Ferenc Puskás scores 4 goals in the European Cup final | Real Madrid vs Eintracht Frankfurt

  • When Puskás joined Real in 1958 he did so as a shadow of the Galloping Major of the Mighty Magyars, one of the greatest national teams to ever grace a pitch. Puskas had let himself go somewhat. "I can't play, I'm too fat," he told his Real suitor, Santiago Bernabeu. Real signed him anyway.
His four goals in the final were like salt rubbed into a wound in more ways than one. Six years before, after his Hungary team had lost the World Cup final to West Germany, he had accused his opponents of doping. Even though he later retracted the comments, he wasn't forgiven.
The German football authorities banned any of their sides from playing against a team with Puskas in it. The Hungarian had to make a formal apology before the final went ahead. That's where his contrition ended. His four goals brought his European Cup tally to 12 for the season. When he finished his time in Madrid, he had 240 goals in 260 games.
Real's short passing networks did for Eintracht. They knew of Puskas' ruthlessness but couldn't shut him down. They knew of the burning pace of Gento on one side and the exquisite, and almost forgotten, Brazilian Canario on the other but couldn't hold them back. They knew what Del Sol could do but his rapid movement was too much for them.

That probably was the best European Cup Final ever. DiStefano and Puskas were out of this world, and that Real Madrid was the best club team ever. As I recall, they won five finals in a row. I was fortunate to see that game, so that means I am very old! :)

Jxxn Rxxi yes you are right and spot on.The best ever European Cup final that took place at Hampden Park in the evening on 18 May 1960 that's sixty two years ago.
I was just sixteen days old when the famed all white striped of Real Madrid clashed with West Germany's Einthracht Frankfurt in that memorable 1960 European Cup which produced no less than ten goals.Till to date the highest ever scoring margin in an European Cup final.
That 1960 European Cup final broke many record.First,it still has the highest attendance for a European Cup final with more than 135,000 spectators and Hampden Park had the honour to host it.
Secondly,so far no European Cup final or after that the Champions League Cup final have produced many goals as that of the 1960 final. The 1962 final at the Olympic Stadium Amsterdam came closest but it only produced eight goals.
Thirdly, incredible as it may seem two players scored hattricks in a European Cup final with Ference Puskas scoring four and Alfredo di Stefano three in Real Madrid's 7-3 win over Einthracht Frankfurt in the 1960 final. It is feat that until now is yet to be matched.
Lastly,we have Francisco Gento winning a record fifth successive European Cup final winners medal which to date was and is still a record. To add further Paco Gento would win his sixth European Cup final winners medal in 1966 when Real Madrid beat Partisan Belgrade 2-1 in the final and that until now is still another formidable record to match. So far no player have come closed to matching or equalled the sixth European Cup championship wins by Francisco Gento.
Yes,Real Madrid were at their zenith in 1960.Apart from winning their fifth successive European Cup at Hampden Park,Real too won the Intercontinental Cup the same year beating Uruguay's Penarol 5-1 on aggregate in a two legged final.

@@jxxnrxxi2160 even Didi a member of Brazil's 1958 World Cup winning team came with a high reputation when he played for Real Madrid. But his tenure with Real was relatively short lived as he played something like 19 matches and he quit Real in January 1960.He was often relegated to the substitute bench and didn't get along well with Alfredo diStefano.

Yes that memorable and unforgettable 1960 European Cup final between Real Madrid and Einthracht Frankfurt at Hampden Park Glasgow on 18 May 1960 serves to remind us what a truly outstanding team Real had been for five years
That 7-3 trouncing of Einthracht Frankfurt was indeed a climaxed to all the previous four Real's European Cup triumphs from 1956 to 1959.And Real were at their zenith and height of powers with that mauling of Einthract.
But Einthracht was not mere pushovers as this German club had defeated Glasgow Rangers of Scotland by a 12-4 aggregate in the two leg semifinals.
In the final itself Ference Puskas scored four goals including a penalty whereas the Argentinian Alfredo di Stefano three. Two players scoring hattricks in an European Cup final and that is unthinkable.
Two years later Puskas also set another record which still stands scoring another hat-trick but still Real still ended 5-3 losers to Benfica in the 1962 final at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam. For the record,Puskas is still the only player to score two hattricks in two European Cup finals.

@@ColumbiaB believe me, I didn't want to do this effect on my own) CZcams's detection algorithm and copyright issues are a very weird thing - they'll catch the footage and then you'll have a chance to appeal it to the copyright holder.

Joking aside though, Puskás at Real Madrid was way past his peak and if you want to look at the best version of him, search for the games from mid-50's (there's a full game against England from 1953, 1954 World Cup highlights and quite a lot different footage of that Hungarian team).
