  • Ann Reinking and Bebe Neuwirth had already co-starred on Broadway in "Sweet Charity" and "Chicago" when, in the spring of 2001, they co-starred once again by joining the 1999 Best Musical Tony winner, "Fosse." Reinking was co-conceiver/co-choreographer/co-director of the show, and this would be Reinking's last Broadway appearance. Included here are "Mein Herr," "Steam Heat," "Dancing in the Dark" and more.

I was lucky enough to work with Ann. She was one of the most gracious, humble and kindest person I have ever worked with. I invited her to come to Duke University, where I was guest directing a muscial, to do a master class> We had 300 people come take the class and she made everyone feel so wonderful and worthy to be there. Ann's performance in Mein Herr brilliantly conveys the intention of the choreographer! Instead of a stylistic interpretation of Fosse, which is difficult in itself, she goes deeper, and for the first time I am moved and shaken by this piece, instead of only pleased by Fosse's obvious mastery of choreography. Brava!

How did I miss this? I’m a Fosse aficionado! I’m a Northern California and San Francisco bay area that is and I travel to Los Angeles to see Fosse’s during out of town tryouts. Then I went to New York that December inside in previews. I had so many preconceive notion‘s about which should’ve been in the show and how to show should’ve worked that although I cherished it I didn’t love it wholeheartedly. Watching this I get a new angle for example I never really liked Valerie Pettiford in her role as sort of the shows Grande Dame! Reinking here knocks the same number Mein Herr our of the Park. But that Cool Hand Luke! WowZie! I am a choreographer and I have restaged this choreography more than once of course I’m not Fosse trained per se but I’m known for making the audience Fosse converts. I like to think I bring great care to the work. I’ve also done steam heat with that when I had some of my own flair but it’s pretty faithful! But these two in Cool Hand Luke are just jaw-dropping!

Well, here we go: 1: Bebe Neuwirth "Steam Heat" - Her hat was a little bit too big, and the part with the rolling down with her hat did not work. But: she is 100% professional and knows how to deal with it and : 2. The song was too high for her, with Meg Gillentine one hears the right pitch from the song. But again: Bebe did it wonderfully. 3: Ann Reinking "Cool Hand Luke"- it uses to be a terzet, what happened? only two on the stage ? OK, OK the two on the stage are Bebe and Ann, makes sense :-)))) 4: "There'll Be Some Changes Made" - Nice to see Rachelle Rak there, and who ist the second background performer? 5 - Again an octave lower as original ( watch with Dana Moore in the main rolle). I saw Ann Reinking in "A Chorus Line" at the Pantages in Los Angeles in 1976 or 1977. All I could think through the whole performance was, "Please, Somebody pull her hair out of her face!". There is not one dance teacher that did not constantly emphasize the importance of having one's hair out of one's face during a performance. I am not kidding. Her hair was parted down the middle and was always covering her face. Very distracting. Was she shy? I don't think so! I had seen Donna McKechnie on Broadway.
