  • The light rail (Métro léger) of Charleroi, Belgium was built from the 1960s in order to replace the outdated tram network with a contemporary, fast and attractive means of transport.
    But due to the economic downfall in the region, the ambitious plans came increasingly to a halt. The often poorly placed metro stations, as well as the competition through parallel bus lines caused a decending number of passengers. Some of the already completed metro sections were never opened, the works on other lines were stopped.
    Since the 2000s, the previous torso has been expanded by tram-like sections. The routes in the city center were finally completed, forming a complete circle with multiple branches going off in different directions. The fully built section to Centenaire has not seen a single passenger train to this day.
    In this video we will take a ride on the light rail going from east to west: Starting from Soleilmont, the M4 line runs in left-hand traffic towards the city center. We use the city circle and pass through a mostly abandoned industrial area before reaching the town of Anderlues, where the LRVs are still running as a classic, single-track tram line.

    Ich war noch nie in dieser Stadt in Wallonien, deshalb hat mit dieser virtuelle Besuch sehr gut gefallen und der Film ist sehr aufschlussreich über das Verkehrsnetz dort. Big like! :)

    Are these old Kusttrams from the 1980s?

    • @TramChris
      @TramChris  Před 2 lety +1

      No, but they are pretty much the same type. The main difference is that the cars in Charleroi are bidirectional, while the Kusttrams have doors and a driver's cabin on only one side.

    Ist da noch Linksverkehr?

    • @TramChris
      @TramChris  Před 2 lety

      Ja, aber nur auf den Strecken nach Soleilmont (M4) und Centenaire. Das restliche Netz wird im Rechtsverkehr bedient.

  • @tobiasschmidtdasausflugstv4480

    Sind das Hocheinstiegswagen oder ganz normale Tramwagen ??

    • @TramChris
      @TramChris  Před 2 lety

      Die Wagen sind hochflurig. Es sind aber fast alle Stationen mit erhöhten Bahnsteigen ausgestattet, sodass dann "nur" noch eine Stufe überwunden werden muss.

    the vid is very nice but the city is very bad ! The whole rail system should be better converted to bus after depreciation of the metro fleet and the rails.

      How would conversion to bus help anything? Light rail has shown time and time again to encourage new indutries and businesses to open in areas where it exists.
      The issues of industrial decay in Charleroi are more do with the entire Wallonia region, which was one of the most heavily industrialised in Europe. The entire region needs to be economically realigned to modern industries and there's multiple hurdles that go the very heart of Belgian politics and society.
