  • Finally found the time to unveil my latest joint creation, a tier 1 design based around the mighty Grixis Commander, Kess, Dissident Mage. In this video, I take a deep dive into the deck’s contents, analyzing many of the individual card choices. The video is quite long, but if you’re a fan of this archetype you may find it worth the time. I’ll be posting online Kess games soon. Comments and feedback are always welcome, enjoy!

    Enjoyed every single minute of the deck tech. I appreciate how you go in depth on some of the card choices, lines of play and even history of the cards. Fire//Ice has become one of my favourite cards for its flexibility. I‘m sure you‘re aware of it, but I figured I might mention that you can use Ice to tap Winter Orb at EOT and just timewalk your tapped out opponents. I understand that Orb is not central to this deck, however I also like playing Whir of Invention in Orb decks for the same reason. Faithless Looting and Intuition might also be worth considering? Looking forward to online gameplay videos of Kess in the future!

      So glad you enjoyed it! I'm definitely aware of the trick with Fire/Ice on Winter Orb, I'm always on the lookout for that or an EOT bounce with Cryptic Command. I love Whir in my Nin deck, it's just a bit tricky to cast the card in a 3-color Grixis design. Intuition is a card I hadn't considered, it may be worth running. Stay tuned for some Kess videos soon!

    Awesome Deck tech. Thank you for taking the time to go over your card stories and share some of your opinions. I really enjoyed your thoughts and perspective.
    Concerning your musings on cycling Mystic Sanctuary. If the game grinds to the point where bouncing Sanctuary with Cryptic would be on the table, you can also just Wasteland your own Sanctuary and replay it with Crucible. Yes, it's a turn slower, but it doesn't cost you four mana and you can save your Kess "flashback" for the turn on another line of play.
    I'm going to have to invest in MTGO I guess, I'd love the chance to play some games against you!

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman  Před 3 lety

      So glad you enjoyed it, and that's a very valid idea to recycle the Sanctuary. Looping Sanctuary has never even come up as an option in any games I've played, so I suspect it's all moot anyway. If you do wind up playing MTGO, make sure to find me! My account name is Brian Weissman, and I'm on pretty frequently.

    Indeed I like the talisman more than signet as they are good on aboard against opponent's LD strategy. The Talisman of Creativity and even the Talisman of Indulgence seems playable in this deck.
    Plus Lim dum's vault and Tainted Pact can be more appealing choices compared with some blue functional tutors imo.

    Have you considered adding Dockside Extortionist, Remora and Rhystic Study? What are your thoughts on cutting Crucible of Worlds in order to run a more disruptive card such as Blood Moon or Back to Basics?

      Dockside, Remora, and Rhystic are definitely favored in multiplayer formats, but this deck is tuned for 1v1. Blood Moon and Back to Basics are a bit more fair and hurt you just as much, where as crucible extends your hand allowing you to fetch more lands by playing from graveyard, and eventually cutting off a color or two from your opponent with strip mine wasteland.

      @Thebrianweissman  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the kind comments Bruno. Rodrigo answered your inquiry quite well, your suggestions are more germane to multiplayer. I don't think I'd ever run Blood Moon or Back to Basics, as I only have a single basic land in the deck.

    Interesting build, see the truth was a cool tech card for Kess. I'm surprised to see you don't run demonic consultation/Thassa's oracle in Kess considering consultation find's oracle then you can replay it from your graveyard for the win. A 4 mana investment (BBUU) to net a win requiring only one card (Demonic Consultation) seems really good to not include if you're playing competitively.

      @Brian Weissman my thoughts exactly. Luckily my playgroup has a nice rule "your budget should not effect your ability to build a deck. If you gotta proxy, go for it." and since I'm working on a Kess deck (why else did I end up here, lol) so, while I can't run this at my LGS for all the uh, many proxies I would need, my personal playgroup round the table will see how I adapt this into my own playstyle.

Would you ever be interested in posting top a top x cards printed for EDH. or if it would better suit you top x cards ever? EDH seems more resonable since other videos of top 100 (which you were in) has already been done. Id like your insight on stuff like that. maybe a commander list and then a non commander list. heck maybe a list of every card type in magic for EDH would be awsome!

    Please sort your cards by function rather than converted mana cost. It is far better to visualize your ratios and balance that way.
    Sure, there are modal spells which are more difficult to classify, but it should be easy enough to show the most common use, and potentially stack it near the next pile where it also fits as a transitional card from one part of the deck to the next. For example, Izzet Charm would have been a perfect way to go from counters to removal like Lightning Bolt. Another example is Tezzeret. While it has other abilities, we all know that it is a tutor first and foremost. It could be a great transition from tutors to your mana rocks and then into you mana base.
    I love listening to your insight, and I think it could be delivered even better by having the deck better organized by function.

    I am sorry Brian, but this deck is NOT legal in duel Commander, and it is NOT built for multiplayer. You play in a bubble of Magic online duels. Meanwhile, in paper magic, there is a bannlist and rules for duels which you are not following.

    • @Thebrianweissman
      @Thebrianweissman  Před 3 lety +4

      Hey Paul, thanks for the feedback. You are right, this deck was built in the context of MTGO's multiplayer banned list. I don't normally play multiplayer online though, because it's a pretty miserable experience with people going AFK and so on. That said, I think the deck will do pretty well right out of the box in multiplayer, and will get stronger with a few small adjustments. Overall though, the recipe of Hullbreacher/Notion Thief/Narset + Wheel/Twister scales nicely in multiplayer, unless everyone else is also running the same toolset. I don't think I'd make too many adjustments if I played multiplayer. If anything, I might try weaving in the stupid Tainted Pact/Thassa's Oracle kill. But Breacher/Wheel is enough to beat the whole table.
      As for paper "dual" Commander bannings, I have literally never encountered a single play group using that rule set. Maybe that's a consequence of where I live, I know the format is really popular in France.

    • @PaulGaither
      @PaulGaither Před 3 lety

      @@Thebrianweissman - Thank you for the reply.
      1. Yes, multiplayer has its own cEDH section with a different meta.
      2. Duel commander is very popular in many countries outside of the USA. You probably don't remember me, but I met you a long time ago in Davis California where I am originally from, and I live in Peru now. I have been to Panama, Chile, Brazil and other places here duels are very almost the only way people play Commander in person. Even back in Davis and Sacrament in 2008-2011, duel commander tournaments were very popular. I wouldn't know anymore because i don't live there.
      3. My suggestion is simply to make it clear what meta you are building for in your deck techs and maybe have a section at the end of your video for potential adjustments for different rules sets and metas.
      As you are well aware, there is a huge difference between the tempo of a duel and signaling counter magic and EoT tricks... and playing multiplayer where you have 3+ opponents and you have to be far more proactive with free counterspells and free reactive tricks. Fast combo, stax, or "tap out" control are what I see the most of in cEDH.
