You’re goddamn right
So cool to rewatch this 16 years later. You can really see how GSP created the template for the modern fighter: great movement, leg kicks, seamlessly mixing up striking and grappling. Our Canadian hero.
@Drew sure he did. BJ won round 1, GSP won rounds 2 and 3.
GSP lost this one but he made up for it the next time
@@jonbradley4044 eh if anything a draw I think Penn won as well. George barely did anything w the takedowns but I'm not a judge close fight could've gone either way!
Takedowns were scored differently back then. You could eat somebody’s jab for 4min 45 sec of a round and then “steal” the round with a takedown in the last few seconds. That’s just how it was.
hero ? did he kick all the migrants outside Canada ?
The amount of times BJ slipped George's legendary jab and countered in the first round is incredible
and then he spent the other two rounds getting pushed against the cage or trying to get away
you mean back before GSP even had a jab?
GSP didn't have a good jab back then. It came up later on. He refined his skills one by one.
Yeah I was really surprised to see that. Under and around every time.

Skills verse steroids.
I admire BJ as much as anyone else. He’s a natural born fighter.
But after hearing Rogan and Mike perform felatio on BJ for the entirety of the fight, It’s very satisfying to see GSP take the wind out of their sails and get the job done.
Finally, someone has said it.
@6:15 "look at this, look at this take down attempt" lol as BJ gets slammed to the ground. Imagine if it had been a take down Joe, imagine. Gets me every time.
Probably where forced to talk more about him. Dana's face after the decision says it all
gsp controlled bj in the clinch every single time, while they're salivating over his expected escape.... how about not being pushed into a corner in the first place? lmao i don't think bj even did more damage, it's just that the damage he did do was more visible. but it was all superficial, as it didn't really affect gsp's ability to dominate
well said!

BJ Penn was unbelievably talented! Amazing fighter. A true fighter who wasn’t afraid to take on anyone in any weight class!
That is why I always respected BJ Penn. A true warrior! Unlike GSP who should have fought Andersson Silva after this fight. BUT, he was probably afraid of moving up and getting tore up by the Brazilian Spider!
The phenom. Top tier. Tough too. GSP fought some of the best ever on his rise to the top. Penn was a natural, if there ever has been one, but GSP was driven by ambition and was relentless in his pursuit to be the GOAT. He adapted and evolved like very few did.

BJ’s takedown defence and stripper moves
Yeah, I thought Joe's bias has gotten worse over the years but this shows he's always been that way.
he a glazer
Penn was such a unique fighter. He was so talented that he could just kind of "show up" and dominate, which meant he never developed a great training ethic, which limited his longevity and peak. But he was so strong, so flexible, and so good on the ground. I'm not his biggest fan or anything, but gotta respect what he brought to the octagon.
Look at him in his prime. Boxing and Twitch is so good
Got his BJJ black belt and won the world BJJ championship in 3 years as well. He literally was a Prodigy
Well said
Great jab too
Ofc he very well could have won this fight
People have forgotten about the greatness of BJ Penn.
Part of it was at least self-inflicted because the dude kept fighting well past his prime, and couldn't stop losing. It tarnished his legacy to the point where now modern fans can just look at his record on Wikipedia, and write him off as a bum however incorrect it may be. Knowing when to retire is so important, had he stayed retired after the Nick Diaz fight, his legacy would have been seen in a more positive light.
No trust me he haunts my dreams I think it was UFC 95 not sure, maybe ufc 2005 but I played the my career mode and for months maybe years I couldn't beat bj penn due to him always submitting me
Nah casual.
Who?
The real lightweight goat
I just wanna say how hard it is to be a good referee in a sport like this and I consistently see many more good calls than bad calls. Definitely impressed.
It brings tears to my eyes when GSP hugs BJ and raises his hand. True sportsmanship!
Yea cause he knew he lost
@@kevinhunt1202 Nah. BJ won round 1 and GSP won rounds 2 & 3. Look up the stats.
@@kevinhunt1202 gsp controlled him every time they clinched. bj spent two rounds being pushed against the cage or trying to get away. there wasn't a moment that gsp was in real danger from bj. gsp just stalked him and picked his shots. bj has a lot of natural ability and freakish flexibility, but he should've spent more time on developing his strength and stamina. the contrast between what was happening and what the commentators were saying was hilarious

I think it was on the JRE where George's coach said of anyone GSP fought, they noticed by watching tape and slowing it down that BJ had the fastest reaction time of anyone GSP ever fought. Thats why BJ was so elusive in his prime in the standup. This is peak MMA here for me in terms of enjoyment. I absolutely loves this era.
These fights literally helped the UFC blossom and made teenage me really get into MMA
Also 2 fighters that can hang in any era of the UFC
Facts I definitely think BJ Penn would transition well into today, same with GSP
@@TheeUnknown420 BJ Penn would struggle to even make it into the top 5-10 rankings with the insane level of competition currently at 170. GSP would be elite no doubt, but I don't think he'd even manage to win a title once let alone hold onto it for any significant amount of time
@@KyleLindheimer BJ would absolutely have to be at 155, but hes too far gone now anyway. If youre looking at prime Bj, he'd be competitive, i point specifically to how underrated his boxing was, but yeah, hes not breaking top 5-10.
GSP also in the same boat, he'd fare better than Bj, but he would definitely not take the belt at 170.
@@TheeUnknown420 BJ could hang as a lightweight, probably couldn't take the modern Welterweights.
@@NidokingOtsutsukiGSP with the same training and nutrition would be a beat in this era lol. He had the best physique and is an incredible athlete. He wasn’t the best pedigree of a wrestler but his athleticism made him insaine. I’d say he wins the title agaisnt anyone but would lose it but he can win it back
Newer fans love to dog BJ Penn which i get because of his long losing streak, but people who were around back in the day knew how savage he was. He was legitimately crazy enough to fight Machida at light heavyweight. He was the embodiment of fight anyone, anytime, any weight. True warrior spirit. He didn’t face away from challenge just to try and keep his win record. Not to mention he has 3 title defenses at 155 which is the same number as Khabib. Khabib has a better resume but still title defenses is a big stat
At hw/openweight, machida weighed like 220ish...but yeah agree with everything you said
The new fans have no idea how good bj really was. His shocking win at 46 against Hughes, going up in weight 15 pounds was incredible. He's one of the GOATs no doubt. To me he's he's king of lightweights. These days guys like khabib, chandler, gaetje(terrible spelling sorry) literally nearly kill themselves trying to make 155. BJ was a true lightweight. Ah the old days were something totally different. The new fans have no clue basically about anything to do with the sport but that's how it goes
he would lick the opponents blood off his gloves. maniac. going for politics now.
Khabib has a better resume? He only fought a washed up Conor and Dustin Porier… this dude fought GSP and a bunch of other killers. I’ve never heard anyone say positive things about khabibs resume… lol
@@cjdig86 conor wasn’t washed up he’s just trash at lightweight. Khabib beat Rafael, mj, barboza, dustin and gaethje. There was no one to fight when he retired he dominated the top of the division.

This must have been a very tough fight for GSP. Not only dealing with prime BJ, also took a poke to his eye that cut his eyeball and then Penn followed that up with an uppercut that broke GSP's nose just 1 minute into round 1. Dude had to fight prime BJ with one eye and a broken nose for 14 minutes, that would not be fun.
So he took him down, to chinatown.

BJ’s hands are so powerful and quick. It’s insane how he can dodge and counter every single strike from his opponent. Deceptively powerful and dexterous.
St Pierre in his prime was unstoppable though. Both are two of the greats.
I remember this fight like it was yesterday. I'm so happy to have seen these two legends in their prime.

"Your the best the best ever" - Anderson Silva to bj Penn
@@Danielfucks69 i would fuck bj up. Easy money
Yes. Rogan loved the BJJ guys.
But GSP dominated 2 and 3 . Much to joes liking
BJ had some of the greatest potential of fighters from the 00s. He could have been so much more, but it was not to be even though he's a legend of the sport.
Bj had some crazy balance, pretty much glued to the floor. Absorbing hard leg kicks while landing very hard power jabs of his own. Serious leg strength allowed him to spring forward with his attacks multiplying his power
Oh my god I remember being a kid watching UFC with my dad, and Rogan’s favorite thing to say at the time was “his mouth is open, which makes you more susceptible to knockouts” like it was burned into my brain, and watching this brought the memory back lmao
😂😄👍🏼
I always considered these two very different fighters. BJ never seemed to really train hard, he just had a talent that couldn't be explained. He was just gifted. I'm not saying he didn't train, but that never seemed to be something he had to do so he didn't. GSP was extremely talented too, but also definitely trained and sharpened his skills constantly. I think it means a lot that he got poked in the eye, which definitely hindered him. He got probably a broken nose, which clearly had an effect. He was up against a man who had arguably the greatest take down defense, yet still got taken down multiple times. He never gave up, he never lessened up, and he beat BJ. This was BJs fight to lose after the first round. He got demoralized I think when GSP was getting better as the fight went on. I think the right man won for sure. He earned that win.
above all else, gsp is simply stronger or in better physical condition. he had control in every clinch
BJ definitely trained hard. i’m pretty sure joe rogan once said he trained so hard he couldn’t hold his newborn child afterwards due to exhaustion.
@@jakestringer513 that’s me after I do 20 push ups
@@jakestringer513yeah In his prime he had the best conditioning in the octagon no doubt
GSP being well juiced certainly helped.
Just think; BJ was the UFC welterweight champion, he choked out Matt Hughes but got stripped after contract negotiations fell through. He left and went to fight in other organizations. One of those fights was against a 225 lb Lyoto Machida. Then he returns to UFC and is fighting GSP here. This is why old MMA records can't be compared to current ones. The old days of MMA were so chaotic and unorganized it was not as easy to maintain a consistent record, especially something like title defenses.
Thing is BJ Penn should have stayed retired after the loss to Nick Diaz. That's when his record really began to look ugly because he kept losing and losing in one-sided fashion.
@@madgavin7568 he was probably more worried about earning money than some stupid record tho, fighting was his job after all
@@madnomad2246 Money was never an issue for Penn, he was born into wealth and his family never had money troubles. Penn himself made a small fortune fighting too. It was Penn's ego, a desire to prove he was still the best when he wasn't anymore and a stubbornness bordering on stupidity to not stay retired.
I don't know about you, but dismissing a 16-14-2 record as not worth caring about is actually stupid because fans who weren't around during his era i.e. most MMA fans nowadays who came from the Conor/Ronda hype-train will only know BJ from his losses and dismiss him as a bum because of his record, irrespective of what he did in the past.
Knowing when to retire is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, otherwise you're just tarnishing your legacy. Its always the "I just wanna fucking fight" type of guys who have the worst falls from grace and the worst losing streaks when their prime ends.

I think GSP underestimated BJ's boxing skills in that first round. It just seems wild that someone that looks like BJ could even go toe-to-toe with someone that looks like GSP, especially the way GSP destroys Matt Hughes, who was a beast.

Just sucks that he didn't really gave his 110% effort improving his strength & conditioning and wrestling, majority of the time he just relied on his talent, he did well but it all caught up in the end. Just to show that hardwork beats talent everytime.
Prodigy. Stuff was too easy for him he never really worked on his short comings. I love fighters that don't out work or out volume their opponents.

One guy looks like he's 2 weight classes above dj because of their bs weight cutting rules and he's juiced to the gill
That guy is no where near penn or gsp
I was gonna mention Yan too compared to this. His pace compared to this jumps right out and also the advancement in combination striking from here is visible. Although I think bj has a good style for this pace and his deliberate jabs and fluid counters work until about 12 mins into the video where the pace halts to a grind from gsp turning it into an mma fight instead of a boxing match by working the margins in the clinch and filling in some blanks with a takedown. The style war and each fighter finding ways to keep bringing it is crazy impressive and I think bj could be more fit but gsp shows good cardio bursts late into the match to initiate the clinch. In short I think there’s a combination of skills at display here that could slow down the modern high pace fighter.
@@rs3daily587 I just didn't know how to spell it and didn't feel like googling it
@@marcocuda4965 you forget man
That's a 155er going to a spilt decision with the goat
Penn is a lot better than what you give him credit for
His sprawls in round 1 alone were legendary
Gsp at this point was still putting guys like karo and sherk on their back
What a fight thought this was real good...big up to both athletes
What a great fight, both knew what to do
I hope current newer fans understand how much of a force Prime Penn was! Warriors! Amazing fight
BJ Penn forgotten Legend
gone but never forgotten
Great fight to the end!
2 legends definitely.
BJ is a GOAT in my book!
Always down for a good scrap🤙🏾🤙🏾
The way gsp could fluidly throw kicks/high kicks from both legs with almost no set up was something else
Dude i love this classic fights. More please!
One of the fights with the highest quality and level inside the octagon ever. If not the fight.
Both brilliant fighters. Art in motion.
You can breathe the mutual acknowledgment and intense competitiveness these two guys had.
"You can breathe the mutual acknowledgment"
Wtf? Stop trying to speak in some kind of weird poetry lol.
@@Kriddle1229 Oh it’s not that hard man. Very simple metaphor. I’m sure if you make an effort you can get it.
Perhaps I should just say: yO bRoO tHaT wAs lIkE sO sICK mAaN.
So you get it.
@@luismarioXD Who said I didn't "get it". That's not a metaphor btw. You probably shouldn't use words if you don't know what they mean.
Don't deflect on me because you were called out on writing some cringe shit that didn't make sense.
@@Kriddle1229 That was literally a metaphor man. Perhaps you shouldn’t correct if you are not doing it right.
Metaphor: A thing regarded as representative or symbolic of something else, especially something abstract.
Breath= Symbolic meaning of feel, perceive. Get it now?
I love seeing the little spats in the comments
what a way to give and receive damage , 2 legends show them the respect
This was one of the first mma fights I ever watched! I am now a black belt in BJJ under Amal Easton and a certified Muay Thai instructor under ajarn Chai.
BJ Penn was the definition of anybody, anytime. The dude was sooo damn good at any weight class. they dont make them like him anymore thats for sure
khabib would demolish him wdym
@@habibbialikafe339 Khabib also fought in only 1 weight class and has to almost kill himself to get there. And before you say "almost everybody does that" well almost everybody uses steroids but you people always say Khabib is better than Jon Jones so you can't make that argument anymore 😂
@@habibbialikafe339 lol BJ was called "The Prodigy" bec of his elite level BJJ. Khabib would never be able to take "Prime" BJ down and if for some reason Khabib does take BJ down, Khabib would never be able to submit "Prime" BJ. That leaves striking, "Prime" BJ is a savage when it comes to striking and is just levels above Khabib.
@@habibbialikafe339 yeah right, prime bj Penn would demolish prime Khabib
@@remyhavoc4463 khabib was deathly afraid of fighting anyone bigger than him, that’s why he made unhealthy cuts to lw so he could fight people smaller and less stronger than him, he would never fight anyone who he had o give up size or strength advantage to that’s the exact opposite of bj who wanted to challenge himself against the best don’t matter which weight class, khabib dream fight was against gsp but refused to fight gsp at 170, gsp said he could only make 165 and khabib still refused, rofl legacy fight my ass he was scared to fight 10 pounds above his weight. Khabib could never be bj even if he tried.
This was a awesome fight. Both legendary fighters🤟
8:08 probably my favorite commentating by rogan. It took him a minute to register, "they're all j Penn? Like George Forman?" Lmaooooo
Welterweight Goat 🐐 vs Lightweight Goat 🔥🔥🔥
2 Legendary Icons
Crazy to think in this time BJ was able to fight toe to toe with prime GSP and now he's old and got submited by a security guard time age, so sad
@Mezzy Mez Yes but BJ threw a lot of his years away outside of the cage.
That was dillon danis lol, not bj. Bj penn did get dropped by a massive fat guy in a street fight when he was on meth a few years ago though
Alcohol didn't help
its gonna happen to you. i turn 40 in 2 months and compared to myself at who peaked at 25- 30 its so much harder to stay in shape these days.
@@too_sturdy don’t meant to rude but 40 is not late at all to be in “shape” sounds like an excuse to me bro.
GREAT FIGHT . One of the best ones
This is a prime example of one fighter doing more damage, yet losing the match. It was a fair 29-28 for GSP according to then, and nowadays, scoring. Yet, who’d you rather be after that fight was over? BJ took little damage, and GSP took a lot. I love to reference this fight as the quintessential scoring criteria example. Rounds 2 and 3 were clear rounds where GSP’s effective grappling outweighed the effective striking of BJ. Loved this fight then, and love it now.
Great example for people whining today about Dricus du Plessis vs Sean Strickland. One was damaged more but the other landed 6 takedowns. The takedowns won it.

The fact that BJ fought legends like St.Pierre at WW, and Machida at LHW shows you why he's an all time great, and the greatest LW fighter of all time. People can say what about Khabib, BJ has the same amount of title defenses, and BJ didn't pad his record by fighting bums. He was always down to scrap. Anytime, anywhere. BJ fighting Lyoto would be like Khabib fighting Poatan Pereira, and we all know Khabib would get his head caved in.
Showing up to fight and winning are different things. Khabib was scared to fight saint pierre at welterweight cause he has a head. His iq in general is on a different level.
And I don't know why people keep saying that khabib fought bums when he is a two time world sambo champion. And we have all seen what sambo masters are doing in ufc so I hope people can cut the crap and get over the fact that Russia has great fighters if not better than the rest of the world.
@@bayyinahawesome415I love khabib but he didn’t duck anyone more like he got lucky with some unfortunate events like never fighting the second best fighter in ur weight class in that era(tony Ferguson)and never really fighting the best grapplers in that weight class so ya but he’s still undefeated no matter what 😂
2 legends! 2 GOATs
The bias in this fight by Rogan is hilarious
The way BJ Penn exploded out of GSP’s mount on one leg repeatedly is just incredible!!
Old school beef. Love it.
GSP is my all time favorite fighter and the GOAT 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
About 40 hits to the back of the head
fking loved this fight the day it happened. what a great match. I was still in my 20s and not givin a shit about nothin, i was happiest then lol.
