Let's be honest - who likes painting? We all like the end result but the process sucks so here is an honest review of a handheld airless sprayer that will change your outlook. I bought this Graco Truecoat 360 DS about 1.5 years back and it has changed my life (ok, not really).
This little handheld sprayer is a fantastic option for anyone looking to improve their finishing game. It is especially great for shop projects or things around the house. If you are in pursuit of shop greatness, or goodness, then you've got to check out this line of sprayers.
In this video I review the reasons why you should look into an airless paint sprayer, the different levels of handheld sprayers offered by Graco, and finally my review of the Truecoat 360 DS model that I own. Spoiler Alert: I recommend you get one!

    WOW- thanks for this review.
I started painting my garage last weekend ( two walls stucco, one dry wall) old style- brush and roller. I got the dry wall done and about 4 feet down the side walls. Took forever painting around water heater, etc.
Saw your video and bought this at HD. I went with the VSP as you suggested and glad I did. It was such a pleasure to use- finished off the walls and interior of the garage door in about 2 1/2 hours. I will never paint with a roller again. This thing is a workhorse, easy to use. Clean up takes a while but well worth it. On top of that it makes this really cool sound which reminds you of the toy machine guns we played with as kids! Great tool, worth every penny.
    THANK YOU!!!!!!!

To anyone reading, trust me and opt for the graco magnum project plus. It’s like $50 more but comes with real tips you can actually change, and you don’t get the weird pulsating from the trucoat 360. This sprayer leaves terrible tiger stripes due to the pulsating, even with a correct overlap. The 4 inch tip on low still sprays too much and causes drip. If you look behind him when the light hits the cabinets, you can still see the tiger stripes. Additionally, because only two tips are compatible, you can only spray paint. Forget about spraying poly or any type of water based coatings. The tips do not allow for precise spraying. It’s decent for small jobs or fences I must admit. If you’re looking for a pro look, you won’t get it with this.

    • @kingsteegg
      @kingsteegg Před 3 lety

I have experienced all those things with this sprayer. I tend to keep a mini foam roller in my back pocket for drips. I found the pulsing happens only when there's about 30% of paint left. I have my next pour loaded with a a second lid and cage I bought separate. I would have also spent the extra money, I'd I had known, but this is the one I have now.

@@jorgeivancepedarey6314 I’m sure you could but it won’t turn out great. You need a fine tip to spray poly and this particular sprayer doesn’t allow you to use the normal Graco tips. Rather, you’re stuck with what you have in the box

I’ve been using the Graco VSP 360 for a slew of projects. Once being my basement remodel and did ALL the trim, talking several hundred feet and all the wainscoting walls. Finish came out like “Buda”. Easy to use and clean. I’m ultra picky on my finishes and this sprayer is awesome. And it finishes in one coat with a good quality paint. Don’t buy cheap paint, especially if you are spraying. I like Sherwin Williams higher end for spraying (and brushing). Proper prep is key to painting, take your time with it.

Hope you are still around to receive the praise you deserve for putting this together. I have always been intimidated at the thought of using a sprayer, but after a couple of videos have built up enough courage. I have found a gently used one of these, so I will put it to the test soon. I am a 'Hobby Handyman' and have turned down most painting jobs that would be ideal for the scale that you recommend with the help of this sprayer. I really only need one job for this to pay for itself. Thanks for your help!

I got the Graco Truecoat 360 VSP and I painted my bedroom walls with it last night (a matte ultra-pure white). After painting the entire room I ended up going through 2 1/2 gallons of paint and noticed how HEAVY the sprayer gets after using it to paint an entire room. Right from the start, I could see the spray pattern sort of ribboning (good coat in the middle but the edges were very light). I used the method of spraying and on the next pass covering about 50% of my last pass to try and ensure the proper coverage. This morning I can see a few areas that I need to go over again really quick. I had previously bought the Graco X5 and took it back (unused) to get something smaller since I do not paint very often, and then regretted that decision. While painting an entire room this paint sprayer goes through the paint! I had the pressure at 1500 psi (setting of 10 spraying a one-coat paint) and I had to refill the canister really often. So much that I was saying to myself I really do not like this sprayer. It got messy, paint got all over the gun, floor, etc. It also did heat up, however, did not stop spraying. If you are looking to paint smaller projects then this sprayer would be fine, however, if you are looking to paint large areas like a room I would opt for the Graco X5 as you can use it with 1 or 5-gallon canisters if need be and the only weight you need to hold is the spray gun, hose, and whatever tip or extension you are using. It would have been great to not need to constantly refill the canister. All that being said this was my first time ever using a paint sprayer and I am sure there are ways I could have extended the amount of paint I was using with a different setting, making sure my distance to the walls was equal as possible, technique, etc. I will be taking my sprayer back to Home Depot and if I need to get another sprayer I will most definitely get the X5. I hope this helps someone out there with their decision and of course this was just my personal experience with the product. I am not saying the sprayer is bad and honestly, for the money ($265), it is not priced all that bad. The X5 was $329 and IMO is worth the extra money.

I bought a wagner power painter about 20 years ago. Used it once and it ATE the paint and had little adjustment. I cleaned it up and put it away....still have it and it looks new. :) Recently the painters painted my house and they were using a Graco sprayer as well. Theirs was a larger one that accepts 5 gal buckets. The spray job was beautiful and learned how they sprayed two coats of Kilz over the wood and sanded between each one and the result is fantastic. This also convinced me to get a graco.

The good thing about that sprayer as I can see is if it starts to clog just turn the tip round and spray it out. Then turn it back the right way and your good to go. As for clean up time it's got to be quicker than cleaning rollers and brushes.
I try to keep my brushes and rollers.
As they wear in nicely over time. But the cleaning process could take 30mins or more depending on what paint I've used.
The tip is to always take care of your tools no matter what they are and you'll have no problems. 👍

Some people can actually find great value in a Wagner Control Pro 130 if they want the feel of a professional style spray gun and it holds about 1.5 gallons of paint. So no dealing with bladders and around the same price point. I think that's eventually the one I'm going to buy just for hobby work.

I used the Graco VSP to paint a double wide garage door with semi-gloss water based paint. Each coat of paint took about 2 minutes - very fast. There is a 4" wide spray nozzle and a 12" wide spray nozzle. I gave the door 3 coats. The only problem I saw was the gloss varied a bit across the door as the light reflected off at an angle. The sprayer pulses out the paint so the flow is not continuous. I think you have to be careful to get enough overlap between the pulses of paint.

The best explanation of the difference among the Graco handheld paint sprayers I've found. I want to use it to apply fine finishes on woodworking projects so I sprung for the Ultramax. Still waiting on delivery.

My $2900 Graco Airless 695 sprayer even gets a clog in the tip once in a while. your almost always going to have that. Good review I would recommend an airless paint sprayer to anyone.

Graco has made some good improvements to their handheld sprayers. However, you need to ask how many gallons will go through the pump before it needs to be rebuilt, which will be at your cost. Also, they may not work after 100 or more gallons.
If you buy paint/finishes at a dedicated paint store and want a better price for one of these sprayers, ask if they will cut the price down. Big box stores or Amazon will not negotiate with you. The paint store managers and sales people may cut the price down close to their cost just to keep your business. Either way, it's worth asking.
My knowledge comes from working for Sherwin Williams eight years as a sales associate. Personally, if you have the money to afford one I would recommend a Graco HVLP sprayer.

Good review. The clogs are coming from large clumps of dried paint that get stuck in the tip. For clogs use a paint strainer bag and strain your paint as you pour it into the paint bag . They are usually less than $3 from your paint store or hardware store. I use these bags on my airless pump.

I have a VSP. Bought it because I was staining trellises and I did the first one with a brush. Took me 2 hours to stain one side of one trellis. After getting the VSP, I finished all 6 in 4 hours, including clean up and breaks. One thing to mention... If you're doing a project where there's going to be a lot of overspray, like a trellis, you use a lot more paint/stain than doing it with a brush. It was worth the trade off for the time I saved. Also, get the Graco storage fluid. It's very easy to use and keeps the pump lubed and clean.

This is the best cheap paint sprayer I have ever used. I watched the video of how to operate and clean several times. The cleanup if done properly and thoroughly makes all the difference in repeated use. If done improperly (as with any paint sprayer) you will have continuous problems. Reminder the spray tips are only rated for so many hours of usage, refer to your operation manual.
