    Oh gosh.. I am so heartbroken. I woke up this morning and thought it was curious that my Jane Birkin video had a spike in views and comments but thought nothing of it until I saw the first “RIP” and my heart sank. I didn’t believe the commenter at first. And immediately opened Google, only to confirm the heartbreak.
    I’m not one to usually feel attached to celebrities, but Jane is one of the exceptions for me. She has been an influence of mine since I was a young teen, as i express in this video, and so in many ways I feel as though I’ve carried her essence with me from girlhood to womanhood, as many women and girls have.
    I wanted to reiterate a quote I mentioned in this video by Jane on death: “We are all a little scared of death when we feel it approaching. The idea is so distant, so abstract. We have trouble imagining it. Over the last three years, I have come close to it twice, and, surprisingly, I didn’t panic. I was more frightened of not having time to say what I wanted to say, to leave things in order, to be forgiven.”
    Thank you to everyone who is coming to my video to pay respects to a wonderful woman, and honour her legacy together.💖
    Rest in Peace lovely Jane.

I'm now 38 and the happiest I've ever been. of course youll miss the magical 20s, and have moments of half exciting and half stomach dropping moments...but your 30s and 40s are filled with a beautiful sense of content that cannot be described as anything other than otherworldly. :)

      I was the same way. Terrified of turning 30. I think I spent my entire 29th year in a state of existential dread. But now that I’m in my 30s, I wish I could tell my past self that everything will be okay. I am more confident and self assured now vs. my 20s. I’m not as critical of myself and I don’t accept shitty treatment from people like I did in my teens and 20s. It sucks that women are made to feel like their lives are over or they’re old before they are even middle aged. The older I get, the more I unpack the things that I was told to want or value and try to figure out what I actually want from my life. I didn’t even figure out I didn’t want to have bio kids until I was in my 30s. I feel like I’m just figuring out who I am vs. who I thought I should be.

    • @heucatia
      @heucatia Před rokem +27

      I could not miss my 20s if I cared. I was totally miserable then, broke, lost, constantly heartbroken, incredibly noive, had no idea what to do with my life or myself, didn’t even want to be in this world 60% of the time. I am 42 now, look better than I did then and feel like am only now starting to live my life as I’m supposed to. Have finally found my research topic after having just published this book, straight on applied for a financed PhD and got in. My life is only starting now, everything else before was just practice and most of it was bad too. My entire life I could feel, I just knew, that I was a scientist, but because I didn’t yet know what my research topic was I spent decades going from meaningless job to meaningless job just to make ends meet, and being miserable. Stopped dating almost a decade ago because when you are lost you only attract toxic, the absolute worst for your life. So yeah y’all can keep your twenties and thirties, cause my 40s are when I am starting. Still have a lot to heal from the past two decades, but I feel like finally being able to do what I love for a living will really help with that. Look better than ever too, still have the same body I had at 19 because I never had children, and have always looked younger than my age. I look at people in their 20s now and can only hope that they are better prepared for life than I was at that age, but I’m not sure that that’s always the case. See all these young girls trying to go the easy route with only fans pages, not considering how much they will most probably regret it in a few years time. At least my 20s mistakes are not plastered all over the web forever for everybody to see. Most people in their 20s have no idea who they are. The search is harder for some than for others. For me it was hell, and I’m glad that that’s over. Never looking back. Here’s to being 42 and being able to finally be me, totally and unconditionally.

    Her Vogue 2019 interview is my absolute favorite. I feel like what makes me love Jane Birkin even more is her honesty about her feelings and her vulnerability. She isn't afraid to say that she's sensitive and easily cries, or how jealous she would get. I think it's also interesting how we view her as this icon when she always downplays herself or would compare herself to other women of the time such as Bridgette Bardot. Even with her relationship with Serge, I thought it was interesting how she described how insecure her and Serge would get when it came to their looks.

    Rest in peace Jane B. She kissed me on the cheek on New Year’s Eve, before covid in London. Truly a kind lady.
    It was at the standard hotel she was doing the New Year’s Eve countdown and I was working the door for the upstairs restaurant. I sneaked up from downstairs to listen to her sound check and the countdown. I snuck out to the roof about 30 minutes after midnight and bumped into her on the narrow staircase, my fur coat and basket in hand. She recognised me and my proudly engaging hanging off of her soft voice on the mic. Indeed my knowing all the words, amongst a tightly packed albeit a somewhat awkward fashion-conscious crowd.
    I didn’t even have to say anything she said happy new year and grabbed me for a hug, her eyes lit up. Gave me a loving kiss on each cheek looked me in the eyes and said “Ah! Thank you ! “
    I will never forget it, her, that immediate unbounded kindness and warm embrace. She could tell I was, without words, even as only briefly being able to be there for the whole set (as I was working the door, downstairs). She silently acknowledged so gracefully my reverence and appreciation for her presence and body of work.
    R. I . P jane birkin.

    There's such a distinct philosophy behind her beauty and essence which captivates most. I love how her meaning behind beauty only matured with grace as she aged. So inspiring considering this time of anti-aging against women pushed by the majority of beauty corporation and main media. We all need a little Birkin in us

      I agree completely!! Some of her statements felt healing haha. I feel similarly about Audrey Hepburn’s sentiments on ageing, when asked in her later years if she wanted her wrinkles photoshopped she said “Don’t you dare touch any one of those wrinkles, I earned every single one of them.”

    I wish I had discovered Jane Birkin in when I was a teenager. We had a very similar body type and I was incredibly insecure and bullied in a similar fashion . Her confidence was such an inspiration especially because she had to develop it. Some people seem to be born with natural confidence and for others it doesn’t come easily. Jane Birkin was an icon and an artist. She will be sorely missed.

    I have received a few very rude comments on my pronunciation of some French phrases. If you are being kind and offering a correction of the phrase, that is very much welcomed, and I thank those of you who offered corrections with kindness!
    But I will not tolerate being belittled or disrespected. I have studied French, I have spent time in France with little problem communicating. I am aware that my French is far from perfect. But if you are commenting something snarky such as “it takes one second to Google a phrase” you are making a rude assumption about me. I googled every phrase to try and double check the pronunciation and ensure I said it correctly, I do this with all words of all languages that I am unsure of in my videos. Though as I am making this on my own and French is not my first language I am of course bound to make mistakes. Someone commented that I was being “disrespectful to the French langage” which is rather ironic when Jane Birkin herself was famously bad at French when she first rose to fame in France and she herself is quoted in this video stating she made little effort to improve it in her youth! Additionally, making earnest mistakes in a language is FAR from disrespectful. I would never dream of belittling someone for speaking imperfect English. I get incredibly nervous speaking French, and I tried my best. Because of my nerves surrounding the language I wasn’t going to even put the original French phrases in at all, but I decided to try and step outside of my comfort zone and try. Though next time I will likely just put the English translations.
    If you are incapable of being kind in your correction and instead opt to make a rude comment about this you will be blocked from my channel.

    I knew absolutely nothing about Jane Birkin before watching this-I didn’t even know the Birkin bag was inspired by her! I really love her comments on getting older; I’m 41, and the advent of social media has really made me super self conscious about aging. I spent my teens & 20s reveling in male attention, because it made me feel validated. In my 30s, the attention slowed down. Or maybe I just didn’t pay attention to it like I once did. I absolutely dressed for the male gaze, and wouldn’t even go get gas w/o a full face of makeup. Now, I wear minimal makeup and dress for myself, and comfort. But I do feel that endless pressure all women feel, to magically stop aging & look forever 18. Social media really, REALLY makes me fear aging as I never did before. It’s so refreshing to hear a woman embrace it, and lean into it & all the good things that it also brings. No, I don’t look like a baby faced high schooler anymore, but I do feel more like my true, authentic self than ever before.

    I'm french, so first i'm sorry for my english (btw your french accent is cute, don't let others bully you ;)).
    I have a bit of a problem with the way the lovestory with Gainsbourng is romanticized. He was a horrible person, groomed a lot of girls, was borderline p*dophile & abusive.
    There's a song by him where you hear a women crying. Here's the story behind this : Jane just had a bad phone call, locked herself in the studio where he was working and cried a lot. Hearing that, he thought it was perfect for his new song, so he secretly recorded her, and put it in the song, without telling her. Don't tell me this is not abusive...
    And there's a lot of story like this on that guy. So... maybe she really loved him, but he wasn't the perfect husband at all, and I'm sad she never realised that...
    (Another story I hate, but not about Jane : he wrote a song for France Gall, "Annie aime les sucettes". She was 18 when she interpreted it and didn't understand it was highly sexual... but it was a good laugh for Gainsbourg... When France Gall realised what she had sung, she was really embarrased... you can imagine the effect on a young girl singing that in 1966... I'm sorry for the long post, but I really hate how toxic he was with girls and women...)

      That "sexy" photo shoot where it looks like he's slapping Jane around gives me chills. Maybe it was consensual and all, but it looks like the usual mid-20th century abuse passed off as sexual liberation.

      @cassaleelee Před 10 měsíci +14

      While I agree with you that by all accounts, Gainsboirg was abusive and into young girls, perception is reality. If Birkin absorbed more positive reinforcement than negative, then the reality, for her, is that it was good. When the bad outweighed the good, she left. She was not a helpless victim, and eloquently explains what the earlier days of the relationship brought her, and helped her to blossom and become herself. Life can be quite complicated. I understand her sentiments and decisions, and I respected her. I'll miss her.

I had three daughters as well and lost my middle one at age 41 a couple of years ago. I remember being in Europe the summer of 69 and her hit song J'taime moi non plus"! She also reminded me a bit of British model Jean Shrimpton in the late 60s/early 70s, long straight hair with bangs , doe eyes and pouty full lips! It’s sad that in 2023 we still look on this romance through romantic lens, I see here a classic using of a young insecure girl by a adult man who didn’t know what it means to love... does society still approve of this?

      @The night porter I didn’t insist that he was bad guy, but as adult person I can understand I that this isn’t an fair union, it’s one person patronizing another, molding her as he wants, the girl herself said that she had low self-esteem at the time, it’s a good base for such relationship, in such an unequal union that psychological dependence often arises

    The video is awesome, I dare to say that I diverge with Jane about the 40s, I've seen a lot of women be incredibly beautiful at this age, I also think you shouldn't give up on something because of it, I think it's like saying "I'm whatever years old, so I can't be happy anymore" honestly, I think Jane was a bit depressed but maybe she wouldn't admit it. She will always be a style icon for me, though.

      Yes I agree! I found many of her sentiments surrounding ageing very profound, but I agree women are often still incredibly beautiful as they age, and still look wonderful if they decide to wear makeup and dresses and get all dolled up. I mean look at Dita Von Teese who’s 50 and still as feminine and striking as ever in her extravagant outfits, hair, makeup.

    I’ve enjoyed your video very much. In it, you’ve documented what in my opinion is THE most important understanding about beauty and women. A beautiful woman is not defined by a pretty face nor some perceived perfection of her body measurements. A beautiful woman will always be defined by her own embrace and acceptance of herself. Yes, Jane Birkin has more than a few physical characteristics that make her sexy and attractive. But the allure of a beautiful woman will always rest with her own view of herself. This healthy view of herself is her well. And from her well comes her kindness, her critical thinking, her lust, her creative expression, and yes, her love. I am a 63 year old man. Across my life, I fell in love with a more than a few women who, at the time, I felt did not really see themselves nor truly appreciate their own beauty. It’s funny, as a man who was in love with them, my words seemed to be the least convincing in changing how they viewed themselves. But across time and through their own processing and experiences, to see a woman come into her own is such a wonderful thing to witness.

I don't understand her fascination with Gainsburg, I had never seen their "erotic" photos, I think they're violent, misogynistic, cliche and frankly awful. I love the way Jane wears denim and that iconic sheer black dress, and I think small boobs are very youthful and elegant, she's a very classy woman and her daughters Charlotte and Lou are so stylish too.
