I had a similar situation to the first story. My mil used her card on my phone to order dinner, my phone saved it, I accidentally used it next time I ordered food. As soon as I noticed I paid the money to my mil and removed the card from my just eat, it was like £30 and I felt so bad. I can't imagine stealing 17k, let alone not take responsibility for it.
For some reason my pay pal won’t delete the card of a previous employer off my account. We remove it and it’s right back again. I go out of my way to make sure I NEVER use her card. We may not have been a proper fit for each others needs, she is absolutely loaded, but that doesn’t mean I should take anything from her. I too would feel just so guilty and awful.

Last week, I had to take Tessa Lou in for surgery while mom & dad were away.
I realized a cpl days after they got home that I still had mom's CC in my wallet. I didn't even use it and I felt guilty for still having it on me! Tessa's mom laughed when I called her to apologize 'I didn't even realize it was gone!'

Story Two: the coat is made of vicuña wool. These Peruvian animals (relatives of llamas) produce small amounts of extremely fine wool, which is very expensive because the animal can only be shorn every three years and has to be caught from the wild. It is the second finest wool in the world (that happens to be legal) to own. The first finest type of wool is illegal to own, because the Tibetan antelope it comes from is endangered. If the niece's intentional prank had ruined a $20,000 car, people would expect the niece to make it right. It's no different because it's a coat.
There's literally people in the comments defending the girl and her Mum for not wanting to pay back the money??? And saying she's an a-hole for "caring more about material things than her own sister/niece". Which is crazy. They're like "the kid should work it off and needs the car to do so!" Like uh, no. The parent isn't even willing to punish their kid properly what makes you think it'll ever get paid off 😂😂. Absolutely craziness.

There was a judge judy episode where she blamed a child victim for the destruction of their coat because they wore it to walk to school. It was in their locker during classes but another kid broke into the locker and destroyed the coat because it was nice, judge Judy told the victim that they shouldn't have worn a nice coat in their area since it was a gift from a wealthier relative and was too nice for their demographic. I was so ticked off at her decision and the victim blaming

It's for sure not her fault and I hate the victim blaming of a poor little girl, but it is still a valid life lesson! It isn't about who's right and who's wrong in the situation in the end it's about avoiding getting hurt and it's about TRUST. You can't control/trust all the people around you or what they'll do all the time. You can only control what you do and who you choose to trust. So....maybe don't stroll down dark alleyways in a tuxedo wearing an expensive watch and a wallet full of cash!! You can't trust that environment or the people who usually frequent it. What's sad about the coat is that that lady thought she could trust her family and turned out she was wrong 😢.
Victim condemnation is the coward's way out, every time. I totally agree with you. Not one of those sitting in judgement would take on, front up to, or face the perpetrator on the spot. They're cowards, and they're bullies.
What's even more painful about the second story is that after OP discovered the price for the coat she was anxious to wear it and put it away YET she felt safe and comfortable enough to wear it to her sister's house, she trusted those people, felt like it was a safe space for her treasured items then both her sister and niece shattered that trust and safety.
I wouldn’t visit someone again after they betrayed my trust like that.

I completely agree. And being grounded will obviously not teach this teen a lesson. Making her sell her car to make up for her actions on the other hand will. To make a lasting lesson you have to figuratively hit them where it hurts. If I had a kid and it did this I would also be deleting any and all social media and they would not be allowed back on till they give a whole hearted apology.
Allowing this kind of crap to slide and failing to appropriately correct them will only enforce that it was ok for them to do.

There's a huge difference between a PRANK and VANDALISM/ASSAULT. Many people don't realize this. What the niece did was outright assault and vandalism, not a "prank." A PRANK would be making the aunt THINK something had happened to the coat when nothing had. Pranks should be fun for everyone. Not abuse.

Excellent point! I've tried to explain that to my kids too who have misunderstood what an actual prank is thanks to social media! I've seen way too many "prank" videos where I'm like 🤔🧐🙄 Where's the prank? That wasn't a prank nor was it funny!
This! Why her parents aren’t monitoring her social media and teaching her right from wrong is appalling. At least the dad has far more sense than the mum! The niece would be charged and have a juvenile record, as she should. Yes, we monitored what our children were doing on there electronics until they were 18. They knew the rules prior to getting their electronics and agreed to the rules. They also had to pay half of the amount of their phones and iPads. It’s called responsibility and accountability. Both are in their mid 20’s, have started their careers and are thankful that we discussed not posting certain things as future employers do look at social media! The niece and her enabling mum are vile prat’s.

Story 2: If you just ignore your kids' mistakes, and don't have them pay the consequences, the chances are significantly higher you will be paying a lawyer to fix their mistakes in the future.
The first chick fumbled her own bag; rich in laws, lawyer boyfriend, living rent-free? God, I wish.

Yup. She was just too greedy. Had she not done that...and married the guy (or stayed with him longer), I'm sure the in laws would have helped her with a job (if she wanted), paid for some vacations, etc. She's stupid.

He's from a rich family. You best believe that coat, their jewellery, property etc. are insured because the rich, especially if they're wealthy, know the value of insurance in preserving their wealth. They even insure to settle their estate when they die, so their beneficiaries doesn't have to spend cash upfront or liquidate assets to make estate related payments.
Tiktok pranks can leave life changing results for some people. My friends lost their home to fire after a couple of lads put fireworks in a bin leaning against the house. The house burnt down. Thankfully my friends were away but they lost everything. The loss of things that matter, photos, momentos devastated them.

It depends. My card had fraudulant charges on it. Over the phone they went back several months to verify with me what I charged and fixed the amounts that I didnt charge. Although, the only charges that weren't mine were only back 3 days. Btw, I am far from wealthy.
I had a dude drop a full 24oz glass of beer on my leather jacket which was draped over my purse in the seat next to me. He said sorry, brought me napkins, and freaked out when I told him he needed to pay for cleaning or replacement. The bartender took his side and threw me out, so I called the owner. My jacket was replaced after a quick video review.

My paternal Grandma was a little (4'7"), but a petty woman. So petty in fact that when Grandpa was teaching her to drive a car he yelled at her. She then promptly stopped the car, turned it off, and told him to f**k off. He could drive her everywhere after that. Never drove anywhere herself for the rest of her life. This was her hill to die on. I loved it. I miss her!
There's a difference between a "prank" and a CRIME.
I had a girl run up to me in a parking lot and grab the strap of my purse and yank on it like she was stealing it. She was a stranger to me so obviously I reacted accordingly. I was about to reach for my knife, and I yelled at her loudly for others to hear to get away. When she let go , she started laughing and saying " Calm down it's a prank! " and saw her friend filming with her phone also laughing. I cannot believe she thought that would be a prank . It was distressing.

when my grandmother was in the hospital once and very out of it from medications she was on, I told her I liked her yellow hospital socks to try and make conversation, didn't think she'd remember it. I’m 18, and I work at a dry cleaners, and I deal with expensive and designer things all the time. If I ruined a luxury item on accident, I would be on the floor *begging* for forgiveness, and I’d be selling my car that instant to make up for such a horrible mistake. I can’t imagine ruining something that expensive ON PURPOSE, and then LAUGHING and refusing to accept responsibility and pay back the cost of the item.

OP wanted to sue her, which would have been her right, the husband just informed her of the more effective channel/process. And since that's not her area of expertise, it was better he took care of it. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. It doesn't matter gender, I'm not going to get on a high horse if someone who knows more about something tells me a better way of doing something and offers to handle it. Why would I want to mess up a situation that could be taken care of better by someone with more knowledge just because they fit into a stereotype of someone who would have more knowledge of said situation?

@@HeidiWilde Smart money says the coat wasn't insured at all. Hubby just knows how the game is played and is a master at it. This way the teen gets punished, wife gets her coat replaced, sister gets a reality check, and there is no long standing family animosity because insurance companies are the devil, am I right. It wasn't that he was the man in the relationship; it was that he was the poker player.
As for the mom's child-rearing, yeah, that's going to come back to bite her in the behind if she doesn't start holding her daughter accountable for her actions.

The fact that the mother of the coat-killer didn’t take what her daughter did seriously is exactly how this spoiled and entitled child got the way she is to be able to do such a horrific thing to anyone. Regarding the ruined coat - if it's designer and cashmere or leather, $20K isn't a surprise. The surprise is that a 16-year-old is so clueless she doesn't consider the consequences for ruining said coat. She's the one who found it on line and was 100% aware of its value, after all. I don't know if it was that niece specifically, I understood that it was her sister in laws daughter that saw the price online not the bratty niece. But regardless of who found the price she knew the price and that her aunt liked it very much and still went ahead and ruined not caring about her aunts feelings or the possible consequences. I have a friend who was at a party once - he was at an empty table wondering about the decoration, so he picked up a dove and when he put it back down the wing broke of. A girl came screaming and started crying that it was her 800€ designer JW Anderson bag wich he broke. he felt really bad and sent her the money for the bag and she bought a new one right on the spot. since it was a lot of money for him to pay for a bag, he said he’s gonna take the broken one at the end of the party (since he basically just paid for it) and he could try to fix it to give to his girlfriend. she said no and that he ruined her evening and how he could even touch people’s belongings. But luckily a few people defended him since it really was an accident and he wasn’t the only one who had mistook it for decoration - so he got the bag in the end. Turns out the wing was magnetic and one of the magnets had popped off, so it could’ve been fixed easily right there… 14:25
A lot of parents have that "kids will be kids" attitude but the girl who intentionally got paint on her aunt's coat was just being malicious. Glad the bother in law is holding her accountable.

My parents would have forced me to get a job and pay back every cent. I would have also been grounded until I was 30.
My mom will confiscated everything I own because she think those will be hazard stuff for me to use. And then told me to pay for it, for the rest of my life perhaps.
And then will mention this incident for the rest of my life, at any major events, or even when she was talking to her friends.

This is pretty normal unfortunately. That the mother of the girl and the OP’s sister thought grounding the girl for a week was enough punishment said a lot. The girl was never taught that her actions had consequences or she would have thought first before ruining such an expensive coat. At 16 it is unlikely she will change that much either.

Story 1 - This happened to me last year, sorta. Visiting my mom with my daughter, she and I alternate who pays for dinner. At one point, we ordered food from, I think, UberEats. I put mom's card into my iPad and moved on. A month or so after that visit, I ordered from UberEats without thinking. $40 on my mother's card! I felt so guilty, I got a card and mailed a check to my mom (AFTER taking her card# out of the app, of course!). Feeling that nuts over $40, couldn't IMAGINE $17,000.00! DIL *sucks*.
My mom isn't tech savvy, so she has me order stuff for her online sometimes and made me save her card so that she doesn't have to give it to me every time. There was one time I forgot to change it back to my card and ordered something with her card. I felt really bad and paid her back immediately. It wasn't even that much. Barely $10. But I still felt bad. 😂

I'm surprised that the son didn't verify with the parents about why they changed their minds if they gave the GF permission to use the card. Instead he refused to talk to them to the point they had to ambush him in his office which they gave him money to open. Seems a bit odd especially for a lawyer to not get both sides of the story.

people in love are really blind sometimes. if he really loved her, and she sounds like real manipulative piece of sh#t, she would get him on her side in a second. usually you don't expect your loved ones to lie to you and if she was playing this "rich parents hates poor normal girls" card from the beginning, she could pretty well "groom" him to the point he was blindsided from another angle too. sprinkle it with some "you dont have time for me these days" too and she would guilt-trip him into some ugly situations pretty quickly. at least there was no child, which surprised me because that would be her lifetime meal-ticket. at the same time, I dont think this lie would survive first few family celebrations tbh. 😂
You don't know how much time had gone by. Lawyers, especially ones opening up their own law firm, work LONG LONG hours. As they probably don't have your own paralegal or secretary/administrative assistant, so not only are you doing the lawyering but you have to do your own research, and write ups, etc. As he said, he was working 14 hour days, and I suspect that was cutting it down for his parents. I've had friends that were just starting out that would basically sleep in their offices. So, he might not have been avoiding them as much as just working a lot. And maybe just 3 days have gone by before they showed up at his office.
I guessed that the son/boyfriend was working long hours (anyone starting a business up does), but a red flag for me was this - where was his girlfriend?? Why wasn't she at the office, helping him get his business off the ground? If she was serious about him and this law firm was their future, then she should have been there when she wasn't working, sleeves rolled up, helping out. Would've given her far less time to be shopping online with the in-laws' credit card... The only positive is that at least she won't be entitled to a penny from the business, as she's put nothing into building it.
When my BIL was building his business up, the whole family helped out (including my hubby and I). But his wife (my sister) worked her butt off and he still credits the family, especially his wife, with doing everything possible to ensure his success. As a result, she has an equal stake and has been able to reap the benefits, because she put the work in to building that foundation. You don't have to be trained in the appropriate professional field (eg law in the case of the video, or accountancy in my BIL's case) to help out - answering phones, cleaning, making coffee, etc, requires no qualifications. If nothing else, it's a morale booster to be surrounded by people willing you to succeed.
I'm glad the guy in the video realised his girlfriend was a leech before she became entitled to a chunk of his hard work and effort (eg his business and his bank account).

Like making sure he eats, bringing him good food, not just fast food, making sure he takes breaks so to not burn out and making sure he gets enough sleep, run errands for him, tidy up the office, make coffee, there's a lot of little things that can make a difference and show you care.

First couple was obviously very rich if they gave loan to their son to start a law firm( those things are expensive) so the 17k may not have been a big enough money for them to notice. In all probability the DIL didn't withdraw it all at once so they may not have picked it up sooner.

I still to this day have an old employers card in my PayPal. I tried to remove it several times but it just pops back up. It even updated and renewed recently. I go out of my way to never use it. Like, the lady is absolutely loaded. But just because we were not a good fit for each others needs, doesn’t mean I should take from her. Just because I don’t want to eat at your table, doesn’t mean I don’t still want to see you eat (succeed). It’s a condition of the heart that lets people take from others without guilt.

True, 17k over 4 months is just under 5k a month. That's not a lot of money. BUT, it's still theft. As Charlotte said, one more time I'd get. You hit checkout, and click to confirm and don't even realize it. But 17k takes some work to spend. Especially if it's not one big purchase. It's a few Celine bags, or a couple of Prada bags.

Awww, that's so sweet though! My Aunt Conchita is like that, if someone admires something she has, she gives it to them. When I was 17, I went on a 3 week trip with my aunt, uncle, 3 cousins, and a friend. We drove to Mexico City in a van and took our time, visiting many cool places along with visiting her relatives.
Every house we went to, we were given gifts! I've never met kinder, more generous people, and I felt bad that I didn't have anything to give them.
When we visited a huge ranch that belonged to a friend of my uncle's, I was having a blast playing with some baby goats. I don't speak much Spanish, but I thought my uncle's friend asked me, "Do you like the goat?" I smiled and answered, "si, me gusta mucho!"
I saw the consternation on my cousin's face as the man picked up the little goat and took it around the corner. She tried to quickly explain that this man is going to present me with a dressed goat carcass in a few minutes, ready to be roasted, and I need to thank him because it's an honor to receive such a gift!
I misunderstood his question. He asked me if I like goat _meat,_ and I answered, "Yes! I like very much!"😒😢

Story #1: Traveling Nurse here. Was making 4 thru 6 figures a month, because I was willing to take the most difficult cases. I once ate at a restaurant, accidentally left my debit card, some services person picked it up. Didn't alert anyone about it, but instead used my card to the tune of $7'000. Before I realized that something was up, and because I didn't know the person. I immediately went to the police, who tracked them down, and arrested them. See dumbest boyfriend brought the card to girlfriend, and then they bought shoes, clothes, food, and more on me.

My boss is an elderly, extremely wealthy lady who pays no attention to her accounts whatsoever and her tech skills extend to calling and texting with her phone. Her accountant trusts me and would never question anything that popped up on the credit card they made for work so I could shop for her using a card with my name on it but paid automatically by her bank.
That said, I didn’t catch that my food delivery app had defaulted to my work credit card after using it to order for her. I was absolutely mortified to discover that a meal I ordered from a pricey restaurant for my family had been booked to my work card. It felt so wrong and icky despite being a total mistake! I immediately contacted her accountant and fixed it.
It never mattered if she would notice or it would harm her. Such thoughts never even went through my head.
The parents did their son a huge favor by exposing his girlfriend for being a sociopath. Normal people feel guilt and it’s what allows civilized society to function. She’s not normal.

And, agreed, the meat is going to be produced regardless, might as well make use of the leather. In the case of furs, I don't agree with killing animals just for the fur. But, there are practical purposes for real fur like quality paint brushes. Synthetic ones simply don't have the same qualities that natural fibers would.

My Uncle is a landlord paying off a mortgage on one investment property. All his money goes into an offset account linked to a high limit no fees credit card, so all his earnings are paying off the base amount of the loan but he can draw from the card/account for whatever he needs. Consequently, a lot of money goes in from his employer and tenants, and out for all bills and expenses. He's not rich, really more like middle class, but it would take him a while to notice a few hundred dollars being drawn out here and there in the sheer volume of transactions happening.
Also, some banks email out statements every few months, so if someone is, say, a little older and doesn't check their transactions online, it can take that long for them to notice.

2nd Case (Charlotte's story): For these cases, we have insurance in Germany, "private Haftpflichtversicherung," which is recommended to have. If the person ever destroys a possession of another person involuntarily, the insurance pays. If you don't have that insurance and refuse to pay, it's most likely the person will sue you (if it's very expensive).
So in Germany there are hardly people saying "well it's their own fault to own something expensive". The common rule is: You break it, you pay. 😅

Another German here - no, if you've caused damage to someone else's property on purpose then the insurance will not pay for it. Also, some people try to scam the insurances (neighbor or friend needs a new couch or whatever) - it's not that easy. And when your insurance does pay for damage you've caused unintentionally then your monthly fee will rise significantly.
I personally don't have this kind of insurance, nor do I know many people who do.

You have to fill out a paper where you explain what and how it happened. It's also demanded to send pictures as evidence. Usually, they cover it, if the story sounds plausible.
Some people use their insurance for fraud. If they catch you, you're in big trouble.
Fun fact: if you own a car it's mandatory to have a "haftpflichtversicherung" for your car, which pays in case you damage other's property/car. If you can't pay the monthly expense you can't have your car.

I just went to court because a cop gave me a ticket for not having insurance (I had insurance. It was just a cop trying to meet a quota). My case was immediately dismissed BUT there was a woman there for a DUI talking to the judge with AirPods in her ears and her phone in one hand 😂 the judge didn’t get mad at her, but it was crazy.

During lockdown, courts were still hearing and settling cases by using Zoom. There are several channels that post some really funny ones! The plaintiffs usually didn't understand that the same rules of decorum apply whether in the courtroom or interacting with the judge and attorneys online.
There's the one where a woman is taking a shower while waiting her turn on the docket, so when they called her case, she's standing nekkid in the shower! Her phone was positioned so we only saw her from her shoulders up, but still!

The comments too were wild w\some ppl saying courts shouldn't be allowed to hold u in contempt just bc u say something they don't like. I remember being distraught over some torn pages in a book that was loaned to me by a teacher that I didn't even like. She didn't like me. I didn't like her but she lent me her book. It was in Spanish, she was a spanish teacher and the pages got torn in my backpack. And I paid her the money to replace it. Because I knew that was the right thing to do. And I was in middle school and I didn't like her. So the fact that this 16 year old made the choice that she did is no excuse. Because she knew exactly what she was doing. She deserved the punishment that she got - no car, no social life for the rest of her school year - that's a big deal. Maybe now she will learn that her ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES.

My son with three friends caused $8000 in damage to a vehicle because they were mad at the driver for honking at them for being in the road. We made him quit football so that he had the time to work a job after school to pay us back the person we had to pay out. Two of the boys were brothers. They were to young to get a job
Their parents had them shoveling snow that winter and the $500 they usually spent on Christmas went to the debt. I kinda felt for them trying to figure out how a 15and 13 year old would pay them back. You cant get a job till 16 in Illinois. The last kid, well, nothing. His mother was a single parent and the least able to afford the expense. Yet she didn't do anything. He had a brother in jail already. The kid would be in his early 30s now. We moved so I don't know what happened to him. Also the other boys quit hanging with him because the cops told the other boys that when questioned he said, I don't know I was off riding on my own I did nothing. All the others owned up. I would guess he is hanging out with his bro, but, who knows.
In Mass 14 and 15 year olds can get dish washing positions at restaurants but that's it, everything else is 16+

I'm babysitting for my sister. she has a 4-month-old son and a 2-year son. So far I only babysat the baby for two weeks and the 2-year-old for a week. I wasn't thrilled to be babysitting because I have two daughters ages 4 and 2 and I am in online college. She told me she would put them in daycare when she could get vouchers. I was pleased to hear this because dealing with four kids and college daily is overwhelming. She brings up daycare here and there but hasn't heard back about the vouchers. Two days ago her son broke my kid's kitchen set door. It can be put back on but it's easy to come off now. I told her what he did and she told my kids they could come over and break some of his toys. She did not say sorry or offer to pay for the damages. This isn't even half of the problem. She knows how I am (I'm a people pleaser and I'm not proud of it) and I'm starting to be done dealing with her BS. My last straw is what happened today and that is me getting paid. She told me she would pay me either $150 or $200 for the baby if I have him without his brother, and $300 for both, I was ok with this. This morning she sent me $180. I was pissed I won't lie, so I calmed down and asked her about two hours later if the payment was for one week. She said no it was for two and she didn't get paid a lot. Now, I'm upset about what I was paid because watching after kids isn't easy but I was really mad because of the lack of communication. She didn't tell me anything until I texted her so I won't be babysitting for her anymore.

Good for you, get out of that now. I had something similar happen to me when I agreed to "babysit" a bunch of stray cats in our neighbourhood for a lady I met once and didn't really know. Big mistake. I assumed when she said 3 weeks that was it. But when someone is away and keeps telling you things happen (first a storm cancelling boats to come back, then an accident happening to her neighbor there so she couldn't leave) you start to doubt when they will be coming back. And stopping the feeding makes me feel like I am punishing the cats and not the person. Yet, if she doesn't come back soon I will have to stop because the cat food is running low. Breaks my heart but I have to keep in mind it is her who broke her promise. I kept mine. In your case the same. Sucks for her kids to have a mom like that but ultimately there is only so much you can do.
Your sister pays you to look after the children? Wow, we do it for free in our family because it's family.

And I'm not shocked the mom was so dismissive of her daughter's actions, it's clear she spoilers her and never holds her accountable for her actions. My mother was like this with my youngest sister, her "baby" ran wild every where getting into trouble with the school and getting arrested few times not to mention the he'll she put us through at home knowing she wouldn't get in trouble. It was always frustrating how my mom refused to see how horrible of a person my sister had become because of being spoiled. She got pregnant at 17 and was forced to grow up, now in her mid 30s with 4 kids 3 of them 13-17 yrs old giving her hell 😂😂 karma came around, always does.

Holy crap, I was not expecting these stories... it's funny how both in the end resolved when they informed people's significant others (son and BIL) 😆
