrek 4 implements this idea the worst because now he isn't happy with his new life as a dad in a world that actually loves him and like said in the video, undoes everything mentioned in the first movie about how he didn't want to be seen as just the big, scary ogre. I understand the idea was to have Shrek go through a mid-life crisis and yearn for the good old days, but I feel that part was not handled well because Shrek is a total jerk to his friends and family about it. I feel the movie does start to slightly improve when Shrek FINALLY learns that he had a great life and that his decision to undo it all was a mistake, hence why the ending is what saves the movie for me. The movie finally says "SHREK YOU HAVE A GREAT LIFE NOW, STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT IT AND TRYING TO SEEK SOMETHING BETTER".
Now I DO feel Shrek 4 is underrated because yes, its story is not perfect and backtracks a lot of the progress done in the story so far, but it has some great character scenes,, and the ending is pretty good! Movie 1 and 2 are the peak of the franchise, Shrek the Third is the worst in my eyes, Shrek 4 is not perfect but does at least try, in my opinion.
I wonder how they're going to handle Shrek 5 in that case
The first 2 Shrek movies are the only good ones
The plot motivation for shrek 1 isnt that he isn’t accepted, its all the fairy tale creatures living in his swamp
Oh gosh on a musical score standpoint (and in Pixar terms) this is Toy Story 4 before Toy Story 4.
I noticed that too
One issue I have with the film is that the audience is supposed to feel sorry for Shrek losing his family but the thing is, I don't care about his family.
I like Shrek and Fiona's relationship but I've never cared for the baby ogres. They've got to be the most useless and disliked characters in the franchise. Pretty sure I'm not the only one who thinks that.
Anyways I still enjoy the movie quite a bit, even if it's not a grandiose conclusion to the series.
Shrek's kids are very annoying.
What is wrong with you guys , they are toddlers , what the hell were you expecting?
It's a great ending for the franchise. What are you talking about?

For me, the movie isn’t “bad.” It’s more blah. If it stopped existing, I don’t think I’d notice. As lame as The Third was, at least it had a continuation of the Shrek story. Here, Shrek doesn’t progress at all as a character. He has a problem made up just for this film, and all that changes is that he drops it. He doesn’t change as a person (or ogre) in any meaningful way like he does in the other three.
if you think shrek changed in the third, idk what to say.
& how is the problem made up? assuming someone can just sit down & live happily ever after is kinda dumb

Shrek 1 Love It, Shrek 2 Also Love It, Shrek 3 it's ok, Shrek 4....just ok
Damn im the only one who agrees?
At the end of the movie he goes back to the timeline where he was stressed and angry, but now hes just happy ro be back.
But that never fixed the actual problem, that he was always bothered by everyone and just wanted alone time sometimes
That was never addressed to any character
which is sad
Yeah, i've always wondered why the heck didn't Shrek just tell everyone to give him some peace? That could've easily solved everything! Smh
The true issue with the film is that they made Shrek into a weird version of himself. He claims that his life was better when the people were scared of him, even though the first two films were about him wanting to be accepted amongst everyone and he really doesn't pay attention to what's going on around him, such as not taking Fiona's cause seriously, never realizing that Rumpel would take his promise literally when freeing the ogres, and thinking his kids still exist in the other world. It's almost as if they didn't care about how they portrayed Shrek and just wanted to finish the film right away, not caring about the final result.
Have you ever married? When you are married returning to your old life is like almost impossible. And that is what shrek wants he just wants to go back to his old life for a while
Wow this is a Perfect sign u are a failure and a weak Shrek Fan. How did u miss the entirety of Shrek’s arc in this film and that the third gave him NO arc at all. Have you ever thought of what ever is actually the story that comes after the happy ending? This IS the story that comes after the happy ending, which is Shrek 2. I feel shrek in this movie is relatable. He’s gained the life he’s always wanted, but is taking it for granted. The whole point of the story is for Shrek to realize how graceful his life has truly become.
Hey guys if that's how you feel but I legitimately liked Shrek Forever After. Not perfect but still somehow feels way more like an actual third film than the ACTUAL third film.

Say what you want, RumpelShaneDawson is a great villain in my eyes. He's no Thanos or Joker, but he's fun to watch.

To be honest, I didn't even like this movie when I went to see it as a kid. I always felt like it didn't really need to exist, considering Shrek's entire character arc is about wanting to be seen as more than a "stupid, scary ogre". Here he is wishing for the worst moments of his life back?
Well, on one hand, yes it's a little out of character for Shrek. But on the other hand, that's kinda the point?
Let me explain: When someone is married to someone else, returning to your old life is like almost impossible. And that's just what Shrek wants: he just wants to go back to his old life for a while. Not forever, but just a little bit. Some time to himself.
So I don't think it's because he's ungrateful, it's more because he wanted others to give him peace.
Yeah it's definitely out of character for him. But at the same time they actually made his reasoning understandable because his friends and especially the villagers wouldn't leave him alone. Yes his friends were annoying in the other films, but in this film they were more annoying than usual and on top of that, even the villagers wouldn't leave him alone even if he was using the bathroom. If you were in his shoes, you'd probably be wanting your old life back too for a little while.
@@yogalover2753 Exactly!
It feels redundant to have the main character revert back to who they were in the beginning of their arc.
@@improbablyyourdad8458 He wasn't exactly reverting back to how he was in the beginning. He just wanted his old life back for a day and honestly in this case you can't blame him for that with how obnoxious his friends were being. Yes I get that they've been annoying before but they were more annoying than usual in this movie.
I remember liking it as a kid, and from an animation standpoint it still holds up.
But now I see it's kind of generic. Which is something I should not be thinking about when watching a Shrek or even Dreamworks movie in general.
I liked Rumblestilskin, the witches, the piper, the desolate swamp that's nothing but a desert, and even the more heartfelt moments
Plus the scene where Shrek cries on screen for the first time; but that's about it.
We should've gotten a real sequel to Shrek after the second.
Maybe they could've revitalized one of the old concepts of Shrek overthrowing the monarchy and instead runs things democratically.

Shrek 4 commits the cardinal sin of movies. Being so forgettable that you remember almost nothing from it a few hours later. All I remember to this day is the surface level drama you highlighted in the video. But it’s the same stuff you could find on a Saturday morning cartoon with the same premise. The only reason it’s perceived to be deeper than it is is because of the runtime. Unlike a Saturday morning cartoon, which is usually 20 minutes or so, this movie is over an hour, so things are stretched out. It doesn’t go deeper, it just goes wider if you know what I mean.
Burning take, Shrek forever after is better than Shrek 1. No way it could've been better than Shrek 2 but this movie isn't just a Saturday morning cartoon it is an emotional masterpiece that people hate because the previous film was hot garbage

It's a 5/10 film for me honestly, not egregious just disappointing its like critters 4
Puss N' Boots was actually an improvement from this trite.
This movie sucks, Shrek telling Fiona he wished things to go back just before he rescued her from the tower was enough for me. This aint Shrek.
Honestly I dont see how Rumpel is just Farquadd again. Farquadd has almost no presence in the first movie and isn't even really an antagonist to Shrek for most of the movie during his adventure. He's basically just there to be mocked as a surrogate for that Disney guy and never poses any real threat. Also Charming is lame as hell, his "ruined" FFA was just a few broken windows and a 3% crime increase for about 15 minutes.
It's pretty easy to call Rumpel a rip-off when you ignore all his more original traits. He's a social reject unlike Farquadd and Godmother, he has his whole deals angle, he actually takes over the kingdom. Man's also insecure about his hair, being short and insecure doesn't instantly make him Farquadd.
Not that I have any authority on this topic, but in my experience, I've seen Shek 1-3 multiple times and have only seen 4 when it first came out and still don't plan on revisiting unless someone asks to watch with me
I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who feels this way. I sometimes like to pretend this movie doesn’t exist. I agree with what the nostalgia critic said that shrek blowing up at fiona is really nasty and it’s a bit hard to like him after, that. Now granted there are times where characters say harsh things they really don’t mean, but they can make it work, this is not one of those times. Plus it’s like they didn’t even see the moon scene in the first movie. I guess I can see what they’re trying to do but it’s not executed well. I wish I hadn’t requested to see it in theatres during a school holiday. Plus looking back at it makes me a bit more skeptical about Kung Fu Panda 4 coming out next year.

The fourth is just...not great.
Debate Time!
So in this time frame of the video 20:59 to 21:04, you stated that Shrek didn’t learn a thing when he was in the alternate reality. Well that’s completely wrong, Shrek does learn something and that something is loving what he has in his life. Just like in Its A Wonderful Life Shrek(when he’s in the alternate reality)sees the true benefits of his current life, that’s why when he comes back, he has a different perspective of his life and family and feels guilty about not loving it and trying to leave it in the beginning.
8:28 but maaate, you forgot the fact that Shrek never cried in preeevious films, which is why him shedding a tear was plaaaaced there.
Yeah, it made the scene all the more heart-wrenching, because Shrek was the last character you'd expect to cry. Feel sad, yeah, but not cry.
But lo and behold, he actually does it.
Definitely Underrated! This is the best ending you can create. This ending is that good as its sequel.
At least there is no body switching
How do so many people not like this movie
This is one of those bad movies that I love. But I do have disagree that Rumple hated fairytale creatures. He was targeting Ogres for years due to their connection to Shrek. Whether it's a warped effort in trying to keep Shrek away from Fiona or misguided hatred just because Shrek is an ogre. He didn't really express any disdain towards other fairy tale creatures
I do agree the fourth movie was just blame… where the same time if people want to go back to it, thinking that it was good then just let them have their own opinions
Why’s your voice different?
Because it’s a different person.
As one of the guys from Lover of Green said in one of their CinemaSins style videos, “This movie doesn't deserve to exist. It is the most unnecessary sequel ever
conceived in Hollywood.”

I personally don’t think Shrek Forever After is bad, just alright. I can see where some people are coming from with certain criticisms like the big argument scene between Shrek and Fiona at the beginning, and it’s not nearly as funny as the first two films. But I still think it’s got a lot going for it like the darker tone, the tasteful callbacks to the first film, shrek’s arc of realising he didn’t know what he had when it came to his family and putting others before him and such, and Rumple is a pretty fun villain. Overall, I don’t think Shrek forever after is as good as the first two shreks or an underrated classic, but I think it’s still a fairly satisfying conclusion to the Shrek franchise. If this was the final chapter of Shrek we got (and we lived in the blessed timeline where Shrek the Third didn’t exist) then I feel like Forever after would’ve been remembered as those minority flawed, yet alright third sequels, like Starwars: Return of the Jedi or Kung Fu Panda 3. Not as good as the first two instalments, but a mostly satisfying conclusion to the series overall.

Why yes, I do love me some Versatile Trevor Antics.
Amen to that, @UncleKevMessick! :)
Well played, @Leaf-Razor! XD
As for you, @Flamsham: let’s put this discussion on the altar to rest once and for all! You have been nothing short of despicable - I’m not trying to be harsh on purpose, but we all need to put you and your collaborators in your place.
I am a huge Portal fan, and would love it if Valve made a third one but it’s clear that Chell’s story is over and any continuation of it would be redundant and unnecessary. The story would be less meaningful if they made a third game. It would ruin the reputation of such a beloved and esteemed brand. (similar to how those pandering, "microwavable" direct-to-DVD Disney sequels ruin the happy endings of so many cherished stories - but that's a story for ANOTHER day or perhaps a previous Media Mementos analysis? 🤔)
Same thing with VTA, It’s story is also over - and you all know very well that Trevor and Billy want to provide ONLY the best of their ability and craft. In Layman's Terms, he doesn’t want to waste your time with mediocre drivel. So many content creators (NOT naming names) engage in very scummy practices here on this site - they purposely extend their videos to an unholy duration, even when what they say could theoretically be summed up in a 5-10 min vid. They also try to use clickbait tactics to lure people in like little fish, only to have wasted their time with a cheap effort at scamming and any gullible souls will take what they say as Gospel (which in some cases, they act upon negatively and get themselves as well as their families in major trouble!). Finally, the most desperate and depraved souls decide to do harmful stuff to themselves or their animals just for clout and attention! That, dude is NOT acceptable and goes against legal regulations - the worst part about those slimy creators is the fact that to this day, no one has really called them out on their BS!
Well, me and other people with an eye for common sense are NOT going to hesitate to call out anything that we don't deem presentable because unlike you, we appreciate true artistry and hard work - which is EXACTLY what this channel has always strived for. You just don't seem to understand that you and your "Machiavellian gang" of sorts have been getting off VERY easy! If I were in Trevor's shoes, I probably would've forebade you to watch my content ever again and who knows? You might have come crawling back, after realizing that not all artists are created equal. That would have opened up your eyes to the profound impact of passion and individuality. I (in addition to the lovely folks whose comments you scrolled past) would NOT have been as merciful or tolerant, I'll have you know!
The 2 actors who got out had their careers at risk. Trevor was respecting their wishes and helping them in their time of need. Not to mention, that he wanted to give you guys BETTER CONTENT! Why would you want the random-ass mess that was VTA when you’re currently getting high-quality, well-crafted analysis from 2 very devoted people who love you guys so much, they’re willing to postpone their own creative endeavors just to please you all? They also have their own families and jobs to deal with on top of consistently releasing these things and moderating the Discord server. If you can’t respect their commitment to quality, then I’m sorry - you are simply not a real fan.
To conclude, Trevor could’ve lashed out a LOT sooner because you and other toxic users were purposely lowering his morale. He could’ve completely blowed up at you guys. He could’ve even told you guys to do things to yourselves - but he DIDN’T. Wanna know why? Because he is a Christian and the Holy Spirit has given him the power to demonstrate civility and pick his battles. Just remember that key fact before deciding to type impulsively on this comment section.
You gotta give it up and let it go. It's only for the best: czcams.com/video/8dUcACGdo2E/video.html
Thanks for listening to my TED Talk and be sure not to hit your butt on the way out! 😉
Its way better than 3 at the least
yeah
LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES BLATANT LIES! I'M SICK OF EVERYONE THINKING THIS SHOULDN'T HAVE A CULT FOLLOWING! THIS MOVIE IS SO MISUNDERSTOOD!
Sir, this is a Wendy’s.
Bruh that's because you can't handle everybody's opinions, and agreeing what your favorite reviewer says without watching the film 🙄
@@mr.darkassassin7997 no, the movie is underrated regarldess.
@@Gamegedon.900 Go outside kiddo
@@KaminoKatie first of all, the movie gets too much hate just for the realistic tone. and second, i keep getting forced outside by my parents.
I still love the movie.
still better than toy story 4!
Shut up Shrek 4 is gay crap
@@sofiadominguezleon4106what part is gay in this movie
Nope
Still much much better than shrek 3
Not really.
@@wserthmar8908 Yes really.
@@wserthmar8908 well, I can't say it's easily better than Shrek the third. Yes, it's confidently better made, but it feels less fun to brag on it
@@Insideout2Trolls3Fan350 Shrek 3 had no actual plot all of it’s just Shrek, forcing Justin Timberlake to rule something
But the first two Shrek movies are still king.
6. Shrek the Third (2007) {4.6/10}
5. Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter (2010) {5.9/10}
4. Puss in Boots (2011) {8.0/10}
3. Shrek (2001) {10/10}
2. Puss in Boots 2: The Last Wish (2022) {10/10}
1. Shrek 2 (2004) {10/10}
The first 2 movies were ok, the 3rd....probably had it's place. But this was just a cash grab
No, no , no . Cash grab fits shrek the third more , this movie was made so that the shrek franchise wouldn’t end on a sour note . That’s honestly the only good thing I can say about this film . It’s very mediocre and unoriginal.
@@bqw2094 I suppose that’s true. Sorry, I haven’t properly seen the last 2 movies
@@redrasegarden If Forever After was a cash grab, we would have had 5 a decade ago.
The Third qas a cash grab because it doubled down on the humor and merch.
You guys are hypocrites
Finally someone else understands me
Definitely a lot of people in this comment refuse to listen to the issues of this film Why don't they give it a try to watch by themselves instead agreeing what their favorite reviewers says about it?
