My mom is such a legend. She bought a house with an HOA and just said fuck it! And helped get my step dad to be president of the HOA. They are ACTUALLY decent people so that neighborhood is well off.
That's nice to hear. However, how have they made it so that the next people to run the HOA don't get power hungry? Does the neighborhood elect HOA board members? Is there a system of checks and balances in place? I'd say get this in writing, if it's not implemented already, to prevent their neighborhood from falling into an oligarchy-like hands again (for too long; impeachment procedures is good to have as well if deemed necessary).

I've heard of a story of a man being sentenced to a year in jail for not watering his lawn. This was in California during their drought. Not even reason and understandable changes in circumstances can save you from legally contracted obligations with the HOA. #BanHOA

@@CovensAgainstTheThrone Home Owners Association. They simply take your money if you don't follow the "neighborhood rules." There _can be_ extreme measures put into place where one or two families who profit most from them (i.e. the board) while pissing off the rest of the neighbors who cannot do anything legally speaking since they signed contractual agreements before acquiring their houses (unless you can find any loopholes or maybe get the neighbors to sign a petition of sorts to see positive changes).
This is a very simplistic summary mind you.

The car story is sad, he didnt really get revenge. The same outcome would have happened if he had just called the cops in the first place. When she stole his car, or when he was beat up. Reporting to his insurance it was stolen would have probably flat out gotten him a new car. I feel for him, he didn't get equal revenge like most people in these stories do, or get anything out of it

I have a dog that was abandoned so he has some aggression issues, but is super fun and nice to our family. He canât really go outside as he has problems with other dogs/people. We wanted to build a fence for him, so he can spend the last few years of his life outside, but our HOA doesnât allow fences.
That is one of the many reasons why I will never buy a home in an HOA community.
The thing is, an HOA, *isnât* bad, itâs the people on the board that are bad. HOAs exist to help and some people exploit their power. HOAs should be probably regulated, not made illegal.

Hit a real rough patch several years ago and a friend of an acquaintance so to speak offered to stash my car for me. It was a 1941 Chevrolet Deluxe and needed some minor repairs that I just couldn't afford at the time. Mechanic told me he could stash indefinitely and it wasn't in the way, he'd have it safely stashed for me just whenever I decided to get it back or get working on it. I left Texas to get my life together but did my best to stay in touch. Literally from the moment I handed the car over this guy has been impossible. He never answered or responded to my many calls and texts. I tried numerous times to get the car back. It's been 5 years now. He finally answered the phone about 6 months ago and wants thousands of dollars for storage and claims he can't get to it because it's locked in a past due storage. I don't believe he's even had the car for years. Probably parted it out. He's threatened to kill anyone who comes to pick it up. Apparently he's an alcoholic and has some serious issues. Anyway, I'm far removed from the situation and can't really deal with it. I'm choosing to just move on. I've made some mistakes for sure but I value my life and my progress and my real friends and family far more than any thing.

Let's just be honest people. HOA's, like HR's, are only ever noticed when they go bad. When they are good and run by good people nobody realizes they even exist. So of course all the stories we hear about HOA's are the ones that went bad. It's a case of having to be active enough to prevent or remove power trippers, such as OP did. And he did it within a year of moving in. Three cheers for OP!
I love our HOA. $200 a year, our neighborhood is kept looking very nice. Extremely kind forgiving people who run the HOA. When we had some unsavory things in our front area, I admit, and one of the board members said do not fine them, and came and spoke with us when we got it all taken care of. Our neighborhood stays nice the rules are not outlandish and I'm super happy to be in this neighborhood with HOA because I like being in a neighborhood that does have rules about not piling your front yard with garbage. Keeping your yard looking decent, nothing too over the top.
The HOA story is an extreme. My dad built a fence without the local HOA's permission, and he took it down with no fines. Not a word since.

First story: Good on OP for making people cautious of living under an HOA. This rude, self-important and bigoted neighbor didn't even care to introduce himself, and then proceeded to break several HOA rules in order to scoop a paycheck for himself. I'm not even surprised that the house price was fairly low, because all the previous occupants likely moved out for the same reason and the HOA board couldn't find any buyers - or it was a ruse set up by that opportunistic, rule-breaking neighbor. I think all HOA's everywhere should be sternly investigated for signs of extortion and fraud, and weed out all those who are found guilty.
Second story: It's all fun and games to steal the property of your supposed SO and have some burly thugs beat them up for trying to reclaim it, until the cops have physical evidence of you being the mastermind behind the crimes. I'm not even surprised that Morgan ratted out her whole simp squad, like the cheap Karen she is. She probably won't have any trouble at all making friends in prison, and hopefully not in the way she would expect.
Loved the second revenge story. You can't just steal someone's car and expect to get away with it.

Not ALL HOAs are bad, my brother and sister in law live in one and they love the area and people. Said everyone is really great and friendly there. So hopefully it works out for you lol.

I typically rehome them soon after but Iâve had special ones Iâve kept like my two tokay geckos and my Halloween moon crab, as well as some deformed fish like a danio that i had for a few months in its older age and a baby golden dojo loaches with a deformed head and spine. Luckily each got some friends since theyâre both schooling fish and the deformed loach is still doing well today and growing great. Just your usual typical pets I guess lol đ

And I get having a wide variety of not so common pets, I grew up with various snakes, fish, turtles, hedgehogs, chickens....I don't have the most unique set anymore, couple dogs, a guinea pig and a turtle I found in the back yard....So I've cut back over the years lol.
I live in an HOA thatâs incredible. The dues are a bit high, but I never get nasty letters. I never get harassed. They mow my yard and clear my driveway of snow. They actually put effort into keeping the neighborhood nice. Itâs a pretty good place to live.
My boyfriendâs parentsâ house has an HOA, which they have no problems with. The funds are used for upkeep for neighborhood parks, and for the public access pool and clubhouse. They are actually a really cool HOA who issue almost no fines unless itâs really bad. Despite all of this, I STILL donât want to buy a house with an HOA when we get married.
Our HOA is actually amazing! As long as you don't install a neon pink huge shed in your backyard, they're cool. All they care about is keeping the neighborhood healthy!
