- Britney Spears as Charity?!?
The classic 1960's musical Sweet Charity is beloved by Broadway buffs everywhere. Helmed by Bob Fosse for his wife and Broadway star Gwen Verdon, its history if full of fun tidbits to impress your friends with. So let's head to the Fandango Ballroom and discover 10 Things you May Not Know about Sweet Charity #Fun #Laughs #Goodtimes
Okay now I need a production of Sweet Charity with Britney as the lead.
Right?!? That would have been so amazing. But I guess it’s not too late…
A walking corporation.
Damn Britney’s career would’ve been sooo different had she got the role. Now I kinda want to live in a universe where all the ladies got a chance at that role.
Right?!? It would have been iconic.
Our Intermediate School choir sang a “slightly sanitized” version of “Rhythm of Life” for our end of the year concert. That was my introduction to the show. 😅
My *elementary school* choir did it EVERY YEAR 😳
I love it and I need a video stat! 😉
I remember Many many years ago a children's choir I was in sang that song. I Absoutly loved that song. It was not until a few years ago I realized what it was from and how innaprorate of a song for a children's choir to sing lol
@@Pogueconductor Fun fact,,,as a child, "Hey Big Spender' was considered an uber sexual song and for children to sing it was the ultimate swag song. At least in my family. It felt so risqué! Fast forward, I'm 62 now and finally watched this original in the movie with Bob Fosse's choreography. Now I see why!
omg mine too!! except I didnt know what show it was from and as I watched the movie, that scene unexpectedly came on I bursted into song and also realized the lyrics i remember were slightly off.....
Ok, I couldn't find the runtime of Sweet Charity, though Where Am I Going runs 2:20, I did find that, according to the book Big Deal: Bob Fosse and Dance in the American Musical by Kevin Winkler, Verdon sent that guy a check for 42 cents. 😁
Bless you for finding this!!!!!
This was great. One day I'd love to learn more about Anything Goes.
Re: Charnin and legal action. There was some litigation between Charnin and Fosse and Universal before the movie was made.
I knew most of this (not about Martin Charnin). Back in the day, NEWSWEEK and TIME used to have little filler items about Broadway shows, and I read in one of these that Gwen sent like 70 cents to the audience member who objected to her cutting a song.
I loved Season 2 of Schmigadoon and all the Sweet Chairty parodies!
Now, I know the history of Tina Turners "Private Dancer" was all about.
New to this channel and so far so good 😍
Actually, I won the part of momma brubeck in sweet charity, but at the same time, I won my audition for school to study musical 🎼 theater which I opted for because I was fresh from Jamaica and there was so much that I needed to learn. So God bless the sweet charity chorus but I did win a part.
This was a great video! I haven't ever seen/heard Sweet Charity but it's on my list!
Definitely check out the film version!! I'm a big fan.
You did amazing! As a musical nerd, I had never heard of sweet charity. Great to know not only the synopsis but also a bts breakdown also
I saw Charity in LA on its 2005 national tour with Molly Ringwald
Your editing is so fun
Thank you!! Not everyone enjoys it so I'm glad it works for you. ❤❤
I have, indeed, heard one of your stories before, although it took place some years after "Sweet Charity." During the Broadway run of "Chicago," Liza Minnelli replaced Gwen Verdon for a week or so while Gwen was recovering from complications due to inhaling a feather from a feather boa in the costumes. Amazing coincidence or what?
Yeah, poor Gwen and feathers just didn't get along!
Do it!! Drat the Cat!
Second!!
It may be coming sooner than you think....😉
I would love to know more about the musical Fanny that starred Florence Henderson.
That IS bad ass!
Right?!
Nights of Cabiria is so good.
I'd love to hear you tackle Finnean's Rainbow, with all it's now-taboo parts :)
Hmm. Interesting. I'll add it to the list!. Thanks for watching!
@@broadwaybyghostlight Would help if I gave you the correct spelling: Finian's Rainbow
Haha, I knew what you meant.
Fun fact,,,as a child, "Hey Big Spender' was considered an uber sexual song and for children to sing it was the ultimate swag song. At least in my family. It felt so risqué! Fast forward, I'm 62 now and finally watched this original in the movie with Bob Fosse's choreography. Now I see why! Anyway, I searched for more versions and found the one with Carol Burnett...and it's rated for kids on youtube!!! It is not very sexual. But still I found that funny. I don't think many parents would hesitate to let their kids watch the Bob Fosse one. Times have changed...kids are taught swag now. And not in a good way IMHO. Let kids be kids. I also am a touch disturbed when aa kid plays or sings "Girls Like You'' (Maroon Five) cause they sing about pot ('roll that backwood, babe"). That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.
My fav singer who sings "Hey Big Spender'' is Shirley Bassey.
Missing fact- Carolyn Leigh was originally supposed to write the lyrics for Coleman's music. Fosse had problems working with Leigh on Little Me and would not consider working with her again. Another great female lyricist was hired, Dorothy Fields.
Definitely do Drat!
I just might 😉
Would love to know more about Prettybelle which never actually made it to Broadway…
Ooh! That's a good one! I will definitely add that to the short list.
@@broadwaybyghostlight I have the cast recoding which I believe was done several years after the fact - it’s interesting and kinda wild!
Pretty belle has a great score but the storyline of therapeutic rape sure has to be scrapped ! The York Theater in nyc does concert versions of old shows andI kept suggesting that this be one of them !
Boffo! How about "The Pajama Game" ?
What was the ticket price, runtime of the show, and duration of the number in question? The math is easy if you know those variables!
Hahaha. I will get all those facts to you cause I'm dying to know!
OLIVER!
If you do Drat the Cat, does that mean we have to hear LAW sing? Then, yeah, no thank you.
Hahaha. Noted.
You forgot to mention the movie had an alternative happy ending.
I was not amused by verdon's response to the guy who complained about her cutting the song. What if it was his favorite song? She should have chipped a few extra bucks for pain and suffering.
Britney as Charity when?! 😱💙
Right?! I want it NOW!
I was enjoying the actual information but unfortunately the frequent cutaway clips were distracting
