- The Nerd finds out what it's like to play the Virtual Boy, by trying out some games on it. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 42.
Keep your eye doctor on speed-dial, because this time, the Nerd's tackling the Virtual Boy! Released in July of 1995 by Nintendo, this "portable" console was touted as being able to display "true 3D graphics" and deliver a truly unique gaming experience. Indeed, the experience was unique, but primarily because the games were projected in bright red directly into gamer's retinas. Did I mention that a side-effect of the Virtual Boy was potential eye-bleeding? The sheer weight of the device and lack of any sort of head-strap also prevented it from being remotely portable. Truly a shame, given how fashionable this massive red pair of binoculars on a tripod is.
So what kind of gaming catalog can be expected of such a "unique" contraption? You'll be hard-pressed to tell all 12 of them apart, because no matter which game you choose, all you'll be seeing is red. Good thing the Nerd's got glasses, or else he'd really be screwed!

Do not get me wrong, I both love and appreciate that the Nerd is still strong to this day. I love the changes he’s gone through, but nothing will ever beat this level of content. Without doubt this is his prime. Kudos for giving me a great childhood/adolescence

I remember trying out Virtual Boy at a Toys R Us display. Even then I knew it wasn't going to survive, the goggles-on-a-stand design was ridiculous.

TheGreatYukon True, the progression of technology and how cheap it gets over time shouldn't be doubted. I still worry though about the audience VR is being introduced to though. Better LCD TVs had to of had people interested from the get go since it was an upgrade from CRT, but I'm not sure if a VR headset is really the same idea and has the same people interested in it.
FrankyManky Sure, I can see how the interest is less. And, the scale in price is also less. There are monitors that cost $600, and even a decent one is around $250. That's not that much more. So it seems fair to me

Wario Land VB is the only game on Virtual Boy that is actually really great. Not enough to save the system though, because it’s only 1 of 22 games that is great.
Hey James if you see this I just wanna thank you for making my childhood great and memorable I remember getting back from elementary believe it or not I would just laugh and watch your videos. Coming back to it now is just so nostalgic
I just tried a Virtual Boy emulator on my Rift CV1.
It's... surprisingly playable...
if I could only get it to recognize my controller.
The emulator I found has both standard head-locked 3D and an experimental "immersive" mode. The former simulates the basic way Virtual Boy played back in the day just like if you strapped a virtual boy to your head. No head-tracking or anything. The latter puts the graphics on a sort of holographic plane in front of you so you can move around it somewhat. It's like having a giant red tinted 3DS screen in mid air in front of you. I recommend trying out Immersive Mode because it solves some of the main issues of movement-based headaches.
I guess they went for the strap-less design on the original because if you played it with a strap without the necessary head-tracking while feeding your brain sensory input that you are moving physically in one way and "virtually" in another... you end up with nausea. Having it on a stand on a table eliminated that part somewhat at least... and most LED's were tinted red at the time. That's what happens when you have to produce VR-tech with mid-nineties tech and price-expactations

Ah, yes, the mid 90s. It was so exciting being a kid back then. The successes of the 16-bit consoles made us all look toward the future with hope. The gaming industry started to take off for real, and it was like we all knew that bigger and better things were coming. Those truly were the golden years and i feel both proud and extremely privileged to have grown up during that time. :)

Actuually, most likely! The hype of VR with more and more games coming out, seems like *now* is the most interest while it's fairly fresh, thay finally got down the technology (for the most part), so I can easily imagine it dying down, quieting down after a decade. Unless I'm missing some potential BREAKTHROUGH - wouldn't that be cool... :P
