Thanks for watching!
Wow, this is so good. Great review man! For the first time in the history of me watching YT reviews, I wasn't annoyed with anything. You have a very pleasant delivery, a subtle but pleasant sense of humour, easy on the eyes. Very professional.
Accurate and unbiased review, well organised. Thanks.
Great Review! Thanks, I didn't even know this lens existed but I will check it out.
Nice review Christopher, keep up the good work
nice work, Chris, keep it up
Great review, man.
Makes me WANT this lens :)
I use it for stills on my Fujifilm camera, and it is awesome. Purple fringin in high contrast situations wide open can be worked around.
holy crap. this is awesome.
genuine outro (and review) 👍
A very good lens for video. Mine rides on a gimbal most of the time. Good show! Cheers
I picked up this lens recently for $217, brand-new, and it has been dominating the time on my camera body. I think it's an awesome lens, tons of character, obviously fast, and so for the price, you can't beat it, to have a 35 mm equivalent on an a6400. Just awesome, so happy with it.
Do you find any barrel distortion on portraits?
@@FOOKyourFEELINGS i’ve moved onto a completely different camera and system, but I’ll tell you that that was my favorite lens when I was using the Sony a6400. I didn’t notice any distortion at all, at least not that would really bothered me, but I haven’t used it in a very long time.

Thanks 👍🏻
I’ll definitely take a look at it based purely on the low price. Good concise review.
Thank you, im getting it
Great review as always! I guess that the lens has not OIS, right? Also, what the hunting going on in the background at, for example, 6:52? Anyway, for that price seems a great lens.
They chose 23mm because Sigma trio of 16mm/30mm/56mm is missing the 23mm. 16/23/30/56 roughly translates to 24/35/50/85 on full frame. Why sigma didn't do 23mm for APS-C is beyond me. Why Sony and Canon EF-M doesn't produce these primes is also beyond me. But Viltrox 23 + Sigma primes give you a complete prime set for APS-C at $400 for each. That is SO MUCH CHEAPER than the full frame primes for the Sony FE and Canon RF mounts.
Sony released the 24mm F1.8 ZA way back in 2011.
Holy smoke, 1100 bucks
Canon 22 mm efm...
Video was suggested to me. Turned out to be a great one. Subbed.
Well I love hearing that! Welcome to the channel I hope you enjoy your stay!
Viltrox lenses are really good from all my testing. I have the 56mm Viltrox which I love, I would've gotten the 23mm and 35mm but I have both focal lengths in the Fuji primes which are slightly better. I'm waiting to get the Viltrox AF 13mm f/1.4 lens when that comes out next month.
Great video
Great image samples.
Thanks!
love 35mm look, might get it someday for a6300+gimbal
Well now I want this!
Good price just for you lol
If you keep the aperture ring on A(auto) only goes to f/2. Gotta manually set it to f1.4 on the aperture ring.
Thanks! Good for gimbal usage since it's lighter than the Sigma 16mm!
Good point!
good fair review
Very nice B-roll!
Do you rely only on the IBIS of the a6500 or do you use a gimbal?
I didn't use a gimbal for any of the shots. 120fps slowed down to reduce visible shake.
For the price of a Fuji 56 F1.2, one could get a trio of Viltrox 23, 33, 85. What’s not to like?
How does it compare to Sigma 30mm f1.4 APSC optically? Sounds like these have much more CA.
This lens it i shoot with zv e10 in the video quality is there any issue vignette (sides blacks from the corners) ?
do you think this lens will be better vs sigma 16mm on a Sony a6400 as one and only lens for vlogging + some Instagram portrait photos?
Nice video bro. Please review sigma 50-100 f1.8 on video and photography whit Sony a6500. Thx
They choose that focal length because it's very close to the typical 35mm-50mm-75mm line up, and because people are more likely to buy it if it's not the exact same focal length that they already own. The lens is awesome relative to its cost. Instead of complaining about the shortcomings go pay four times more of the highest end lenses because you get what you pay for.
Would be difficult to beat 16mm f/1.4. I also like the Sony 28mm f/2 FE lens.
I'm enjoying this lens very much.
What about those chromatic Aberations. Everyone is saying that Sigmas are better but I really like the focal length. I am confused. Please share your experience in detail with this lense.
Cool lens.
Fringing looks really close to the one found on the native Sony 35 F1.8 lens when wide open.
Nice to see an aperture ring - especially declicked for the video-people out there.
Have you pushed it through some Astro-Photography or have the ability to get some images? Would like to see how it turns out with the fringing.
My Samyang 12mm is mighty fine but sometimes I feel it could be a tiny tack sharper. Maybe some competition is creeping up here :)
Oh that's a good idea. Need to get out to some dark places and give it a try!
Thank you very much, Christopher. Can you tell me what the distance is between you and the lens in you talking head video shot. Also, how far away is the wall behind you? Thanks a bunch.
Probably between 2 and 3 feet and the back wall is about 6-8 feet away
Versus with sigma 16mm f1.4? Which one is better?
To sony A6xxx series Apsc sensor
Does it make noise when focusing?, is it mark I or mark Ii version?
Can I use it on Canon M series with Viltrox speed booster?
ive been looking for a 23mm... but from your pics idk, it doesnt seem to be anywhere even close to sigma lenses, at the same pricetag =/
It's about focal range. At 23mm there is no anything for that price range. Zeiss 24 f1.8 costs 1000, and gmaster 24 f1.4 twice more)
Viltrox is competing against Samyang/Rokinon and looks like they have been getting some pretty good reviews lately.
They have some Full Frame lenses too
samyang lenses perform a lot better than this viltrox .. but they are getting there
23 is the equivalent of 35mm full frame, its not a wierd focal. cheers!
Tks for the video !
By the way which body do You prefere and use the most now? APSC or Full Frame. Thanks
I use FF the most because of the lower noise at higher iso levels, just gives me a little more iq. And the battery life is a lot better too.
@@ChristopherBurress ok thanks
Thanks for the review! The one thing i´m asking myself is:
Should i go for the sigma 16mm or the viltrox 23 mm for filming? what do u think?
(i already own the sony 50mm 1,8; sony 18-105 f4) - so im looking more for a wide angle lens with a low apeture...what woud you think? sigma 16 or viltrox 23?
I think the sigma. It's a little bit of a better lens all around and it's got the wider fov that you are currently lacking.
@@ChristopherBurress thank u very much for your quick response! best regards from austria :) saw your salzburg vlog - i live there :)
Can I use it on my Sony A58?
Hi Is this lens good enough, in Low light movie shooting ? (Playing Dj festivals ) at night , Thanks for help
It is about as bright as lenses come so I think it should work
For photo vigneting or not ?
Hows the chromatic abberation in fotos and vdo ?
*Comment* because it helps the channel.
Vs sigma 16mm pls
I have been wanting this focal length for a while for my a6400 I will have to try it, and for 300 bucks yes, I have no idea why sony or sigma haven't done this hmmm sigma has the 16(24) and 30(50) but man 35 man.....
I really enjoyed shooting with it, I think the closest thing sony has is the 20mm 2.8 which isn't very good at all.
@@ChristopherBurress yes I think I am going with this, thanks man
If you can live with a smaller aperture, Samyang has the tiny Samyang AF 24 mm F2.8 FE for a really good price. 2 stops difference though.
Is this bad for shooting talking head videos in small spaces? I bought 85mm and it was too tight. I had to put the camera as far across the room as possible and still couldn’t get all of me in frame
I shot the whole talking head portion of this video with the Viltrox, I think it would work perfectly for your use case.
Best Review!which sharper/better between viltrox and sigma 30mm f1.4?
From what ì have seen from sigma lenses the 30mm probably wins
@@ChristopherBurress oh i see, so sigma 30 was better..thank you, i will go for sigma then. Subscribed!
Have you noticed it misses focus sometimes? some owners experience this.
I mentioned that in the video. It's weird how it's only occasional, I think lower light makes it worse
Would you recommend this over the sigma 30mm?
I don't think so. Sigma makes remarkable lenses and I've heard great things about the 30mm.
Hi there, what mic did you use for this review?
Probably the Rhode video micro that's my go to. And it's cheap. But there is a chance I used the Comica STM01 which is far more expensive but ultra crispy.
The Ring vor the apretur in Not Close and dont stay
3.44 minutes of attention. The biggest flaw of this lens. But I perceived as if you didn't want to show this flaw?
I've seen examples of this elsewhere.
You are focusing on an object in front. Then you suddenly want to focus on an object behind. In this case, Viltrox cannot quickly focus on the object behind. It provides full focus in 2 steps. Or it is focusing incorrectly. This is also in your video, but it goes by very quickly. A good person sees this detail. When he suddenly focuses on the rear, he cannot focus correctly. Even if it does, it focuses in 2 stages.
I think it should have been mentioned.
Viltrox provides silent focus in video shooting. But the focus performance is thought-provoking.
But apart from that, the photo and bokeh quality is great. I liked the photo quality very much. The video performance is thought-provoking.
In your opinion, is this lens slightly better than the Sony Carl Zeiss 24mm 1.8?
The zeiss is probably better
@@ChristopherBurress okay thank you!
@@ChristopherBurress in this video, what was the kelvin temperature & brightness % using your Falcon Eyes RX-12T?
i hope coming indonesia
Is the shots color graded ?
Some of them are some of them aren't. Raw images look flat and dull and that's not representative of what the lens is capable of.
Do i need an adapter for my canon m50?
It won’t work as it’s built for mirrorless already and doesn’t have the flange depth needed for an adapter
This works for the apc-s, M50. There’s a few on the market, just have to ensure to get the correct one. The one for the M50 is usually silver.
Not bad this lens, hmm
The fringing is really needed to be accounted for overall composition. The hue is distracting.
Which pictures are you referring to specifically? I would like to take a closer look.
Music is horrible, but great review and beautiful footage
Thanks for the feedback, music can be challenging, glad you liked the footage!
How about the Viltrox 33mm f / 1.4 lens
Hope to get my hands on more soon!
Took me about 15 seconds to be very distracted by the vignetting. Bleah.
Street photography
Well, For that price i will go for sigma 16mm 1.4 or 30 mm 1.4
well, 30mm may be too narrow for crop while 16mm may be too wide 23mm (35mm in reality) seems like a perfect option
Para vídeo hace mucho ruido no vale 👍
The fringing seems pretty bad.
CA is horrible wide open.
0:51 when I hear Viltrox I think of Ben10
i hope coming indonesia
