  • Welcome back to ANCIENT NEWS with James Fleischmann of the ANCIENT BEAT Newsletter (ancientbeat.substack.com/)!
This week: Confirmation of the Louisiana State University mounds in Baton Rouge as the oldest structures in the Americas! Cantre'r Gwaelod (AKA the “Welsh Atlantis”) is a legendary lost kingdom which may have been rediscovered beneath the waters of Cardigan Bay! Was Crete conquered by the Mycenaeans or does new tool and artifact evidence point to a more integrated and peaceful co-existence? Bosque de Chapultepec in Mexico has long been known for its historical importance, but new ceramic and lithic findings extend the date of the site back 3000 years! And in ancient Patagonia, a wampo canoe burial has been discovered that is the first in South America, indicating that burial practices may be more universal than thought!
These are just five of the many stories that James has curated for your educational enjoyment. Do him a favor and SUBSCRIBE (ancientbeat.substack.com/) to Ancient Beat now!

I live near the Etowah mounds in Georgia, and after climbing the main one multiple times I'm firmly convinced that they were an early version of the stair-master...

Hello 👋 neighbor!!!! I live east of Cartersville in Waleska which is just 10 miles northwest of Canton. I’ve visited the mounds a couple of times and found them interesting.
Good to see a fellow Georgia resident.

@@mercedes523 goodness, we really are neighbors! I'm about 20 minutes northeast of Canton in the Nelson/Tate area.
Local custom requires me to mention our Etowah Pink marble at this point, and recommend that you visit the Tate House and tour the quarry museum. 🙂
If you see a tall, middle aged gal walking around in the Sea Peoples Mediterranean Tour shirt (and probably talking to herself), please say hello! 😀

I spent the summer of 1968, as an 8-year old, with my family in Mexico City. It was wonderful, we saw the Aztec central plaza, where the later Spanish cathedral was built, the amazing archaeological museum, Chapultepec Palace from the Napoleonic area, and most importantly, the nearby pyramid complex of Teotihuacan, where traces of the original paint could still be seen in the shady nooks I explored. What an amazing civilization the Aztecs had! We terminated our stay a little early because of the big earthquake and joined my grandparents, who were staying in San Miguel de Allende, a gorgeous colonial town.

The 'Atlantis of Wales' isn't anything to do with the mythological Atlantis, DW, it's a legendary area which was kept safe from the tides by one 'lock/gate/barrier', which was supposedly the responsibility of one person, who, for one reason or another (not taking the legend for granted) neglected his duties and accidentally allowed the tide in, which engulfed the area in a night.

This is cool. I became a physicist, but when I first went to uni I planned to become an ancient Roman historian. I even did a related degree. I've kept the interest in history. If that weren't enough, one of my professors was an Etruscan archaeologist who loved her subject.

The talking over the guest with that cathedral story was kind of rude. Like he kept trying to explain something while you talked over him.

For the first third, James from Ancient Beat spoke sooo softly, mumbling, not looking up from his page, like he just woke up. And he just kept going on and on, talking over you as if he couldn't hear you. Maybe you can give him some tips on how to project his voice, not mumble and maybe bring his mike a little closer. Glad I stuck with it, the rest of the video was very interesting.

I'm hoping it was poor editing or some miscommunication, but I did not like hearing the host talk over his guest like that.

17:15 your contemporary geopolitical takes are horribly under-informed and propaganda heavy. Stick to your area of expertise.
