I see that a filter was added in 2012, and mine is a 2011. So that explains why I didn't have anything in there.
It also may explain why his trick for pulling the plastic piece up did not work at all.
So hopefully my video is helpful for anyone else who's confused after watching a video that says it's for 3rd gen, but they changed things in 2012 regarding the battery fan filter, anyway

The internal filter started being sold in 2012 but they didn't come standard until late 2013 so only 2014 & 2015 will have them for sure. Then Toyota came out with an external filter that simply snaps on which also can be used on any 2010-2015 Prius.

A couple of Toyota Japanese technicians told me if you want the best car they make always by the last year of any make and model.
That being said...I bought a 2015 Toyota Prius it came with the filter and so far 345,000 miles and counting.

that exterior part just snaps off... and there is definitely a filter missing..unless you buy an aftermarket vent cover that has a built in filter

i understand it would filter debris but wouldn't it also be more air restricted?

3rd Gen Prius doesn’t come with a filter afaik. You need a clip remover, which comes with most auto trim tool sets, to get rid of that black piece.

I’m having a hard time taking that section out. Did you have to use a ratchet? I see people take it out without it

As you can see, i tried my best to get it off without it. I watched videos where people said you don’t need to, so I tried everything to do it like they do, with no luck

@@spaprius1894 that other video showed the guy disassembling way more & cleaning out the motor and filter in front of it. I ain't gonna bother with that, this looked clean enough & I'm not trying to mess with the car too much now. Maybe later if I start seeing issues.

Next time try several different sockets from your ratchet tool box and you will find the right one in 5 seconds without even knowing the size, before you freak out
