One of the problems with bullying is that no parent wants to think their kid is a villain. They minimize and excuse terrible behavior and fight administrators who try to discipline their kids and enforce the existing rules. Parents of both the victims and bullies can be willfully blind to the warning signs because they don't want to see them.

And if you can see signs of your kid being a bully you have to notice and talk about it. You can’t keep excusing your child because you don’t want to believe there a bully. You go off of their actions.

I sincerely don't understand why people think this show is glorified. The suicide scene itself is one of the most difficult things I've ever watched, they don't make it look appealing. We see the effect it's had on her parents, on Clay - the devastation that those who were close to her feel is palpable. It also raises awareness to a whole host of prevalent issues and as this comment testifies, it instigates discussion. The programme is so incredibly emotive and for me I think they've done well to show how the smallest thing can affect someone, it makes us reconsider the way we treat others.

Ambir91 I think it has made people more open to express their thoughts, the show also displays how a lack of discussion/dialogue can be disastrous. Hannah felt she was alone, had no one to turn to as Mr Porter had let her down. Had he been more sensitive, and thoughtful, which would have represented progressive discussion then the outcome would have been different. I respect your view, but I disagree. It's essential that everyone feels they're able to vocalize they're feelings. Often people get the impression that their feelings aren't valid or they aren't allowed to feel sad. This needs to end everyone should be promoted to vocalize what's up and that they're not being dramatic.

Coming from a former suicidal person, this show did bring awareness but it also glorified it as well. Telling a suicidal person to "be strong" and "you're stronger than this" isn't enough at times really, all you can do is listen because just listening to them pour their hearts out and being there for them as a shoulder to cry on as well as getting into counseling can do so much. I can't tell you all how many kids I have saved in my short 18 years of life. Kids around my age that are going through it. They tell me they are tired of hearing those words and they just want someone to listen so please. absolutely agree. It is great that you've made parents to react to this. Of course there will be a lot of different opinions (even from parents) but it is so important to just have a few people thinking like that. Suicide, depression, anxiety, media and bullying and many more are problems. And we need to take an action, we need to at least talk about it.

  • @panicatthechemicallarrydis8543

I'm glad Suicide is being talked about again, and I hope parents discuss this show and I hope some teens realize that their actions and words do hurt people. Sadly in my school we don't talk about suicide.

My school just handed out papers to parents about the show. I read it and gave it to my mom to let her know about the show without me telling her. She said the complete opposite from these parents. She asked me if I had ever watched it and she seemed mad so I said no "good. don't ever watch it". I was so angry at her. She has always been too scared to talk about it. When my parents found out about my self harm, they were angry at me and basically told me I was an idiot for it. they never tried to help and even now they're just too scared to talk about it. but it's real and it's happening in your own city or state or even school and you can't run away from it no matter how hard you try

I've been suicidal at several points in my life. I've even attempted suicide. And I think the show did the opposite of glorifying suicide. It just pushed those thoughts even further away from me when seeing how it affected her parents. It helped me, because it really made me realise that suicide isn't an option. That it wrecks and havocs everything and everyone around you, especially your parents. So I really do not see how that is glorifying suicide.

I was bullied pretty badly when I was in middle school and high school and I can remember there were days that I cold couldn't get out of bed because I'd just cry and cry. I can relate to Hannah when she goes to the counselor because it happened to me. "Move on" "girls will be girls" "boys will be boys." And I can tell you I was suicidal almost my entire senior year.
People need to talk about this more. Bullying needs to be taken care of. Some people are born with thick skin and some aren't. It's awful to think that some people still think that bullying isn't a thing...

I actually read the book before I saw the Netflix series. I cried a lot. I don't see why people say this "glorifies" suicide. It's not doing that at all. It's respecting the subject and socially commentating on this kind of thing.

It's different for everyone, but some of the things they did talk about did glorify it. As in, People will miss you when you do it, people will regret what they did to you. It's not true. Suicide is never the answer and in order to prevent it we need communication and heart. Be heard and loved no matter what.
