Crosstalk Solutions Review
âą UniFi Access IS HERE!
Great video. Super informative, in the middle of a selection process of a similar system for 27 retail locations. The cameras and network features are great
The first thing I thought when I saw this product was, "that looks cool! Too bad they're going to abandon it in two years..."
I'll just wait for the replacement which works with Protect.
Agreed
Same here
Same what they did with mFi and UniFi Video.
yep, i have a Unifi Switch and Cloudkey and dont want to have to also have the Dream machine :) will wait till it works with Protect.
It now works on a Cloud Key Gen2 Plus but under the Access platform, not the Protect platform
Also, I'm a big fan of the UDM-pro. Just to give a little bit of background. I am by no means an IT person nor have any experience dealing with setting up networks. A family member of mine was starting a small business where they needed a phones and cameras in every room. Also because there was not a lot of start up money that mean doing a lot of it ourselves. The UDM-pro is perfect for our use case. We have 13 cameras and 5 UAP-lite connected to it. We also set up freepbx with 12 used cisco 79xx phones. We found refeb two cisco 3750 v2 24ports PoE switches to power everything. This is only 100/100 internet service coming to the building and the main focus was getting everything installed and working correctly than speed.
Unifi is great, but I wish they would chill out on the branching out and focus on what they already have.
Agreed
Totally agree
Agree.
Every company that wants to avoid irrelevancy always has to keep pushing to try new things. They have to keep improving what they have but doesn't mean to stop trying new things
Super agree
Looking at setting something like this up in our HOA. Thanks for the video!
Thanks! Will be getting a kit in a day or two delivered to play with with a UDM-SE
All that's missing is a 10 year support commitment from UBNT...and a good outdoor reader. Would also be nice to see a retrofit version of the product that used standard 6 wire cable vs cat cable.
I have the same meter. Great price / feature balance.
I've seen several comments about needing the UDM Pro and I'm hoping the will either add support to the protect NVR or release a stand alone access controller. Obviously a standalone controller is not ideal if you have one or two doors but I could see it being useful if you need to setup 20 plus doors. Currently deploying Kantech for big systems (50+ doors).
My old Job used Unity but it was an older version they had not upgraded in like close to 20 years. It was a dos looking program on top of Windows 3.1 and it was so old they only had one IT guy in a 200mile radius who knew how to fix the server it was connected to (again an old system) so they had a backup server but of course they had their backup system set for every 3 months so when we had a server failure and they had to switch to the backup server we lost 3 months worth of user information and it took my supervisor almost another 3 months to re-enter over 2000 entries back into the system by hand.
Was way too quick to jump to purchase this.. was really excited for this, then understood that I needed a udm pro.. that was a huge dealbreaker for me.. in the process of sending this back..
Great review. Checking to see if they have a keypad.
Good review. I like your honesty on the pro and cons.
Glad you liked it!
October 6th when video posted and now December 18th. Looks like Ubiquiti took your input as the "Access" controller is now available on the Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus (CKG2+) as well as the UDM-PRO. I don't like to just have the square box just sitting on a shelf so I picked up the rack mount accessory. I would say that if you're going to purchase a USG, Cloud Key, Protect cameras, etc. then it seems fair to get the UDM-PRO but some might already have a USG and a different camera system, or not using unifi access. I feel that's where the CKG2+ seems to be a good middle ground. I don't have a CKG2 (non-plus) but I figure that the requirement is there for those models because they support a hard drive for video/call recordings on the +. If not performing the recording I'm curious if the firmware would still install on it. Also, had to go to the Ubiquiti download center to get the firmware version that supported unifi talk which has an installer for talk, and access. Protect, and Unifi are preinstalled.
The hub works with POE+ also, provided you don't exceed 25.5Watts, it will operate cameras and card readers on POE+ but you cannot use the 12V internal supply as well, instead you can use the dry contacts and use the mag lock with an external 12V security supply...this way you don't need to pay thousands for a very expensive POE++ Switch.
The reader lite can also be set to open with a hand wave. As far as NFC, there is an option you can enable if you want the readers to recognize ONLY those NFC cards that are made by UI. Is there something in the NFC that is unique to UI so Access is able to differentiate between UI and 3rd party?
A CZcams add hit just as you disconnected network cable - awesome timing algorithm...you win this round.
It does!!! Lol
Excellent review mate!
I would love to sell this to my clients but the fact I need the UDM is ridiclous, "Oh I'd love to sell you a door entry system but I am going to need to sell you a firewall with that too" , sounds ridiclous.
And in some years or months it's declared eol and you have 6 months to shift to their new solution or get lost. ;-)
@@dolphhandcreme yes, I have no faith in the Security side of Ubiquiti, it looks cool as fuck don't get me wrong and I use the G4 Pro at home but for commericial installations I always go to Hikvision or Axis.
It's so cheap compared to most access systems alone. Just don't install the networking portion and use it for Protect/Access instead. It's still an affordable appliance for that purpose.
@@mountainslopes Are you actually high? As an actual installer thePaxton net2 range (easily one of the biggest market leaders in the UK anyway) is around half the cost and I can guarantee I'll still be able to get spares in 3 years. Also it's tried and tested.
@@mountainslopes There's a saying (at least in german, don't know for other languages): "Buy cheap - buy multiple times!"
And for Ubiquiti, this is true with so many products. Only 2 product branches that are _currently_ not affected: Wifi and Switches.
But others, f.e. their "cool android sip-phones", cameras, ...
"Fail Secure/Fail Safe". Mags are fail safe. Strikes are fail secure. It is Required by building code to release doors if the fire alarm system has been triggered. I typically stay away from mag-locks or any lock type that can block egress. Strikes and an egress door handle are by far the best, and simplest door config choice. I am curious how this handles a bulk amount of doors. I just finished a 300+ door install. This seems awesome for under 20 ish. I love ui, they have good sw and hw. Cant wait to demo it
Wow thanks a lot for this review!
Can't wait for Deviant and Babak to get their hands on these lol
This was a great add to my garage doors.
I currently have an access hub that I want to install on a door. Now that Access Reader Pro's are starting to become available, I am looking for your opinion on getting Access Pro Reader (which has doorbell feature) or spend the money on a G4 Doorbell. I can figure out if the Access Pro Reader intercom feature is working at this time. Thank you and love your content...please keep it coming!
The UDM Pro is so cheap that it's fine to just use as a door access controller, or NVM too. You can just choose not to use the gateway functionality on the UDM.
I think it makes for a cheap simple appliance!
How would that be done?
during beta you could use it with the cloud key+, they might add that back sometime in the future.
Great review. By the way, the product is by Ubiquiti and UniFi is just a product line they have but the company name is Ubiquiti, not âUniFIâ. Cheers!
Yeah, I blend them together a lot.
Very useful information. Thank you very much,.
If I had to guess it needs the hard drive to store those access videos (unless you can turn that off somehow?) and they just decided to put it on their medium-tier offering for this reason because the CloudKey might've been a bit too slow to handle writing both camera feeds and access video recordings at the same time in their default set-up (with the small 5400 laptop hdd).
Now that being said it seems to me that Ubiquiti is stretching themselves a bit too thin with all these updates and product ranges; they're rolling out all these featured and updates separately already on their major devices... I mean the UDM Pro (the last I checked) didn't even get the 6.x Controller firmware yet... And, well, that's basically what has me a bit worried - if they're already this segmented on the rollouts and have this many issues with quality control then they either need to expand their teams or slow down a bit with releasing these products until they're really ready. I wouldn't be surprised if this got onto the NVR as well but having no timeline for when must be annoying if you want to actually deploy these for clients. And with the UDM Pro being sort of a higher end piece of home gear it's pretty weird that they didn't target the NVR as their primary device to release this with.
Hey, great video. Do you know what Protocol the UA-Pro uses? From what I gather, its NFC but I see several variations of that such as NFC 213, 215, 216, etc. Problem is it appears Unifi only has cards, and our customers want key-tags.
Iâm wondering if it is possible to use the system with multiple access reader proâs but a single access hub? The reason for this would be to be able to open a âcommonâ door in an multi apartment zone where someone would like to ring a specific apartment only.
Could you explain, what's the different to the common doorbell G4. Would you prefer as an ambitious home user the doorbell G4 or the access system? Thank you for your recommendation
I would use a pro for the outer office door and one lite for a secure technical room. Do I need 2 control boxes to have them operate an electric lock? Not something which we can wire as we would have to tear down half the building then :)
Unless they updated it the doorbell doesn't work BTW.
And I'm not a fan of the UDM pro.
It needs way more development.
If I could control door access thru the phone system or a control4 setup I would consider it.
And yes I almost got hyped until I started reading.
As for the power loss, as a firefighter that's what you want, because when we cut power to make entry and RIT were probably going to skip locked doors if it's BAD and end up doing recovery later unless we know occupants are present.
I know that's morbid but reality sucks.
And we cut power because it doesn't mix well with water đ
So if this was installed in a fire station, would it be possible for a relay to send a signal to that controller to unlock all doors for a set time, say 15 minutes, every time there's an emergency call?
How do we hook up the good stuff like radar ir motion detection? so i know if a person is where they are not supposed to be.
Needs an outdoor reader. I'd buy one for my workshop but it won't hold up to the weather and sun. Maybe one day.
Hi, I would like to use this system on a sliding gate to a carpark. I would need two of the outdoor rated Unifi Access Reader Pro connected to the hub. Will this actually work. A simple test is to plug the Lite into the Pro socket and vice versa. Is this something you could try out and let me know?
It appears that as of today (11/9/20), they've release beta firmware for the Cloud Key Gen2 to support Unifi Access, thus the road to requiring a UDM-Pro will be removed "soon".
Hub per door seems like it will get pretty expensive. Per building or the ability to have 10 doors per hub or something would have been nicer. And then the readers could all be POE. Dreammachine requirement is irritating too.
It's pretty common place to have a single access controller per door, mainly due to the wiring with the locking mechanism. Most systems then allow you to either run a server, or nominate a single hub as the "controller" of the system that the others then replicate off of
That's pretty typical for these systems. There's only so far you can run the 12v wiring for the locks so there's typically one controller per door.
Can this be used for employee attendance monitoring? I assume it does because they are bundling the reader lite and it can be used for swiping out. However, will it give me monthly reports of employee attendance? It would be amazing if it could also integrate into payroll software.....
Does anyone know if you can set custom allowances on each card? Like say a pool membership for 3 months vs 6 months with expiration dates?
Can you test the VoIP dialling ability and let us know if it works with 3rd party VoIP systems.
Door Access is now available on the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus
Hello, can someone tell me how many doors (hubs) you can have on this UniFi system? We were told to install this system in a 32 door environment (corporate setting) and was wondering if the UDM and the OS can handle 32 doors and/or above. Thank you in advance.
how about selecting specific doors and time frames to allow entry
Could it activate a LiftMaster gate ? If so, how could it be set up ? Thanks
Well if this didn't require an individual hub per door I would be interested in. One of my facilities has 28 secured doors, and there is 0 chance I could find a blank wall and custom cabling for 28 of these things. It would be a spaghetti nest.
Really nice video, It's possible use with this Unifi devices the Yubico USB Keys with NFC?
Yes, will work with any NFC including yubico that I have been using.
My new favorite way to pronounce Lucina
I have deployed Cloud Key Gen2+ in a few places. I don't understand why it can't be updated to include Access also. Seems odd.
only question: if you were to run 12V to the 'Line' input(with option of a battery backed PSU), would you need the POE++ switch? (thinking real world application/conversion of existing access control systems that need doors to continue operation through a switch power cycle!)
You do not need PoE++ if you are using the dry contacts and not using the hub to power the locking mechanisms.
Can the access reader pro camera be used as a regular camera?
What about the network security? Because these devices are located outside a building. Can it deal with VLAN and Switching that I wonât have access to my normal network should I plug in a PC on this devices?
Does it work with NFC enabled phones without having to run an app first? Or with BLE phones?
Great video. Was wondering
Is there a way to wire the door strike so that if there is a power failure it stays locked automatically and not unlocked. If someone cuts power to the office purposely I donât want all the doors to Suddenly be all unlocked.
The door strike isn't made by ubiquiti; when you buy one for your system, get one that's "fail-locked" (as opposed to "fail-safe"). Some door strikes can be installed either way.
As an access control installer.... I'll pass on this especially coming from a company that's barely putting any money into their development teams for existing products. Their unifi line of hardware is barely cutting it for any decent install jobs outside of the small business scenario. Their Edge series is better but still in the same boat. Their Wireless p2p/p2mp equipment is decent. I have a feeling this will go the way of the UAP-EDU, Unifi phones, lights, and solar stuff. It feels like "oh hey the boss needs this at his house lets develop it so it works for his situation but junk it after we recouped the money to make it for him".
If you're in serious need of a access control setup check out the Prodatakey equipment. I've had other brands of access control gear installed for 10+ years w/o any issues outside of battery maintenance or vandal repair.
Completely agree
This looks like a nice product but being tied to the UDM Pro right now is a problem and UBNT's past history of abandoning products would be a concern too.
How do you add a second door w pro reader?
With Ubiquitiâs track record of abandoning any and all of their fringe products, I would advise any MSP / VAR from integrating this product. Youâll be in a world of hurt in a few years when itâs inevitably discontinued.
Absolutely! After the video-mess i'll never use any of their stuff in mission critical areas. Who knows what's next.
They disqualified as a professional solution provider.
If you want cheap, go for mikrotik-stuff. Otherwise buy more expensive stuff with a guaranteed EOL-date.
Still trying to figure out what i'll tell my customers to which i sold the video-stuff... :-(
Dolph Handcreme UniFi Protect?
@@conradgeiger yes. I'm so angry about this. It was an unique selling point with the portal. My last install at a customersite is only months ago. Instead of letting this continue and just keeping internal protocols compatible, they cancel it. Who knows what will happen to other product branches of their lineup when they are in bad mood?
@@dolphhandcreme Check out Axis.
@@thezfunk i know them, but they are way more expensive and don't offer things like the unifi cloud video for ease of usability. My customers need fool proof stuff because not all of them have technical background.
does anybody know if you could use a Yubikey 5c NFC as an "entry card" for Unifi Access system? Thanks in advance
what about holiday schedules is there such setting to configure that?
Are the Unifi cards use challenge-response or are they just basic standard NFC tags? If its later, then its like an Amibo, trivial to clone to a $0.10 tag using any smart phone.
Hey, from Romania ;) , if i have phone with NFC , it will work to register and use for lock and unlock dors ? and if we have multiple dors , can give acces just to some dores and other dors the user it will not have acces ?
Any chance to test it with a Yubico 5 NFC? Thanks
How did you add the profile picture to show up on the UA-PRO when tapping the Octopus? I didn't see a place to change profile pictures. Is having an linked UI account the only way to have a profile pic?
Interested in that too!
Will it work with a Cell Phone NFC? KISI systems works with a cell - No cards. Cards can be lost or given other people. Most if not all by now password or bio-lock their phones.
I wonder if Apple AirTags' NFC would be able to trigger this door system?
Do you have a KeySy? If so, please try it on the UniFi badges.
Is there a good open source door access system?
Is there a small business use case for this? Time-in/Time-out, shifts, etc.?
wonder if it could control an entrance gate instead of unlock a door
Can you use this as a doorbell, can someone ring it?
how many accesses can be connected?
Hello Tom, would you recommend installing / deploying Unifi Door Access system in 2022? I'm about to deploy it, and would ask your opinion on it as of 2022 :-)
Not really sure, some people do seem to like them we are not using it in production right now.
Is there any way to make it work with iPhone NFC?
They require UDM but the companies that would consider this access control I am guessing would require more features (and a better product) as a firewall than the UDM. If it needs a HDD why not also put it as a SDN on the Cloud Key Gen 2 plus. Does not make any sense to me. I'm just expecting the day when they will not support install of the Unifi Controller on your own VM/Hardware.
What was door hardware you used
I wonder what happens if you plug in the card reader into the switch and not the door access system?
it boots, get's an IP address but does not work.
So can you unlock a door from the gui? Click on the door or controller and say grant access? over ride to open?
I'm looking at mine right now and, at least at this point, it doesn't appear that you can open a door from the GUI
would you be interested in a home install project in Georgia?
Is unifi access suitable for exterior entries? You really didn't cover how weather proof these were.
They have added it to support cloud Key 2 plus FYI
Caution:- If the system crashes you will be locked out so you will need a key switch to unlock. For high security use a remote garage door relay opener, instead of a key-switch as key switches are easy to force and or pick, plus the Ubiquiti key-switch is not recommended as its not secure, note mounting it at the entrance allows a thief to smash it off the wall to bypass it and connect the wires to unlock the door, not secure!
Great video. Two questions...
1) can the hub be installed in the it closet and just run a cet6 and 18/2 to the door?
2) can this be used in a door buz entry system? I.e receptionist sits at desk and uses app or web to see and unlock door?
Closet should work, but I did not see a way to unlock with the web interface.
I'd like to see you build and review a couple of open source, multi-factor, servers. Do you have the bandwidth? Thanks
Suggestions go here forums.lawrencesystems.com/c/site-feedback/
WARNING the input hub connections and 12V power outputs are not isolated from the Poe supply!! , the -ve terminals are at -54VDC with respect to mains earth, so any device you connect to the hub terminals must be electrically floating. Use the dry contacts if using an external power supply. If triggering the inputs from another system like the remote release use a dry contact of a relay to trigger the hub.
Ahhhh yes, the Fuckofftapus Test, my favorite!
Well it looked cool. Then you said it needs the udm pro. That killed it for me.
Im fine with ubnt branching out a bit, but it seems like the more they do, the more they somehow manage to lock their products down.
I wonder if the Card Reader units have any IP rating for weather?
Ip54
@@laurentfache3882 That's kind of lame tbh
does it work with NFC on cell phones?
How i can activate the Voiceoutput?
I was looking into purchasing the doorbell camera but changed my mind after learning it was WiFi only. Could I use this as an alternative?
different product for a different purpose.
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS Thanks. Anything you can recommend?
Does the Apple Watch work as a key
Can i use the Xiaomi Smart Door Windows Sensor pair with unifi access ?
I don't know if they support third party sensors.
Great info, love the octopus. Where can I get one?
We 3d print them
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS Love the channel and the content.
It is my favourite thing to watch in the Morning with my coffee.
I am picking up new and exciting items; I especially like the Linux programs that you use. I use both.
I asked about the octopus as it caught my eye.
Do you sell these in your swag store, just curious?
Thanks again and have a great day.
Take care,

Would nice if Ubiquiti makes an Unifi home version.
why though? if you really want an access control system, this is going to be the most versatile and the most plug and play... if you have a garage door. otherwise there isn't a product on the market to retrofit your current door to use an access control system that this would work in. scratch that there is one product on the market that i think will retrofit but...
How do you do your Octopus testing? I would like to contribute but struggle to find information online!
Octopus testing is hard work.
can the access reader be connected to a switch instead to the access hub? that's something no one is talking about. or just have multiple readers
no
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS Wow that seems like a terrible idea. Unless you happened to run 3x network cables to each of your doors (Hub/Entry/Exit) you literally would need to install the hub next to the door (I like running redundant cables, but 3 to a door is not something I have ever done). Was hoping that at least the readers would be network aware so you could bring the Hubs back to a central secured area (same VLAN obviously but able to communicate over TCP/IP to the access agent).
Also I wonder if you can operate the Lite Reader from the Pro port? For example in a configuration where you have 2x Lite Readers instead of a Pro/Lite combination. The main benefit to the Pro reader is essentially the camera/intercom functionality, but in a number of cases you simply don't need a doorbell/intercom attached to every single door.
@@guerbie7312 in terms of security, it's similar to Dormakaba 's solution. no straight communication between door controller and access reader. so what protocol is using UBNT to connect the readers? too much unanswered questions, UBNT is not explaining lots of technical stuff.
Can you use a cell phone nfc for door access?
Don't thinks so.
