  • Still beautiful. Still Dean Winchester.
The final version of Castiel’s confession to Dean in Season 15 Episode 18 of Supernatural “Despair”, compared with the production draft of the script written by Robert Berens.
This video is meant to showcase the changes the script went through before the episode was shot, edited, and eventually aired.

If you're talking about Dean saying it back to Cas romantically rather than brotherly love then I'd have to respectfully disagree. If Cas had somehow survived this there was no way he and Dean could become lovers without them ruining Dean's character. Nothing wrong with homosexuality but it would have been totally out of character as Dean has always been a ladies man. It would have been pandering to a specific group of viewers and a betrayal to the character. You can't just changed a character after one scene, no matter how emotional it was.

ngl, this scene was cringe, but I don't mind Castiel's feelings being aired. It's nice that it's ambiguous enough since the fans of the ship are obnoxious. genuinely doubt Dean would ever reciprocate, but Castiel feeling something like pure love would definitely be believable.

They should have killed Cas off after two or three episodes, like many other angels. There should have been no weird expressions on Cas's face, no boyfriend joke from the angels or demons, and making Anna Milton Dean's angel. That would have been better. Even if we had missed out on Cas, there would be no complain then. And there would be no friendzoning Cas as everyone's so scared of anything un-het. Cas doesn't deserve that.

@@hibaahmed4227 Lmao you just automatically assumed homophobia when I agree with this guy, and I’m not homophobic in any way, shape or form. Supernatural lost its charm in about season 8, they made Sam too clueless and dumb. dean they made too stoic and manly. It’s not even an opinion, the change is super obvious, it’s just up to the people to choose which one they liked better. I liked older Sam and dean, where they actually felt human and when they died it meant something and was serious. And making cas and dean gay for each other? That is one of the worst plots I’ve ever heard in my opinion, I’m for real 😂🤣 you can tell they were running out of ideas to keep the show interesting. Basically to sum it up, the newer seasons were just a bunch of bad fanfics. In my opinion at least.

See, the thing is that they definitely weren't expecting the ship to happen. Which is why people liked the pairing so much because now Dean and Cas both get to be their own person, with story plots, and internal conflict that have nothing to do with the fact that they are queer. Which, if they were queer would be something that never happens especially with a main character. I don't think I have ever seen anything live action that gears towards an older audience where the first 3 to 5 seasons isn't a coming out story of some sort. It is either: the main is the one learning how be to queer, or the main is the one teaching someone how be to queer. Dean and Cas wouldn't have to go through that overly used trope at this point to add character development because their development as characters are separate from being queer. Which is some representation that people really clung onto, and that is completely fair in my book.
I wasn't a mad fan of this ship mainly because this is the episode when I learned of the ship. I just kinda felt bad for the people who were in the ship for years, because you can almost pin point which seasons/episodes the writers were genuinely thinking they were going to be canon and which ones they retconed it. And I wanted to add this in defense of them even if some could be a little too vocal. Because the signs were there, they just wanted to play devils advocate for the views. It should have been done earlier or not at all in my opinion, instead of the most homophobic coming out in all of history.
Final off topic thoughts, I always liked the idea that Heaven would fall. Not just the angels but all of Heaven. They set it up in season 4 and never did anything with it which is kind of disappointing. Especially when you take in account the odd character pairings you could have, the show reclaiming a feeling of high stakes, and Heaven falling seems both new and also nostalgic at the same time because of how long they were hinting at it. You could have a lot of great character conclusions from that plot as well, especially with cas because his whole purpose at one point was the betterment of Heaven. Plus, it gives a pro-active way of seeing how the angel political mess would get solved, instead of the thing they actually did which was have Bobby on a chair and say "yup Heaven is fixed 😎" That whole last season just felt weird. I honestly don't think we needed another definite villian character. Heaven falling would just have been an accumulation of events that happened from season 4 onward giving purpose to every season and creating an epic story where everyone needs each other to set things right because everyone had a hand in causing the event to happen. It would end in showing the ongoing message of found family and how the friends we make along the way make us better people. Instead of the low key Wincest ending they gave us. Plus they already set up that ghosts go crazy if they are in the vail for too long so that sets up a sense of urgency. Finally the possibility of John and Henry having a conversation in the bunker is just really fun and would be cool if it was in the final season. I think they wanted a twist ending and not something obvious like Heaven falling but that is kinda what makes this ending so cool. It feels like going up a Rollercoaster, obviously the only option is down but the ascent of getting up to the top is a crucial part of what makes the descent so thrilling and well deserved. (I know about covid but that only effected the last few episodes) But that is just my 2 cents.
(also if you did like the ending im not hating. The messaging of the end to me read off as "you are stuck in the family you were born in," and " the only happiness you can find is in death," even if that wasn't what they were going for)
      Sorry for rambling 😔
