    The Sound Devices MixPre-10T has the added benefit of balanced XLR outputs which make it more convenient to connect powered monitors/speakers with balanced inputs. On the flip side, the MixPre-10T cannot be powered via USB. My preferred method to power the 10T when using it as an audio interface is to use an AC to hirose adapter (linked below).
    TA3-F to XLR-M Adapter Cable: bhpho.to/2hCXkLL
    Balanced XLR Cable (if your monitors have balanced XLR inputs): bhpho.to/2D6ELWr
    Balanced XLR to 1/4" TRS Cable (if your monitors have balanced 1/4" inputs): bhpho.to/2CDQqLd
    AC to Hirose adapter to power the MixPre-10T (does not work with MP3 or 6): bhpho.to/2D39G67
    ASIO Drivers for Windows (so that you can use all of the MixPre-10T's inputs): www.sounddevic....
    Drivers are NOT needed for MacOS as the MixPres are CoreAudio compatible.

    How i connect my 833 SD to my macbook to use it as an audio interface with Cubase? I need to record a channel through the 833 preamps and I think i miss the internal routing of 833

      Hi Siddarmark, I use the MixPre10T on my PC and just set it up as an output device for the first time. Two notes. Note #1 - In order to hear the computer's sound output in headphones connected to my MixPre10T headphone out, I selected track 1, then I selected Input, then under Input, I selected "USB 1".. Note #2 I am able to use the MixPre 10T as a PC audio interface using just a USB Type C to USB Type A cable. The USB Type C end is connected to my MixPre 10T and the USB Type A end is connected to my PC. I tested with a USB Type C to USB Type C cable (USB C on both ends) and did not find any difference in quality as compared to using a USB C to USB A cable. As fyi, the MixPre 10T is being powered over AC. All the best -George

    Curtis - I have a question on the Mixpre3 II powering it as a USB interface. If I get one of those hirose sleds for the rear and power it up using a battery or AC adapter plugged into the sled, will only one USB-C to USB-A cable be sufficient. I did not get the cable that splits to 2 USB-A's
    just like anyone else.

    • @curtisjudd

      If your computer has USB-C inputs you'll probably just need a single USB-C cable for power and data. But if not, yes, your proposed solution should work.

    Hi Curtis. I have a question that I couldn't find an answer to that. I have a pair of Presonus Eris 3.5 (which has 1/4 TRS inputs) and old Sound Devices Mixpre-D. I want to use it as an audio interface. After plugging the USB cable into the PC, which output should I connect to the loudspeakers for the best quality? XLR output to balanced 1/4 TRS input of the speaker? If so, should I connect both of them separately? Lastly, how should I control the audio level? I'll be appreciated if you answer. Thank you so much.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd Před rokem

      I assume you're using powered speakers? The MixPre-D cannot power speakers on its own. Yes, the XLR outputs will deliver a balanced signal to powered speakers and should produce quality audio. So if your speakers have 1/4" balanced inputs, then you'll need two XLR female to 1/4" TRS balanced cables. 👍

    Hi Curtis, thank you again for everything you teach me! How can I send the audio (preferably a mix of multiple track, or at least two tracks) from MixPre 10-II to my video camera with 2 XLR inputs? And if 2 of these TAS-3-F to XLR-Ms are the solution, should I set the camera inputs to Line level or Mic level?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Nosrat, yes, you'll need TA3 to full size XLR adapter cable and yes, you set the camera's input to line level. You'll also want to calibrate the levels between the MixPre and camera using tone on the MixPre. We cover these details in my MixPre course over at School.LearnLightAndSound.com. Best wishes!

    It's really possible to use the MP10II as an Interface on a computer without USB C?! A simple USB C -> USB A cable is the solution? (of course, with the external power). Could you give a link to this kind of cable, please? All I/Os or just 2/2?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd Před 4 lety

      Yes, the USB interface is USB 2.0 even though it uses a type C connector on the MixPre. A standard USB-A to USB-C cable does the job: amzn.to/3fjk5gF

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd Před 6 lety

    • @cupakm
      @cupakm Před 6 lety

      Thanks for your answer. Let me please clarify my previous question.
      Each time Zoom F4 or F8 gets connected through USB it asks whether to act as an audio interface or mass storage. Having to choose this every time you power up your computer or connect the device isn't practical. My question is how MixPre behaves in this manner.

    • @LearnLightAndSoundSessions
      @LearnLightAndSoundSessions  Před 6 lety

      It is a little better than the F8 in that once you change the settings to work as an audio interface, those settings are there next time you turn it on. However, if you reconfigure it while field recording (e.g., outputs in particular), then you have to change them back again next time you use it as an audio interface.
      On the F8, you have to go to the USB menu and change the F8 into audio interface mode every time. No so with the MixPre.

    No digital outputs to Pro Audio like AES/EBU or SPDIF? That would not be good. What battery system do you recommend for 8 hour recording? I have a 12V battery. Would that connect to Hirosi or other DC in? It’s the old EcoCharge 12V with 4pin XLR but I get custom cable made. It’s old school but never failed me. And dual
    Output with meters. Have you ever used the Tascam P82?

    • @LearnLightAndSoundSessions
      @LearnLightAndSoundSessions  Před 6 lety

      Hi OPUS Digital Audio, correct, the MixPre-3, 6, 10 series do not offer digital output. You'd need to go with the MixPre-D or 6xx series for AES digital output.
      For longer shoots I use an Anton Bauer Digital 90 and d-tap to 4 pin hirose cable. For most of my shoots up to about 8 hours, I use the NP-F battery sled and 2+ of the larger NP-F batteries (970): bhpho.to/2DfDNHq
      I have never actually laid hands on the P82 though it has always intrigued me. Would be great to see Tascam update it.

      Curtis Judd Audio I just 5 minutes ago purchased the Tascam. They did just update it (firmware and software). If you want, I have 30 days with it....I can send it to you if you will do a comparison video? I’m thinking about getting a MixPre 10 in hand for an upcoming venue so I may compare it musically. I’m not sure I made the right choice but the Tascam has features I need (a lock to prevent accidents or interference in a live venue) and AES/EBU to interface with the thousands of dollars in older gear. I have never been a fan of SD preamps for music - harsh if not brittle - and the music examples sent to me from SD demonstrated the same characteristics. I’m a fan of Apogee and Nagra preamps and converters. In any case, the perfect unit is not yet here but the MixPre 10 for video has the edge. Would love to send it to you if you are willing to compare it.

I use these for tracking (recording) my saxophones, percussion, and drum kit, and for mixing duties in all genres of music.
      If you have the budget, I highly recommend the ATC SCM25A PRO monitors. ;)

      +Curtis Judd Audio - Two questions:
      1. Are there built-in -10dB or -20dB attenuation ''Pads'' available on each of the 8 microphone preamps?
      2. When using the 1/4'' TRS Line Level Inputs on the 8 combi-jacks, does the Line Level Signal completely bypass the microphone Preamp Circuitry??? Or does the Line Level signal pass through the mic preamp circuitry + an attenuation circuit?
      Thanks for your time and interest. The MixPre 10T looks like a fantastic device.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd Před 6 lety

      Hi Guin, no, it is USB 2.0. The latency is pretty good even over USB 2.0 so I'm guessing that the additional cost that Thunderbolt 3 would have added probably overrode any benefits. In my tests latency was 6ms, which is already quite good. You can see all the details over on my full review of the 10T: czcams.com/video/LgRdT8gsfIs/video.html
