Hello humans and welcome back to another video! In today’s video I show you how to perform the horse stance or in Chinese 马步 (Ma Bu). If you enjoyed this video feel free to share and subscribe for future content! - Sport
Answers to some common questions around the horse stance...
1. How often should I perform the Horse Stance? Can this be done everyday? - Yes, this can be done everyday but as a beginner I would recommend 3 - 4 days per week doing 3 - 5 sets each session. Choose a time that you can consistently do across all sets. I wouldn't recommend 'maxing out' especially if you are just beginning. Start conservative.
2. What if I cannot hold my back straight? - Getting your back straight at this depth may be impossible at the beginning due to mobility limitations. In this case, I recommend doing one of two things. 1. Using a 'standing horse stance'. Everything will stay the same in this version but you only go as low as you can while keeping a straight back (obviously the stick cannot be used for this option). 2. If the forward lean is minimal and does not effect the lower body position then it is most likely not a big problem. As you get more mobile and comfortable with the position, then you will slowly be able to get the spine more and more upright.
3. How did you catch the stick at 03:19 ? - Hyperbolic time chamber training...only kidding.

Thank you for all the info, this really helps in my martial arts and the discipline I’m trying to build
good ol' hyperbolic time chamber
I have a great way to approach this , to get up to 5 minutes or more , due 1 minute (then 20 seconds rest) every day for a week , the 2nd week , do 1 min horse stance try (10 seconds) rest ....keep going down in rest time week to week , before you know it you won't need a rest , if you get down to 5 second rests, ....this method will get us over 5 min non-stop doing the horse ! :)
Awesome 👍 Thank you
after 40 sec. my legs began to shake like a fish out the water
this exercise is nuts
started a week ago doing 40sec, feeling my legs burnin like crazy. now on second week 1m40sec and i think i could hold a bit longer but my mind is still weak i guess and i give up on pain, in any case working into progress this physical/mental resistance training, keep going and push yourself bit by bit
@honeybeomgyu I can't even hold it for more than 30sec and train my legs heavy. I guess an isometric movement is world's apart from concentrics/eccentric
i did it for 3 mins 8 secs hah
nevermind after watching the video and doing it correctly i lasted only 30 secs
Chinese people say. If you would have asked a martial art master in ancient China he would have taught you horse stance and tell you come back three years later
Ninja reflexes saved cat from concussion :) Excellent as always dude
Haha I wasn’t even worried 😳
I thought for sure it was going to get bonked.
Read comment before watching video. Watch video with an incredible amount of nervous anticipation. Thee best way to watch video.
Plot twist: the cat is a master in martial arts.
That was almost Matrix Style!

When I trained in Germany for soccer in the 80's, we called it "Sitting Sevens", because your legs had to be a perfect "7" held squat for up tp to 1-minute.
Loved this video... Control pain by controlling breathing...is such a vital point .... Not only for the body ... Even mental pain goes by same formula... Thank you so much dude
It's easier if you shave your beard and cut your man bun if you have them cause it's lighter and less wind resistants.
All pain is mental. Understand your body and you will master it, master your body and you will change your life.
When I trained Ma Bo in New York, we had to hold this stance for 1 hour with arms extended. Sometimes we even had to hold a weighted log on our extended arms for up to 5 minutes. This type of training really gave me a solid foundation for pain, breathing and martial power. This type of training is called standing on the post or Zhan Zhong (Standing Post) Exercises .
I do Cheng style BaguaZhang and Han Style Bajiquan I know all about this amazing pain but the power generation is unrivalled.
You still train ?
Sounds like you trained hard bro 👍
An hour?
This is the best horse fence description. I've seen many people doing it the wrong way on CZcamss. My Sensei taught me this method along with the breathing. An excellent description of horse stance
I discovered that one benefit of the horse stance is that it can help me get out of a feeling of depression. Currently, it is winter and the lack of light is really making me feel bad. I just did some horse stance and the pain just lifted me out of depression. This is probably the lowest cost way to deal with the winter blues. In terms of time it took 6 minutes of horse stance and 12 minutes of rest, and in terms of money it was free.
@Michael Lochlann The side effects of exercise are likely to be positive. While the side effects of drugs are likely to be negative. I found that exercise improves my mood after after 20 minutes. But, the improvement may not last the whole day.
Horse Stance boosts Vitamin D
No cats were harmed in the making of this video.
You have presented the most detailed explanation so far of this stance. It’s a great guide to proceed with.
Thank you, you explained very well, the multiple benefits of this stance and how to do it right. If people did it daily, they'd feel and look, so much better on all levels.
Glad it was helpful!
You think this is a good stepping stone to dive back into the fitness realm? I'm no stranger to martial arts, so these methods I find highly intruiging.
I’m going to do this while playing games or painting.

Great video!
I did martial arts for almost 10 years and we called it "the horse riding stance". Our instructor s were brutal at times, but now I'm thankful. I still do this often as part of my work out .
Absolutely loved this! Best Horse Stance Video I have seen so far. From a fellow Expat in Guangzhou :).
The best horse stance instructions I have ever heard ty Sir
I'm so appreciate that you learned and shared the good of Chinese's Wisdom 🙏🏻 致敬 🙏🏻
The cat is the best part here, doing perfect cat poses.
Wow, I am so happy to find a video on my favorite stance! Gracias! I used to do it when I was in my twenties... Found that standing in it for three minutes creates very peculiar effects....
Luckily I am experienced with posterior and anterior pelvic tilting.
Had to sign on just to say thank you, thumbs up and subscribe. I'd been looking form tutorials and there you are!
I only heard about this recently. Lots of videos on it but not actually describing how to do it properly! Many thanks for the details, well explained. The right speed of delivery too - well done and thanks!
Thank you so much!
Been looking for tutorials to answers my questions and found yours. Ty!
best explanation ever ! thank you so much !
Hey man, thanks for the vid. Your horse stance is solid! Unless you're training it this way for a specificities reason, try keeping your knees at around a 90 degree bend. You're going deeper which is strong, but slightly less stable. Back in the day, the Shaolin monks believed if you fell over in battle, you'd be as good as dead. So one of the main points of horse stance is to be as low and stable as possible. One way to check you're grounded is to have people push you from different directions. If you can resist without moving your feet (and keeping a stick tucked in at your hips at the same time), you're doing it right.
I was looking for a tutorial on how to do this stance, your incredible chest kept me there. I think it will motivate me to keep on doing it. Big thanks for that. It really is the perfect chest. I know it has nothing to do with the exercise, but if it brings me back for more, then it's worth it for me. Hopefully it'll motivate me to do 10 minutes. Will get back to you on that.
This is the first video I'm watching and I'm done. Subscribed.
Excellent explanation. Thank you!
yo .. I have been working on new movement, thank you for this video and I will try it.. I was practicing pickup on the moon and put it on the shelf and this looks like it will strengthening that movement.. Salute! Thank you!

Thanks bro. You went over everything thanks
Excellent! I’m doing the Hindu Squat while brushing my teeth (90-120 sec) I’ll alternate it with the Horse Stance for variation. Love it! 👍
Glad I'm not the only one that exercises while brushing his teeth. Haha In my case I'll hop back and forth on one foot like I'm jump-roping. I'll have to do horse stance now.
Wau, thank you so much for this video! A great video, indeed.
Great communication. Thanks for the information.
Thanks for this!
I have been doing this for about a

The awesome power drums! Great vid
Bro! This is great! Thank you so much
Loved the video! I will start practicing it!
Glad to hear!
Great video and great form in your horse stance! I trained under a Shaolin disciple for nearly five years, I’d do 5mins horse stance several times a week but time is relative and those 5mins felt like an eternity sometimes, many times I’d reach 5mins but wouldn’t even be able to stand up after, I’d just fall on my face until I’d recovered.
Not many people have the will power to hold horse stance at the proper height like you do, most people practice it too high!
Much respect to you!
The problem is that most peoples cant even get in the low position because of lack of hip mobility. Im in this case and im trying to improve my posture with time and work but there is no such thing as "too high" for the horse stance. You should practice it at the lowest point you can hold with a good form.
@@hadoru314 If you have problems with hip mobility, practice static & dynamic stretching to improve your mobility. But for most intermediate & advanced martial arts practitioners hip mobility is NOT the reason that they practice horse stance too high! In Shaolin & other traditional styles of Gung Fu, a staff or pole is placed on top of the thighs, this pole should not roll forwards or backwards for the duration of the horse stance.
TAKE IT MAN ! YOU SIR DESERVE A LIKE ! NICE WORK NICE VIDEO NICE CLASS !
