    Guys the reason he added the chilli peppers is because in Russian the word for “spicy” is also the same as “sharp” ( ostriy ) so essentially he added “sharpness” to the blade 😂. It’s a play on words. Hope that clears it up 👍

      K... 2 things on peppers:
      1: It's a joke.
      2: We add coal or charcoal to pig iron to add carbon content... while the peppers burn down to near pure carbon at forging temp - it is a miniscule amount as he is already using high carbon steel. Brings us back to 1.
      Next (process steps):
      - Weld
      - Draw
      - Repeat X Times for Pattern
      - Final Draw
      - Hog* (hogging off excess/low carbon steel, especially for Cannister Damascus)

    • @edwardlance2379
      @edwardlance2379 Před 4 lety +5

      @@kitsnap1228 There are two different kinds of steels, the chain mail steel and the powdered steel he added. The chain mail was probably made from either stainless or nickel steel and the powder steel was one of the 10 series high carbon steels. The nickel or stainless steel does not darken in the acid wash, but the carbon steel does, so you see the contrasting pattern. The blu coloration was created by heating the balde to a specific temperature. Steel changes color depending on the temperature it is raised to. As temps rise, first it turns a straw color, then a darker straw/bronzish, then deep purple/blue then to lighter blue, then grey.
      To get really even color it takes an oven with precise temp control, or a really skilled hand with a torch.
      While that blue is pretty, unfortunately, it makes the steel too soft to hold a good edge. That blade would be strictly decorative and not really useful. Although, it is a dagger design, so it would still stab you quite easily.

      Rocío con fundente (borax 90% + arena de cuarzo 5% + carbón en polvo 5%) es necesario para realizar la soldadura (forja). El flujo se fusiona con la escala: la sustancia resultante es bastante fluida y se desplaza fácilmente durante la deformación. Además, el fundente protege contra el oxígeno y, a expensas del carbón, carburiza la capa superficial del metal, lo que reduce la temperatura de soldadura (en resumen).
