‘Make Spain great again’: does Melilla really need a Trump-style wall? | Divided Cities

  • Everyone in Melilla has some connection to the city’s most visible and controversial feature: a huge barbed-wire fence, which separates this Spanish port city from the rest of north Africa.
Subscribe to The Guardian on CZcams ► bit.ly/subscribegdn
Asylum seekers like Aboubacar wait for months in hidden forest camps to scale the fence, populist politicians like Jesús want to strengthen it, and both the Moroccan and Melillan economy depend on the 30,000 Moroccans like Youssra who cross through it every day to work. Will Melilla embrace its fate as a city embedded in Africa - or will it succumb to populist Trump-style demands to build a wall?

As a spanish and proinmigration person I recognize one special problem in Spain: unemployment. Its really hard to justify massive inmigrants coming and working illegally (the mayority of the times its not their fault, I know) while there are more than 3 million people unemployed in Spain. This is one of the top arguments of Vox. In my opinion if we lower that number nobody will be Against inmigration.

@White Brad Bad Your statement expresses perfectly the low levels of your IQ. What evidence do you have to back up your claim or wait let me guess, anecdotal evidence? If your statement was true in your little dichotomous world, then explain why the Chinese have immigrated to every country on earth yet have a higher average nodal IQ than whites, also keep in mind there are hundreds of millions of Chinese that have never left China let alone immigrate to another country. Why? Financial disparity just like every country on earth have different levels of financial disparity. The greater levels of financial disparity the greater levels of difference in socio-economic power. Your poor attempt at compartmentalising a complex issue shows the surface level of prejudice you carry and I must say it's appalling to the extend that people like you should be reprimanded and neutered so no more inbred children are born.

I live in a German village and we have about 200 black African migrants living in containers along our street in what used to be the children's playground. We all welcomed the migrants when they came at first in 2015 and as a language trainer I went there to offer my services for free. Nobody there was interested in learning German and most spoke English. Many had arrived through the Spanish enclaves with the aim of getting to Germany. Non came from a war zone and many believed that once they had crossed the fence into the Spanish enclaves that they were in mainland Europe. Their geography is appalling and their journey all the way from their home-country is controlled by people traffikers. All have left family behind, wives, children parents, and our camp in the village is 100% young men - just sitting around, doing nothing. 2022 is their 7th year here!

In Somalia, 98% of women have suffered female genital mutilation. No little girl grabs a rusty kitchen knife cutting off her vulva and clitoris. That is done because of and for these men you see in this video. We also know that these men statistically do not flee war, they are not only economic migrants but they are the ones who are the best off. They are the strongest ones. While the weakest ones and the ones who actually can ask for asylum (see: female genital mutilation) are not there. So yes, these men actually are oppressors of women in their misogynist societies.
