I’m not religious, but the hospitaler’s take on religion is my favourite one so far. Its so simple and humble yet, at least to me, feels like it encompasses the core foundation most religions were aiming for.

Im Catholic and I've seen the lunacy of my fellow Christians
It became the breeding ground of zealots
Religion was meant to be a road to bring the people into God's grace but some people are gatekeepers😂😂

Weirdly, I actually base my personal morality on that idea. Holiness is in right action….what an idea.
Man may stumble and fail, we all do. No one person is perfect. But if we do not set out to harm another intentionally, at least without damn good reason, then I hope that if God exists, that my actions are enough to show that on a whole, I’m a good person.
And if God is too mecurial, and wishes I did more harm to those who deserve it? If I’m expected to take a wrong moral action for a holy reward later in the afterlife?
Then He either is not God, capable of great mercy towards those that wrong Him…..
Or He isn’t worthy of the worship of Mankind, and sees as playthings.
Do no harm. Protect the innocent. Do the right thing, if you can. Be honest.
It’s a much simpler aspiration, and much better overall, then zealotry.

This conversation is about sin and a misinterpretation of the teachings if I am right. Gods grace is forgiving sin, and, "being a good man... or not" means nothing without believing in the father and the son. We will sin, but we must decide, if we are to be closer to god. The belief in both father and son is grace enough, but we must never stop striving to be good and sacrifice for those that cannot protect themselves, because "all death is certain" the final words spoken and the completion of the teachings.

And completed by The king's words: "None us know our end realy. Or what hand might guide us there. "
Good works don't get you into Heaven. Only faith can save you, followed by a change of character to be more like Jesus.
So repent people. Jesus loves you and wants to save you.
The end is near. As much as I fear it, and try to forget about it, I can't deny it.

Titus 2:11-12 Not by our own actions and deeds, not by our laws or acts of man, but by the grace of god, no one person can claim their own righteousness. We are doomed to death, but we should live now in the present and strive to be as we will in eternal life after... or not 🙂

@@jeremyforeman3216 This is a very vague question for youtube comments and not something that would be easily answered in the format. I'll just keep my response within the context of the original clip here and do my best to keep it breif. ---- Note that the Hospitaller speaks of "Religion" in general and the acts done not just in the name of Chrisianity, but questioning where acts in the name of any higher being come from (acts from nothing are moot in this context). That fundamental question followed by a brief definition of what god desires in goodness. Grace is helping others and in this time period especially protecting and safeguarding the weak. Then the two key beliefs in Christianity for understanding grace. God desires you to know him, and that he sent his only son to die on the cross for your sins. Self sacrifice for others even ones own life is the highest form of love. Those two are key as you see when the Hospitaller points at his head and the cross (it's important to believe this). The choice to be good despite knowing you are saved or not will still not save you from death. Our fate has already been sealed and we must live as mortals to be good or not, religion doesn't make you a good person. You can wear the clothes act in the name of god, but without knowing the most important points, Jesus is god, and he was the final sacrifice for our protection, you will not see the deeper meaning. It's important to know these things and strive to help people to see gods grace. When good people help us, it's fate, but also something deep ingrained in where goodness comes from. The Hospitaller is holding in a chuckle almost amused with what he hears, while Balian is struggling to see how good he is and how he has helped others. (He's expected to see a reflection of these beliefs or any explanation for his loss, remember the beginning of the movie). Sorry for the long reply, but you asked a complicated question.

@@irpwellyn I would push back on that a little, what is the New Testament if not Christ raging against the religiosity and decadence of “the church” while telling his followers to do good and to love and be of service? I think the film attempts to deconstruct the very human flaws of ‘organized religion’ and how in that structure people who claim to believe in one thing can in fact be doing the polar opposite without realizing because they are following blind dogma of humans. That’s at least how I always saw this scene.

Monk, not a priest. Seems very odd for a Hospitaller to have such a negative view on religion considering the vows he's taken, and everything that he's given up in order to live a pure spiritual life.

    • @hawkshot867

There's a theory he's an angelic messenger sent to guide the protagonist, but the conflict between "religion" (as he put it) and "being a good man" is the central theme of the movie. A lot of the Christian authorities in the film are selfish or amoral, whereas the main cast and protagonists are more grounded and trying to leave the world a better place. If you notice the Muslim characters mirror this - they hint that they have similar struggles within their faith over this, but the primary characters who are Muslim are all extremely likeable, even Saladin. I'd hesitate to even label him the primary antagonist... It's more Guy and Reynald (who are both Templars).
It's a brilliant film that was ruined by its theatrical version cutting out like 70% of the themes in favor of being a big action movie.

@hawkshot867 if you follow the "Hollywood formula" it has designations for hero and villain, but also protagonists and antagonists. In this movie the hero and protagonist are the same, I would say the villain is Guy but with the formulas definition of Antagonist being the person the protagonist has to overcome to achieve his goals there's honestly several antagonists, including good characters that tempt him to lower his morals for different spoilery reasons. Really great movie with lots of complex motivations for different people
