This movie hits so hard for me everytime. There is nothing I would fear more than what happened to Shrek. Being stuck in a world the same but also different, where nobody you love even knows who you are. Shrek learns to appreciate what he has. The ending is so perfect. I honestly don't know what people don't like about this movie.

If we just had Shrek 1, Shrek 2 and Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter, it would have been an excelent trilogy. When I was 7 years old, I thought Shrek The Third was just a bad spin-off and Shrek 1, Shrek 2 and Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter were together a trilogy.
When I was 8 years old or 9 years old and I discovered about the fact about Shrek was a Quadrilogy (Shrek 1, Shrek 2, Shrek The Third and Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter) and not a trilogy (Shrek 1, Shrek 2 and Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter), I transformed me in a sad boy, because I hate Shrek The Third.

What made this movie great for me is five things.
1,)- A turn in the story with a character development arc rather than another chapter forward in the original timeline.
2,)- The only Shrek movie I experienced in the cinema. Because I was born in December of 2004 for this experience makes it sort of hard to forget about the fourth film in my eyes.
3,)- The first moment we got to see Shrek actually cry. He's never cried in any of the previous movies.
4,)- A serviceable resolution that tied up loosely plot holes and revealed cruel information, that doesn't rely on the events of the previous films.
5,)- A Great villains with a talented voice actor. His voice can be slimy, vibrant, aggressive, and more.
The only nic pic I thought of that would not matter is redoing King Harold's Deathbed scene to be apart of this film since he's not at the birthday party. Kill him off before mentioning Arthur's name and the story wouldn't be changed in Shrek Forever After.

I see all the hate on Shrek the Third movie and I will say this. While I wasn't a big fan of the third film (we went to the movies to go see it as a kid). I still think it was pretty good considering the plot and the storyline that ties in between this one and Shrek 2. Prince Charming wanting revenge, Fiona being pregnant, Artie being the new king of Far Far Away. It still is neccessary to watch all four simultaneously.

    • @edizgunes
      @edizgunes Před 3 lety +24

Shrek the Third turned Shrek into a meme and its not the storyline that is the problem, the problem is execution, Shrek the Third plays Shrek's fears to be a dad just for laughs and Fiona has nothing to do outside of being pregnant, donkey and puss are wasted alongside the princesses and Charming is just a joke, he isn't threatening like Fairy Godmother or Rumplestilskin.

    • @promonant
      @promonant Před 3 lety +7

Another great about this film is how much importance Fiona has in the story. In the first movie, she is a princess by day who is insecure about being an ogre at night. By the end, she learns that her ogre form isn't her curse, but society. She gets slightly less focus in Shrek 2, but she is important to Shrek's arc, and it was her decision for her and Shrek to remain ogres. In Shrek 4, she is more important to the story than ever. But what's more interesting is how she went from "Princess who is ashamed of being an ogre" to "an ogre warrior who hides her princess counterpart".

You can basically sum up the third movie as Shrek and Fiona had kids, Shrek worries about being a father, hijinks ensues but at the end it's resolved and the final scene with everyone taking care of the orge babies is as normal. Your imagination can fill in the blanks better than (*cough cough*) can and did.

With the triplets being part of the journey and Puss and Donkey staying in their respective bodies.

It pushed a lot of negative stigma about the series and didn't really have anything of its own to say. If it just had the three movies like Kung Fu Panda and HTTYD, people would see Shrek as more than just a funny meme, and see the three movies for the masterpieces they are.

Another detail, if you pretend that Shrek (2001), Shrek 2 (2004) and Shrek Forever After: The Chapter (2010) formed a trilogy and that Shrek The Third (2007) never existed, the Shrek saga becomes a very beautiful story and you can give more value to Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter (2010) as an epic and emotional conclusion to a character arc.
Shrek (2001) we see that Shrek is a lonely and friendless ogre who doesn't like to be treated like a monster, but the good thing is that he can do what he wants, but in the film he discovers that he can have a friend like Donkey and a wife like Fiona, defeating Lord Farquad (the leader of Duloc) and oppression of fairy tale characters.
Shrek 2 (2004) we see that Shrek married Fiona, but that many humans, like Fiona's father, and beings like the Fairy Godmother do not accept the fact that Fiona married an ogre like Shrek, which motivates him to transform into a human and the Donkey to become a horse, and Puss in Boots is introduced, but in Shrek 2 (2004), after Fiona's father becomes a frog again and destroys the Fairy Godmother, Shrek discovers that Fiona wants to live happily with the ogre she married and they go back to being ogres and Burro returns as and donkey, and it all ends with “Living en la Vida Loca”.
Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter (2010) we see that some years have passed, creatures from fairy tales are accepted in society (different from Shrek (2001) in which they were sold to Lord Farquad) and Shrek is now a family man with 3 ogre children. And no one is afraid of him, even though he is an ogre, and they treat him like a joke, like that guy who says “the adorable goofball who showed that it is possible to change the world without changing your underwear”, which is true, because we both first films ogre proved that it is possible to change the world without ceasing to be what you are. And we see that Shrek is tired of this life and goes into a midlife crisis that makes him want to be an ogre again, and the kid from "Do The Roar" at Shrek's kids birthday party, in which even though he did the howling, everyone treated Shrek like a cute circus clown. And that makes him sign the contract for Rumplestilskin and wish he had never been born, and then, he enters a universe where ogres are marginalized by society (just like he was in the first film), Gingy is a gladiator, Puss in Boots is fat, Donkey has a more sarcastic sense of humor, and with the hooked hair, Fiona still has the curse (human by day and ogress by night) and is a warrior who leads other ogres, while the Kingdom of So Far is dominated by Rumplestilskin. Thus, Shrek discovers that everything he achieved in Shrek (2001) and Shrek 2 (2004) that made ogres like him well regarded to the point of forming a family, he should have given value and the trip in this reality in which he never was born and Rumplestilskin dominated So So Far made him realize that everything he achieved is not only important for him, but also for his friends (Donkey, Cat, Cookie, Pinocchio, etc.) and his dear Fiona. And the movie ends with Shrek kissing Fiona and everything going back to what it was before Shrek signed the contract with Rumplestilskin. And we see Shrek, back to his children's birthday and thanking Fiona for everything he has achieved since the first film.
    Shrek:
    - You know, I always thought I saved you from the Dragon Tower.
    Fiona:
    - And you did.
    Shrek:
    - No, it was you who rescued me.
And it's true, it wasn't Shrek who saved Fiona in Shrek (2001), it was Fiona who saved Shrek. For if he had never accepted her from the Dragon Tower, Shrek would be someone isolated and without friends and everything that happened in the reality in which he was never born would have happened, even if he existed.
And the film ends showing everyone singing and dancing I'm Believer (same song from the end of Shrek (2001)) representing the end of the trilogy (Shrek (2001), Shrek 2 (2004) and Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter ( 2010))
Shrek (2001), Shrek 2 (2004) and Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter (2010) are together an excelent trilogy and Shrek The Third (2007) is just a bad non-canonical spin-off .
Sorry for the text, but it was necessary.
Shrek (2001), Shrek 2 (2004) and Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter (2010) are together a trilogy for me.

You're comment is so beautiful, it made my cry. Yes, Shrek movies truly form a beautiful trilogy and Puss in Boots movie deserves at least some honor too.
Few Shrek spin-offs were also made. Scared Shrekless is the best and funniest of the Shrek spin-offs. Shrek the Halls is painfully mediogre and its canonically status is debatable. Shrek the Turd is by far the worst of the spin-offs and isn't canonical at all.

Yes, comedy is important as well as the story. For me Shrek 2 is the best because of the story: world building, character development and lore.

As that film ends off with the Fairy Tale Villains becoming villains no more, and Shrek and Fiona having kids were the main plot of that film. Plus it'll explain why Shrek has an existential crisis in the fourth movie, due to the third movie's events.

Shrek's character really relatable, after I watch the fourth movie I feel I relate to Shrek a lot all he wanted to go back to his own past life as an ogre it's like we want to go our childhoods/nostalgia moments before become a grown man then we realized not all wishes what we want is good sometimes lead to a wrong way, I agree people shouldn't overlooked Shrek Forever After too far just because they thought this movie is ruined Shrek's whole character

My issue with the film is that shrek acts extremely out of character. We have three films where he grows and matures. They just undo all of it in this 4th movie. The whole point of the first three films is because shrek hates being judged. He hated who he was deep down. And he wanted people to love him. The fourth movie completely wrecks everything.

Wait, have you done the Shrek (2001), Shrek (2004) and Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter (2020) marathon? If so, congratulations, you must have realized why Shrek The Third (2007) is so bad.
Shrek The Third (2007) looks more like a fanfic written by some super cool and cool 13 year old boy who thought Shrek (2001) and Shrek 2 (2004) were good just because of the anti-disney acid comedy. Which is a lie. I watched the whole tetralogy (or quadrilogy for the most intimate) and realized one thing: after watching Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter (2010), I discovered that what really made Shrek (2001) and Shrek 2 (2004) to be films so good WAS NEVER THE COMEDY, but the race against Shrek's time for his love for Fiona and the romantic and romantic relationship of Shrona (Shrek x Fiona) that was the main focus of the plots of Shrek (2001) and Shrek 2 ( 2004), which resulted in films that, besides being funny, were action-packed and tense. Shrek The Third (2007) forgot all that and just kept the acid anti-disney humor (in a very dull and sloppy way, but it did), so it was a weak, dull and disappointing film.
Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter (2010) may not have much humor, but he has the shipp Shrona (Shrek x Fiona) as the main focus of the plot (as it was in Shrek (2001) and Shrek 2 (2004)) and all of Shrek's race against time for his love for Fiona, just as it was in Shrek (2001) and Shrek 2 (2004), again caused all the action and tension in Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter (just like Shrek ( 2001) and Shrek 2 (2004) were). That's why Shrek Forever: The Final Chapter (2010) is a movie a thousand times better than Shrek The Third (2007) and I feel that Shrek Forever: The Final Chapter (2010) was an attempt to apologize for the shit that did in Shrek The Third (2007)
And the same goes for Cars. What made Cars (2006) such a cool film was not the comedy or the universe formed by talking cars, but the race that was the main focus of the plot and McQueen's development in his life by learning that it was the cause of all the tension and emotion that the film conveyed. Cars 2 (2011) forgot all this, giving rise to a generic and boring spy film from 007, without any kind of action, emotion or tension. Cars 3 (2017) was good because it made racing the main focus of the plot again (just like it was in Cars (2006)) and made McQueen's learning about life back to the focus of the film's tension and emotion ( the same was in Cars (2006)).
That's why I think Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter (2010) and Cars 3 (2017) are great examples of how to redeem a franchise.
Shrek (2001), Shrek 2 (2004) and Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter (2010) form a perfect TRILOGY for me, while Shrek The Third (2007) is a simple bad non-canonical spin-off. Just as I like to pretend that Cars (2006) and Cars 3 (2017) form a duology, while Carros 2 (2011) is a simple bad non-canonical spin-off.
In short, I have always seen Shrek (2001) and Shrek 2 (2004) more as romantic action and adventure comedies than as anti-Disney acid comedy films (more than that also brought the films to life, especially Shrek 2 (2004) , but it was also not the case). They had simple plots, but each with a unique and super well written way. However, Shrek The Third (2007) put it all aside and was basically a “Kingdom movie”, looking like a Game of Thrones parody, only worse, putting a mediocre teenager named Arthur Pendragon just to identify with the teenagers of that time (I remember it was fashionable at that time to be a wimpy kid, rebel or emo), to be placed as king of So So Far.
Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter (2010), although many hate it, is a good film that tried to return with the TRUE ESSENCE of Shrek (2001) and Shrek 2 (2004), that is, to be an romantic adventure movie with action, something which Shrek Third (2007) unfortunately was not. In fact, Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter (2010) should have been the third movie in place of that disappointment movie called Shrek Third (2007). Just as I think Cars 3 (2017) should have been the second film in place of Cars 2 (2011).
