Toyota Prius (2016-2022): Hybrid Battery Air Filter Replacement.

- In this video, we will show how to replace the Hybrid Battery Air Filter in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 Toyota Prius.
Our recommendation is to visually inspect the hybrid battery air filter at least once per year. If you see significant dirt accumulation, the filter needs to be either vacuumed or completely replaced. This will prolong the life span of the hybrid battery.

Thanks so much for this video. My Toyota dealership wanted to charge me $300 to replace it. I watched your video, went to the parts department and bought it for $20!
Same thing here. Just setup my 50,000 mile oil change and they told me about this service and it was going to be over $300. Thanks for adding to the CZcams Master Mechanic data base!
@@HailNjord do it every 15k miles to be safe. It’ll keep your battery in marvelous shape with proper cooling!
@@bobespnza-la7030 so I did the service myself. They've changed the design on a 2021 Prius Prime. You have to man handle the cover to get them off. The filters weren't dirty at all even at 50,000 miles. I guess it just depends on how dirty your car gets and if there are passengers in the backseats often.
@@HailNjordI also have a 2021 Prime Prius XLE. Do you know the model number of the filter for the hybrid battery you use.
@@danlivni2097 no, but it's very simple to pull the filter out. Pull the seal out and you need to man handle the vents off. Just blow the filters off unless it's really bad that you'd need to replace them. When I went back to have my oil changed I asked how involved was the service to have the filter replaced. Since I had already done it my self I want to hear what the dealership said. They told me it took several hours to get to the filters. I said watch this... I opened the back door, pulled the seal away and removed the vent. I told them they are full of shit and I've already done it myself and it takes 5 minutes. They said they were just the messenger. I learned from this the service department makes money selling services you don't need.
Simple and direct video, thank you. Made a basic error though...
Never remove and then take off/re-fit a dirty air filter, in the space where the filter is used! After you pull that filter panel, IMMEDIATELY take it outside before disturbing the filter media! This is so you don't drop any trapped dust and crap into the air and space where it filtered from - otherwise it will just get sucked back into the new clean filter you are about to install. You can see the dust from the dirty filter left on the floor mat in the video here!
Same rule (yes, rule) goes for vacuum cleaners, any automotive air filter, furnace filters, you name it. Take it outside first, then pull the filter media, clean the holder, and replace the filter media, then take back in and install. Easy-peasy. Those with allergies will also thank you! 🙂
Thanks for the step by step instructions, it sure helped me to feel more confident that I could do it myself. The flat head screwdriver tip for prying the cover off was especially helpful. And to think that Toyota wanted to charge me $150 to replace the filter when they told me it was dirty during my last service. $15 for two filters and 5 minutes of time.
Thank you so much --I came here because I got the screw out but felt I was about to break the cover trying to get the rest of it off
Thank you for a great video! Brief, and to the point!!! 👋👋👋
Awesome video, helped me out. thanks!
Thank you for a great video!
Thank you very much for your video. I have a 2016 Prius and didn’t even know it had such a filter. I’m going down to check mine now. My dog always rides in the backseat so it’s probably full of dog hair. Thank you again! Just checked the filter and surprise..it was full of dog hair.
Thank you for your comment! Yes, you do need to check it regularly and clean it.
Thank you so much. You saved me a lot of money.
Best regards.
❤
excellent video..please do more on 2016-2022 Prius and Venza hybrid too
Simple video.Thanks
2016 Toyota Fielder Hybrid. When I check behind the grill under the back seat there is a fan with large wire mesh on the intake but nothing that looks like an air filter. Housing on fan is round about 100mm. Any idea if the filter is completely missing?
I have a 2017 Prius C. It does not have a replaceable battery filter. There is an opening on the lower drivers side of the back seat. How do I make sure the battery is clear? Tony
Nice !!! :D Thanks for doing this
Thank you 🎉
Thank you ❤
Dirty clogged filters are the primary reason for premature battery failure in hybrid vehicles. Battery live is severely shortened when they run hot and can't get cooling air. Are any Prius owners watching this? Filters are cheap and do-it-yourself. Anyone can do it. Just don't blame Toyota for your problem.
Does k and n have this filter for Prius 2020 awd
Muchas gracias por compartir 😇 !
Can you please post video for prius prime 2018 as it is different from 2017 ? thanks
Is the vent in the middle of the back seat supposed to be blowing out hot air ?
I use a drier sheet to cover the air duct it works so much better then cover filter at keeping fine dog hair or all hair from getting into the fan and duct but mines a 2010 it seems like this filter is like a sponge on this later year unlike mine is a screen
Good information, thank you
Is this the same on the same generation Prius prime?
Please show how can I open lid for 2019 Toyota Prius prime, there is NO screws on lid. Thx.
Hi, Thank you soo much for the video, Do you know where can i buy this cover you removed first. I bought the car but this was missing in it. 😟
Thank you! The part number for the cover is 58441-47010. You can find them on eBay - www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=5844147010&_sacat=0&_odkw=58441-47010&_osacat=0&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&siteid=0&campid=5338971185&customid=&toolid=10001&mkevt=1.
@@MorozovAutomotive Thank you soo much.
My cover doesn't have Phillips head screw. One of those stupid push pins instead. Super annoying to get off
Hi I think they screw on my car is stripped. It keeps turning but doesn't pop out. Can you advise if I can just pry it open by force? The female area seems a simple hole for the insert over the screw. Thank you.
I would use a flat head screwdriver pry up the screw head and at the same time use another screwdriver loosen the screw, hope this help😊
@@user-tp7of2bi4s Thank you for the advise. I think I tried to do that but it was just really difficult to get leverage in such a tight space. Our local dealer charged $60 for the filter replacement so I'll let them do it and fix the stripped area.
@@longochu8588 : you’re very welcome.
How do I get the cooling battery maintenance light to reset?
it's on youtube. find it like you did this video.
Awesome video. I just purchased a 2017 Prius Two. From what I understand the dealership is the only one that serviced this vehicle. Apparently, a power tool was used to reattach the screw, now it just spins in place when I try to remove it. The threading inside is apparently stripped. How do I get this thing out now?
Thank you! Try not to press hard when you unscrew it. If it still does not come out. I would try to pry it out with a flat screwdriver.
Now make a video for the Toyota Mirai!!
How often should we change battery filters
I would check and clean it once per year. If there are signs of damage on the filter, it needs to be replaced.
I wish I had seen this video before I paid Toyota so much money to do this
Dear viewers, I have a question about cleaning the HV battery fan on a European Prius Plus Wagon (2012). The Prius Plus Wagon is sold in the US under the name Prius V. But..., there is one big difference when it comes to the spot where the HV battery is located in the car. In the European Prius Plus this HV battery is placed between the front seats. On the US model Prius V Wagon the battery is placed under the back seat row. From the outside the Prius V and the Prius Plus (Europe) look the same. Both are wagons.
However, the European model has THREE seat rows. The European model is a SEVEN seater. The location of the HV battery is therefore very different. Like I said, it's between the two front seats.
Would anyone know where to find information on the cleaning procedure for the European model Prius Plus Wagon? I could not find anything on CZcams. The air intake for the battery fan seems to be under the richt front seat for the Prius Plus. Are there Toyota service manuals for car technicians who cover this cleaning procedure?
Thank you all in advance for your help.
Is this the same on the Rav4 Hybrids?

@@MorozovAutomotiveQuestion. I got about 46,000 miles on my 2021 Toyota Prius.
I went into Toyota for an oil change and they recommend that I get one of these transmission fluid flushes
That's where they take out the fluid of the transmission and put in new transmission fluid.
I've heard from a few people over the years that said, it's good thing to do and others who said, to not do that. What do you recommend.
Can you just wash it?
where can you buy new filter is it sold on amazon ?
Not sure about an Amazon but they do have them on ebay - www.ebay.com/itm/183874171721. You can use this part number to look it up - G92DH-47070.
Can I purchase the Prius filter thru Amazon?
Yes, you can. Use this part number to look it up - G92DH-47070.
When should the filter be replaced? What mileage?
I also would like to know the answer to this question.
@@zombie2517 I just asked an engineer about this. He said 20,000 miles. Now, if you live in a highly dusty area, maybe 15,000 miles.
@@johncipolletti5611interesting - im looking at the maintenance schedule & the only mention of "Clean HV battery cooling intake filter" is under "Special Operating Conditions: Extensive Idling and/or low speed driving for a long distance"
this would imply if you don't meet this condition, it would never be inspected and cleaned for the life of the car?
I've got 37k on my car & def going to check the filter in the morning to see how it's doing!
@udance4ever I am sorry but is this about the Toyota? I lived this car but I am old and really wanted a full EV. So, the other day, Chevy wanted to give me a fortune for my 2 year old car! I traded it in for the new Chevy Bolt!!!
I cant get mine open with a screw driver for whatever reason.
There’s a retaining clip on that screw
the prius 2017 does not have a screw, also there is no filter for that intake.
My 2017 has both
