Everyone HATES Rudy Gobert! But Why...???

  • Getting wiped by 18 on their home floor, the frustration is obvious for Joel Embiid who doesn’t get the call here, as he shouldn’t in my opinion and runs back with the sole intention of stopping the play so that he can berate the referee and earn himself a technical foul.
Embiid takes it personal when it comes to Rudy Gobert, and when he wins like last year, he goes in the media and fires away.
But this season Rudy came out as the winner both times, and last night he had 17 points and 21 rebounds. All that while playing back to back after blowing out the Timberwolves in their own arena as well.
And what’s funny is that Patrick Beverley and Anthony Edwards had the face to talk about how Gobert is not really a defensive threat and not a good player, moments after losing to him and his team by 32 points. That’s hilarious. Just listen to them.
I mean look. There’s 1 thing for him to have a bad matchup in a playoff series like he had against the Clippers last year, where it was obvious that his effectiveness was minimized. But to say that he doesn’t take on a defensive challenge, or that Kristaps Porzingis of all players is a better rim protector than Gobert, that's ridiculous.
You cannot compare their presence in the paint by any means.
Rudy Gobert has more 20+ rebound games than under 10 rebound games. And that is astonishing. Look at these numbers, they tell the whole story.
The Jazz led by him and especially Donovan Mitchell on the offensive end, have been blazing hot winning 6 straight and 8 out of the last 10 games.
The analysts over at nba.com are taking notice of this combination of team success and individual greatness so in the fresh new MVP rankings that they put out, Gobert found himself very high on that list. At the number 6 spot.
So while opposing players love to hate on him, he’s getting the credit from the analysts and the support from his teammates. Most notably from Donovan Mitchell who hyped him up yesterday after a foul was called on Gobert in this matchup against Embiid.
Mitchell and Rudy had an infamous fallout just as the virus hit and many people were saying that their relationship is beyond repair.
So it’s been great to see them 2 this season back to how they were, and this is why this seemingly small and insignificant clip of Donovan clapping for Rudy was meaningful in my opinion. Spida knew that this was a special night and a special matchup for the big man, going against his rival, so he wanted to support. And to me, you only do that if you’re cool with your teammate.
So while everyone talks about Golden State and Phoenix, the Jazz are sneakily only 3 games behind the number 1 spot in the league. They’ve basically been playing at that pace and kept themselves within striking distance despite nobody mentioning him, and despite people throwing shade about 1 of their most important players on the team.
This is a clutch year for them tho, they need to finally make a serious playoff push after many successful regular seasons followed by early playoff exits. Let’s see if they can do it.
That’s it for now, subscribe and talk to you in the next one. Peace out.

Gobert changes the way the game is played by his mere presence on the floor. Offenses have to routinely deviate back out from their drives to the basket or they look for a second option at midrange or for 3 when he's underneath. There's not another player in the league that alters the game defensively like he does. Just looking at any defensive chart he's always the leagues anomaly. Anyone saying he's not the best defensive player better start reviewing tape. It's not even up for a debate.

@@hardwoodgems That's exactly right. It's no coincidence that Utah designed a system to be the best perimeter shooting team. They've essentially dared the rest of the league to beat them at their own game knowing gobert is down low to punish them if they try anything else. Utah picking up Rudy Gay in the off season will help with their perimeter defense so Gobert doesn't have to roam out as often. They just need one more perimeter defender by the trade deadline and they should be set for a deep finals push.

Okay yes, Gobert is a great defender hell even the best defender in the current era if you put it into trophy perspective, 3DPOYs. What makes ppl so mad or hate him(besides ofcourse some casuals who just go on with the flow) is that, while he is a great defender, he's also a massive defensive liability on the perimeter.
Considering that the NBA right now or has been for the past 6 or 7 yrs, have been playing Small Ball Lineups and Perimeter Shooting has been the go to, he also needs to be able to run with faster guards or better yet be able to defend them.
What I think made Rudy win those DPOYs (besides the 1st one, think he deserved it that year because no one even came close to his impact), but like he would have all of the defensive winshares, impact and whatnot because if the perimeter defender just manages to let his opponent drive into or even close to the rim, Rudy would be there to block or just intimidate.
