  • California has some ambitious zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) goals with some high estimates expecting 8,000,000 ZEVs by 2030. But what are the roadblocks and challenges in the way? And what can be done to overcome them? With the help of Anna Reich @theannareich, I discuss three major roadblocks to California ZEV’s future and what California and consumers can do to help get there.

Do you think e-bikes/cargo e-bikes are a viable and more scalable solution to reducing VMTs and meeting emission reduction goals?

E-bikes/cargo bikes will definitely be more effective than driving an EV in reducing VMTs and meeting emission goals. In terms of scalability, improved bike infrastructure will be needed and ultimately a culture that wants to use bikes more in transportation, which I think we are still very far away from. Another challenge is supply chains. Like EVs, increasing e-bike production also has had issues recently, so that would also be a significant challenge to scalability. But I still think e-bikes are changing the bike industry much like EVs will change the car industry. So they are kind of happening in parallel.
