    I bought the lens following this video. Thanks! All you said is spot on. One Thing I am very impressed with is the metal lens hood. Fujifilm should take note. The Viltrox 23mm lens hood is beautiful, high quality engineering. It is lightweight metal, super fine finished and it fits to the lens securely with a surgical 'click'. It is a well machined quality tool.
    I've just spent £1,200 British Pounds on the Fujifilm 50-140mm f2.8 and it is an excellent lens, but the supplied hood is absolute pants. It is a plastic floppy fit piece of ill-fitting junk compared to Viltrox hood. I think that Viltrox could make an absolute killing if they manufactured replacement metal hoods (of the quality they supply with their 23mm) for the whole range of Fujifilm X-Mount lenses. I'd pre-order now if they were to be available.

    I just bought this lens and uysed it on my xt3 to shoot in low light in downtown last night. A lot of my pics turned out fuzzy but that's because I was shooting moving subjects 30 yards away with ISO at 1250. But the good pics I got were awesome. There was some CA around the street lamp halos at wide open, but knocked down to 1.8 eliminated any fringing. I'm stoked about this lens.

    I bought the X-Pro1 and a XF 35 1.4 just for fun and was blown away.
    Then I tried the Canon FD 50 1.4 and it’s amazing as well.
    They I started to invest in primes: I bought an XF 16 2.8 and now the Viltrox 23 1.4.
    Now I have an awesome kit!

    I was happy with the lens until I installed the new firmware AF 23/1.4 XF V1.1.2. Now I have the problem that the lens causes the camera to restart every second. I tried it with the X-T1 and the X-H1 (the AF 23/1.4. does cause the problem, other lenses from fujinon do not). I had the firmware V1.0.9 before and the lens worked fine (some time the autofocus blocked - this was the reason for installing the new firmware). I tried to restore the old version - I now have still the problem. The lens causes always the camara to reset, there is no way to get the “old” lens back. Is there a way to reset all stored firmware?

    Absolutely Amazing lens! I just did some resolution nit-picking on this 23mm Viltrox lens vs my 16-80mm Fuji zoom lens and the Viltrox blows it away. I know its a prime vs a zoom but the difference is substantial! I'm glad I bought the Viltrox.

    Thanks for another in-depth review. I have been adapting the sigma 18-35mm F1.8 on my X-T2 and it replaced my 23mm F2 but I miss having a small lens that isn't twice as heavy as the body. This is a great price point to offer a more functional alternative to the 18-35 for my kit and the image quality and AF don't disappoint at all.

    • @k1ng92
      @k1ng92 Před 4 lety +2

      @@johnallan9548 Hey John, its tough to recommend for or against. I guess starting out the most obvious cons are weight and af noise. having a +900G lens isn't awful but when its adapted and hung farther away from the body it works against the ergonomics even more and I need to use a grip to be able to still hold my camera comfortably (also know you will need a beefy gimbal to run this) but the added weight actually works great if your goal is to rig up your camera (it adds so much dead weight just the lens and a top handle stabilizes quite a bit) and the other thing to consider is the AF noise might be picked up even with a shotgun mic placed on camera (the af basically overpowers what the internal mics pick up) so off-camera audio is pretty important for interviews or long talking segments with this.
      as for why I still use it after months and many other lenses (16-80 F4, 23 F1.4, 23 F2, 35 F2, and the kit lens are what I've owned and sold from fuji) is that the image quality is clinical which allows me to really boost anything in the image without it getting muddy as quickly. having F1.8 in a zoom range that covers several primes with comparable or superior image quality is great and enough reason for me to hold onto it.
      my goal is to get the 33mm F1.4 from viltrox and if the AF and image quality are good enough I'm either going to shelf the Sigma just for more professional work or sell it entirely and pick up the 23mm F1.4 as well. for roughly the same price you only get 2 focal lengths, but you get 2/3's of a stop of light as well as a much more discreet and travel-friendly option.

    something to note about the Click Less Aperture is that the aperture blades are not smooth b/c they are controlled electronically by the camera. • @malcolmanderson8339
      @malcolmanderson8339 Před 4 lety +1

      @@theadventurenomads7011 So for Photography it's spot on for everything you could possibly need, you may want to correct some color fringing and decrease vignetting in post, but that's very easy. For Video is also works very well. Auto focus works great, I would recommend getting a variable ND filter for it though cause the aperture ring kinda jumps in lighting, although they possibly could fix that with a firmware update in the future. I definitely think the lens is worth the money, I recommended it to a couple of my friends who all shoot fuji, but it still has to pass the test of time. But it's a very pleasant and sharp lens, I really enjoy the image and video quality.

  • @Justmakesomenoiz

    Hi it might be a stupid question. But I've been a A7III shooter and mainly used Sigma 35/1.4 art for all my pics. I know u can't compare my upcoming X-T3 with the Sony but would it be fair to say that this viltrox is as sharp as the Sigma or is it significant worse in sharpness. Beacuse I want to find the best 23mm for my XT-3 camera.

    • @16-bit-trip5
      @16-bit-trip5 Před 4 lety +1

      The Sigma is probably sharper but not significantly so. Of course I'd expect it to be better.
      I've owned both the 23mm f2 (for sale) and 23mm f/1.4 (sold) Fuji lenses and, while I don't have the 23mm Viltrox, I have the 33mm Viltrox. The 23mm f/1.4 Fuji was my favorite lens when I owned it but the downside was that the AF was loud and slower. I sold it when I moved away from Fuji for a couple years. I just bought back into the Fuji system recently and picked up a 23mm F2 when I did. That lens was smaller, lighter, had weAther sealing, and had much better AF but, while the IQ was good, it didn't have that magic the 1.4 had.
      From all accounts so far the Viltrox is like a combo of the two with a couple of its own quirks. The build quality is nice but below both the Fujis. The AF is on par with the F2 and much better than the Fuji 1.4. Size wise it fits between both.
      The click-less aperture ring is not the best and the fact that the aperture transitions are smooth kind of defeat the purpose of having a click-less ring in the first place.
      So what's the best 23mm? From a practical standpoint the Viltrox is probably the best buy as it's the least expensive, has great AF, has solid IQ, and is relatively compact and light. If you want the most compact package or need weather sealing then the F2 is the winner. The Fuji 1.4 is not a bad buy if price is not a major consideration but just note it's AF is loud and slower than the other two. It does have great IQ , good build quality, and the best manual focus implementation.

    And the primes.. I want nice shallow DOF which the 33mm can probably provide better than the 23mm, but the 33mm is very limiting while traveling. With the 23mm I can just leave it on and it will be good (focal length wise) for most shots.

There are more than one video talking about that. I was going to buy this lens before stumbling on those videos. Well, I trust you and I think that you would have detected this issue in your sample, and if you didn't, it's because it has not that issue. That clickless aperture is a deal breaker. Its not even suited for video cause its still electronically controlled and does not close smoothly but rather in increments as if it was clicked aperture. What the hell was Viltrox thinking here... what is the point of clickless if theres no smooth blade control. (see 'Ian Worth' review how aperture behaves on this lens). Also, corner bokeh quality on XF is miles better.
