    Answers to some common questions around the horse stance...
    1. How often should I perform the Horse Stance? Can this be done everyday? - Yes, this can be done everyday but as a beginner I would recommend 3 - 4 days per week doing 3 - 5 sets each session. Choose a time that you can consistently do across all sets. I wouldn't recommend 'maxing out' especially if you are just beginning. Start conservative.
    2. What if I cannot hold my back straight? - Getting your back straight at this depth may be impossible at the beginning due to mobility limitations. In this case, I recommend doing one of two things. 1. Using a 'standing horse stance'. Everything will stay the same in this version but you only go as low as you can while keeping a straight back (obviously the stick cannot be used for this option). 2. If the forward lean is minimal and does not effect the lower body position then it is most likely not a big problem. As you get more mobile and comfortable with the position, then you will slowly be able to get the spine more and more upright.
    3. How did you catch the stick at 03:19 ? - Hyperbolic time chamber training...only kidding.

      I have a great way to approach this , to get up to 5 minutes or more , due 1 minute (then 20 seconds rest) every day for a week , the 2nd week , do 1 min horse stance try (10 seconds) rest ....keep going down in rest time week to week , before you know it you won't need a rest , if you get down to 5 second rests, ....this method will get us over 5 min non-stop doing the horse ! :)

    When I trained Ma Bo in New York, we had to hold this stance for 1 hour with arms extended. Sometimes we even had to hold a weighted log on our extended arms for up to 5 minutes. This type of training really gave me a solid foundation for pain, breathing and martial power. This type of training is called standing on the post or Zhan Zhong (Standing Post) Exercises .

    I discovered that one benefit of the horse stance is that it can help me get out of a feeling of depression. Currently, it is winter and the lack of light is really making me feel bad. I just did some horse stance and the pain just lifted me out of depression. This is probably the lowest cost way to deal with the winter blues. In terms of time it took 6 minutes of horse stance and 12 minutes of rest, and in terms of money it was free.

    Hey man, thanks for the vid. Your horse stance is solid! Unless you're training it this way for a specificities reason, try keeping your knees at around a 90 degree bend. You're going deeper which is strong, but slightly less stable. Back in the day, the Shaolin monks believed if you fell over in battle, you'd be as good as dead. So one of the main points of horse stance is to be as low and stable as possible. One way to check you're grounded is to have people push you from different directions. If you can resist without moving your feet (and keeping a stick tucked in at your hips at the same time), you're doing it right.

    Great video and great form in your horse stance! I trained under a Shaolin disciple for nearly five years, I’d do 5mins horse stance several times a week but time is relative and those 5mins felt like an eternity sometimes, many times I’d reach 5mins but wouldn’t even be able to stand up after, I’d just fall on my face until I’d recovered.
    Not many people have the will power to hold horse stance at the proper height like you do, most people practice it too high!
    Much respect to you!

    • @hadoru314
      @hadoru314 Před rokem +3

      The problem is that most peoples cant even get in the low position because of lack of hip mobility. Im in this case and im trying to improve my posture with time and work but there is no such thing as "too high" for the horse stance. You should practice it at the lowest point you can hold with a good form.

    • @boxdelux6591
      @boxdelux6591 Před rokem

      @@hadoru314 If you have problems with hip mobility, practice static & dynamic stretching to improve your mobility. But for most intermediate & advanced martial arts practitioners hip mobility is NOT the reason that they practice horse stance too high! In Shaolin & other traditional styles of Gung Fu, a staff or pole is placed on top of the thighs, this pole should not roll forwards or backwards for the duration of the horse stance.
