  • This video tutorial is an introduction to SPSS software, especially for beginners who knows little or nothing about the SPSS Software. In this video, I concentrated on showing you how to enter data directly to the SPSS Data View workspace and how to use the file menu option to load in data saved in excel spreadsheet plus how to define the properties of the data variables.
    This video is an interesting one as it deals with the rudimentary knowledge of SPSS, including transitions and communication between the Data View window and Variable View window. Once you have learnt the content of this video, analyzing data using SPSS would become simpler for you. So, it is imperative that you see or watch this video to the end, as this is the first step in the use of SPSS for data analysis.
    SPSS is a statistical software for data analysis. It is an acronym which stands for “Statistical Package for the Social Sciences”. It was first packaged in 1968, but since it was acquired by IBM in 2009, it is no longer an acronym, but just a name. called “IBM®SPSS®Statistics”. However, regardless of the name change, the features and functions have remained unchanged.
    The most important variable properties in SPSS are "Name, Variable type, Label, Value label, and Measure" among others. In this video, all of these properties have been given detailed attentions and were described to the rudiments.

    Great Video! I'm actually conducting research on social media, more specifically on how online popularity is related with self-esteem. I'm measuring popularity simply as "the number of followers or subscribers". Based on the data I've obtained, I have devised 10 groups for categorizing my data as follows:
    Group 1 = 1 - 5000 ,
    Group 2= 5001-10K,
    Group 3 = 10,001-15K
    Group 4 = 15,001-20K
    Group 5 = 20,001-25K
    Group 6 = 25,001-30K
    Group 7 = 30,001 - 35K
    Group 8 = 35,001 - 40K
    Group 9 = 40,001 - 45 K and
    Group 10 = 45K or above
    The majority of the respondents fall in group 1 and 2, some fall in 3 and 4, while some fall in 9 and 10. My question is, how do I label them while entering my data in the SPSS as there are no responses for group 5, 6, 7, 8? Should I label the data all the way from 1 to 10 irrespective of the missing groups? or should I label group 9 and 10 as 5 and 6 to maintain continuity (1,2,3,4,5,6) in the SPSS labelling? Would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks!

    • @titocanimhansoloeva1341
      @titocanimhansoloeva1341 Před 2 lety +2

      Hi, Rosa, Thanks for this question and thanks for finding TMS the right channel for your question.
      You have ten groups and among the group, you have respondence for group 1 to group 4, and for group 9 and group 10. But, you do not have respondence for group 5, 6, 7 and 8.
      The way you can handle this depends on the structure of your research design, and you also have the liberty to label the values as you deem necessary.
      However, because you have respondence for group 9 and group 10, which include data points 40,001-45,000 and data point 45,000 and above, it is imperative that you give the "Value Label" all the way from 1 to 10 while you indicate columns in your data table where there is no respondence as "zeros". These zeros will be reflected in the statistical analysis and plots as groups where there are no respondence.
      For the benefit of many others who may have similar problem with their data, I shall produce a short video to demonstrate how to solve such problems. Please, subscribe to be notified.
      Thanks.

    Good day @Titocan. Thank you for your well-explained lecture on the introduction to SPSS.

      Thanks for your useful comment. An example of ordinal variable is Gender (Male and Female), ethnicity (Yoruba, Ibo and Hausa), colour (Black, White, Green, etc).
      Nominal variables are strong variables that can be quantified by assigning Numeric values to them for the purpose of analysis.
      Nominal variables are also categorical variables.

    • @TitocanMarkSolutions
      @TitocanMarkSolutions  Před rokem

      Hi Contessa,
      To remove a variable in a column from a set of data, click on the column header to highlight the entire column length. Then, right click on the highlighted column and from the drop down options, click in "CLEAR". This action removes the variable from the dataset However, to keep the delete permanent, you must "RE-SAVE" the file as a new file or as an old file to over-right the old name.
      I hope this explanation works. Thanks for supporting my channel.

    • @TitocanMarkSolutions
      @TitocanMarkSolutions  Před 11 měsíci

      If I understand your question very well...
      You probably didn't import the data as "Numeric". That means, you loaded your data into SPSS as Nominal or Ordinal variable, and if this is the case, the properties at the Data View will not change even after you have ascribed the Value Labelling. In this case, what you would need to do is to transform the data you loaded, or return to the excel spreadsheet and change all your variables to "Numeric Data" before loading it into SPSS
