- History was made Saturday, April 7, 2018 in the Lara vs Hurd fight on Showtime.
Hurd was definitely the busier fighter, but Lara landed lead left hands at will early in the fight. When there was space, Lara was able to use his superior skills to his advantage, but when the fight went to the inside it benefited the 27-year-old Hurd.
But a knockdown in the final round ended up proving the margin of victory for Hurd, who dethroned the Cuban veteran Lara-ending his run of seven successful title defenses on the Showtime-televised card from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Jarrett Hurd's 12th-round knockdown of long-reigning champion Erislandy Lara secured his 154-pound title unification victory Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Hurd gets hit too much. He bases everything off of his athleticism. I always liked Lara, he has skills, great footwork, and can take a punch.
Lara was fighting a Light Heavy Weight that night. I sometimes wonder if Hurd would’ve been able to take all those flush shots if it hadn’t been for the size advantage

What a great fight. This fight reminds me a lot of Antonio Margarito vs Miguel Cotto 1. Jarret Hurd coming forward, pressing the action, throwing a thousand power punches, and could not be hurt by any of Lara’s punches, just like Margarito in that fight. Lara was moving, showed more boxing skill and landed lots of big shots, but was able to be worn down by his bigger, relentless, and more resilient opponent, just like Miguel Cotto in the first Margarito fight (which I’m sure the illegal hand wraps had a lot to do with). Also, both fights were great, high contact fights that ended with a bang. Here’s how I scored this fight:

I am surprised the Lara faithful aren't on here saying they thought he won this one too. I understand why Hurd decided to change up his style after this fight but in my opinion, this style suits him better than what he is trying to do now. Looking out for his longevity and health after boxing I would recommend a change in style too. This style is fan-pleasing but it has a lot of wear and tear on the body. Everybody on here saying they are wondering why Lara stopped moving after the 5th weren't paying attention to all the punches landing on his mid-section. That is the only thing I wished Canelo did to Lara that Hurd was able to do. Take away the mid-section in the early rounds to take away the legs in the later rounds.

As courageous an effort as I've ever seen by Erislandy Lara. He withstood an absolutely savage attack from Hurd, getting back to his feet after taking a wicked left hook, I just can't say enough about the will of Lara. What a brave warrior Lara is, whatever he got paid it wasn't enough, and I've never said that before as these guys on this level make quite a bit of money. My hats off to both of them, what a fight.
