- Float Fishing Rivers - Keep it Simple. I decided that I wanted a change, so I took a float rod out to the river to see if I could catch fish on an Avon style float. I was hoping to catch mullet by feeding little and often, but unfortunately the recent floods seem to have cleared them out of the river at the moment.
I was lucky that the carp were in a more obliging mood, but I did have to change my feeding style from 'Little and Often' to a more groundbait based strategy.
I really did have fun catching on a float and it's something I must do more often.

Hi Den, nice to see you are ok anc self isolating, I'm doing the same thing, isolating at my local lake's in Weeley Essex. Take it easy mate.
Thanks Hilary. You too mate. Tight Lines.
Nice unhooking mat
As always a most excellent video. Here in the states we are starting spring. You have inspired me to start float fishing for carp. Don't know why, but have always been a bottom fisherman for carp. Its time to move to something new.
Thanks for your comments Bill. I hope you catch plenty.
A couple of good fighters there. Glad to see you posted today. Was starting to get worried that you were in quarantine. 😉
Hi John. My Quarantine is on the riverbank. Lol.
Great vid nice days fishing too. They do not all need to be monsters just fish!
Exactly mate. It would have been nice to see how a 20lb fish fitted in my new extended landing net though. :)
This time do you put tell tale fishing in the river
Please make a video how to hook sweet corn in the river
Was wondering if you were going to do another video or not Den cos of the corona crisis, pleased that you have, i look forward to them, thank you take care.
Thanks Larry. I will continue to make videos until the Government shuts everything down.
@@FishingwithDen good man.
I fish on the river Clyde in Glasgow, very fast flowing deep river.
Will this setup work as my floats gets dragged around ?
There are limits to every technique Martin, but this method will cope with deeper rivers and faster currents better than most others. At some point you may have to change to a heavy feeder, but without seeing the river Clyde, its very difficult to say exactly.
My advice would be to give it a try with a larger/heavier version of the Avon Float. My biggest takes 9AAA shot (Approx 7 grams). Another alternative, if you have a pole, is to use a Flat Float. I use these up to 15 grams on the same river when fishing out in the main flow. I have a video on this. Here’s the link if you want to watch it: czcams.com/video/jvMPpUZ9V8g/video.html If this seems to be what you want, there is another video on how to set the rig up: czcams.com/video/Q41U3XZZBtU/video.html
Thank you
Is there a way of float fishing a river that has a fairly good current ? My line always comes back into the bank
If you are trying to fish further out, you will need to either let the float run through unhindered, or hold back gently from time to time as it passes through the swim. Holding back hard will pull the float into the bank.
@@FishingwithDen thanks unfortunately I still don't understand
I have never fished on rivers before only sea fishing, I got a 2 rod course license and going for the first time tomorrow, any other tips?
It is always a good idea to go with someone who knows what they are doing. That way, if you do get something wrong, they can always put you back on the right track.
@@FishingwithDen thanks for the tips, I do have a few friends that fresh water fish so I think a trip is going to be due soon!
Can't wait to catch, thanks
Is this in Australia??
Yes mate. NSW, in the Hunter Valley
Any crocs there?
No mate. The nearest Crocs are hundreds of miles away. But there are Bull Sharks!
@@FishingwithDen thanks mate
What reel and line do you use mate..
Enjoy your videos
Thanks Damien. I've tried a few reels lately mate. At the moment, due to the Arthritis in my thumb joint, I have reverted to an old Shimano Exage 3000 reel for basic trotting on the river. The simple reason for this is that it's a bit smaller. Having said that, I've caught plenty of good sized Carp on it.
For my feeder fishing, I'm using an MAP Carptek 4000 FD because I like the Automatic Line Clip (ACS) which automatically releases the line from the clip if a fish runs hard. It did have a few issues with it releasing too easily at first, but a friend of mine showed me how to use the tiniest spot of Blue Tack in the slot and now it works perfectly. Unfortunately, they have just been discontinued I believe.
For longer range feeder fishing, I'm using a Shimano Ultegra 5500 XTD.
As for reel lines, I have been using Maxima Ultragreen in 6lb for Waggler fishing and 8lb for feeder fishing. I am however looking at other lines at the moment, because Maxima is so springy in these diameters, which makes it difficult to fully load a spool without the line springing off. I am testing Shimano Exage for Feeder fishing at the moment, but I'm also looking at the Guru lines which I will be testing shortly. I hope this helps.
