  • The Ambani wedding saga, a months-long celebration leading up to the marriage of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant, cost an estimated $600 million. This lavish display of wealth highlights the growing consumerism in South Asian wedding culture and its impact on traditional rituals and art forms.
This video provides a social and philosophical critique of Pakistan and India’s wedding culture and its association with consumerism and commodification of culture.

Ambani spent 0.5% of his wealth on this wedding but people who spend their lifetime earning on weddings are furious over it.
Equating it to my 1 lac INR Salary, Ambani spent only 500 rupees on this Wedding.
Meanwhile he earned this money back while we watch this video

      More like 0.5%of net worth
And net worth is not the actual money you have
Net worth number are very inflated on internet
Actual disposable income could be far more less than 122 billion USD internet networth
At last all filthy rich people should spend money like this more money in circulation is better for economy and it creats more opportunities irrespective of how sick and extravagant it looks

The stupidity of the argument about Ambani spending so much in wedding is:
    1. He is spending a tiny fraction of his net worth in the wedding. That means he is not neglecting important aspect of life such as health, emergency funds, education over marriage unlike some middle class family.
    2. Imagine he would have done his marriage in $10k only and rest of the $599.99 million would be still in his account and not spend. Would it had helped anyone else. Now because of his spending, the money went to shopkeepers, jewellers, caterers, wedding planner who in turn must have employed so many poor workers to get this accomplished and all of them earned a share of $600 million dollar spending. What is better money lying in account of Ambani or spend in market among many people.

Have you watched the video, I guess you haven't. No one is talking about the money he has spent, it's his money and he is completely entitled to do whatever he wants. What this video criticises is the vulgar display of wealth which adds no intellectual or meaningful value to our lives but only makes us an obsessed consumer which leads us to spend more to show off our lifestyle to others. People equate this show-off to happiness but they don't realise that the things they own to show-off others are actually owning him/her.

@@darkmatter2255 Are you blind or deaf or both at the same time. What has capitalism and socialism has to do here? I am a capitalist and believer of market economy. I agree to what he said that the expenditure he did that too a big chunk in our country has given a boost to our economy which is a great message for many others who dream about marrying abroad. That's not my point.
My point is still the vulgar display of wealth. Ambani spent less than a percent of his wealth and this is the result. But people of low and mid income countries in south Asia are only going to see the end result. They will try to copy the dresses, the decoration and the aura which will be sold as the Ambani style of wedding for a long times to come. I am aware of this fact because people talk like that. Dresses are sold by saying this is exact match of Deepika's wedding or any other celebrity for that matter. People are ready to spend like anything even if that means breaking their hard earned savings and owning debt at usurious rates from unauthorised lenders. There are goods and bads of everything and I can't be beating drum only looking at the good part. The obsessed consumerism of the society is sickening. We are more concerned about "log kya kahenge" culture rather than keeping things easy. I am not against expenditure or the beautification one wants to add but I am against the dream that is sold by these glittering displays which people want to achieve even if that means getting poor at once. Same is the case in dowry. Society compares the amount one has got in dowry to evaluate the success of a marriage and this menace doesn't end. There are far better things to be obsessed about but our shallow thinking doesn't let us come out of the cocoon.

You are right. My brother spent almost half million dollars that ended in divorce in six months. Second brother spent similar money on his daughter that ended in divorce after three children. Looking at all these stupid things, I married a Korean girl who is liked by all my relatives much better than Indian wives. Most of Indian wives seem to be money and jewelry minded but my Korean wife asked for simple wedding with circling around fire and maximum 50 guests, specially who arrive at proper given time, no late comers. Golden jewelry was not even amusing to her neither diamonds. Now we have lived more than 45 years and she is perfect as wife and best life partner with no strings attached. Pure simple love and respect. She has also learned to cook Indian food to perfection. Ambanis are great fools at wasting months, times and money which could benefit poor. India spends $130billion dollars per year for wedding. Unofficial it will be thrice the number.
Wedding + Education +Medical expenses flush major chunk of money from average Indian. That's how money circulate.
Just Independence Day Bussines is 1450 crore INR.
And it is last wedding of Ambani family for next two decades. They want nation, world to remember until next and they spent less than 1% of their wealth.

I’ve seen poor families sell land or take loans for weddings, struggling with debt for years. It’s disappointing and shameful that our society is so stuck on this.

Are poor people free or someone else is forcing them? Every person has equal agency. You are not enslaved. So if someone takes loans, it is his problem. Not Ambani's.
As an Indian Hindu, I believe people are owners of their wealth and it is none of anyone's business where rhey spend it, so long as it isnt against law.
Same people would have cried even if Ambanis spend a 500 Cr or even a 50 Cr.
The very reason people earn money is to live a high standard of life.
As an Indian Hindu, you should aim to become rich and then do what ever the f k you want with that money. And no body will have a right to dictate terms to you.

SYED MUZAMMIL Bhai, i can very well under stand your pain as a Pakistani on the levish wedding culture especially when people take loans beyond their capacity just to appease relatives but as fas as Ambani wedding is concerned i think your analysis is very narrow and misses the macro picture. Mr. Ambani is not a Pakistani politician or Wadhera spending on their childerns wedding whose wealth is inherited and is built by sucking blood of peasant class. He is Gujarati Businessman and this expenditure is more of an investment in the economy of his country, branding of his business and family and laslty into growth of Indian soft power. In Jan 2024, Modi gave a call to Indian Rich to " Wed in India" and Mr Ambani did the same showcasing what Indian wedding industry has to offer to the world.
