Inside Spain's far-right battle ground: 'When Franco was alive, it was safer'

  • Vox became the first far-right party to win more than a single seat in Spain's parliament since the Franco era when it won 24 in the general election. Last week, it fought its first mayoral campaign in El Ejido, a town in Andalucía with a population of 90,000 people, 30% of whom are migrants. Many of them work in the 150 square miles of greenhouses that surround the town. We follow the campaign and talk to Spaniards and migrants to find out why this socialist stronghold of 40 years is turning to the right.

It is the same debate everywhere. The real question you have to be asking your self is why do migrants come over. They aren’t surviving on thin air. They are being employed either illegally in the black market economy or being employed legally in very low paying back breaking jobs. Either or it is mostly locals who are providing that employment. Someone is benefitting massively from this human trade. It is Spain itself that is providing the supply of jobs otherwise they wouldn’t come.

I agree that imigration needs to be controled but I dont think its the reason why there are so many job-less people. If you want to solve the unemployment crisis in Spain we have to make our country more business friendly, lower taxes and the minimum wage and investors will come to Spain just like moths flock towards light, as long as there´s a stable uncorrupt government people will invest.
